In Appreciation

The FFA would like to thank Pat Nickel (of the Peter French line), Sue Peterson (of the John French, Jr. line), and Karen Engstrom (of the George French line) who pulled together constructive data during their big push ten years ago, but didnÕt get around to documenting it. The significance of this information is that it makes Peter, John, George, Elizabeth and Catharine definitely the children of John and Maria Barbara French (in all its spellings).

The FFA would also like to thank Deb Skoff for her untiring efforts in trying to determine the connection between Henry French who m. Elizabeth Ersom, FFA Chart #31, and John French, FFA Chart #129.

Rebecca Freeborg needs to also be recognized. She has researched her lines all her life, and in 1985 she was in declining health and unable to do more. She writes that she has obtained deeds and land grants proving PeterÕs brothers were Henry and William (the FFA has not seen the deeds and is not been able to prove this theory). However, she may have combined these names with FFA Chart #10 or FFA Chart #192 which are very similar and do have brothers Henry, Peter, and William. That is to say, all these charts may be combined someday, but for now the FFA has not proved it. She also is the one who found JoshuaÕs altercation with the English Count and his escape to Germany from Boston – Joshua being PeterÕs father, and JoshuaÕs father being Samuel, but the FFA has found no validity in this statement. Rebecca says he left Boston ca. 1762-64 and returned to Boston in 1765. The name Joshua could be the same as John. Rebecca writes that she has no heirs and donated all her research to the FFA for publishing. Rebecca has a double middle name, Rebecca Minerva Maloney French, m. Arthur Freeborg. She was b. 28 May 1907, d. 21 Jul 1990 in Knoxville, TN.

I would also like to thank Ray Novak for his years and years of research, and to his lovely wife Margaret who has keeps up with his French line after his death. She says that hardly a day goes by that she doesnÕt think of something she wants to tell Ray, especially about his family tree.

Note: FFA Chart #51 now connects to this chart and the two charts are combined here.

Bibliography

History and Research

John French, Sr., was the father of Peter French. He was b. ca. 1742, d. 25 Dec 1787 in Hagerstown, Washington Co., MD [34, 35]. Washington County was formed 1 Oct 1776 from Frederick County. Allegany County was formed from Washington County in 1789. Hagerstown is the county seat. Hagerstown was founded by Jonathan Hager, a German emigrant from Pennsylvania.

It is possible that John French Sr. had a brother who had son Henry French, b. 1765 in Hagerstown, Washington Co., MD. He would have been a cousin to Peter French of this line. We have designated Chart #192 to Henry French who m. Abigail Anderson. This is DNA Group 11. Both families migrated to TN and OH, but to different areas. Henry French, b. 1755, m. Elizabeth Ersom (a German) migrated to KY, FFA Chart #31. Henry French who m. Catherine Heatrone, migrated to Washington and Greene Counties, TN, FFA Chart #10. This is one reason why a DNA test would be helpful for this line.

Ref. [53] searched the records at Salt Lake City and indicated that there are no records of this French family emigrating from Germany. There is nothing listed in the German fiche concerning a Peter Frantz, Franz, Frensch, Frentsch, or French at that time period. The FFA believes the FFA Chart #129 French family never resided in Germany, but lived in a German community in Pennsylvania where they met the RŸhl family and other German families. Therefore, the French family may have temporarily changed their name phonetically to Frantz on account of living in a German community. There were many families with the surname Frantz in the Lancaster, PA area at that time; however, these families were German and born with the surname Frantz.

Let us suppose that John French, b. ca. 1742, immigrated to Maryland as a young adult, in 1760, without his parents. We need to check Philadelphia and Maryland immigration records for a John French emigrating at that time from England. The Passenger and Immigration Lists Index, 1500-1900, lists ÒaÓ John French immigrating to Pennsylvania in 1773. If this were the correct John, it would mean that his children were not born in Pennsylvania. A possibility would be that John moved to Germany, m. and had his children, and then immigrated to Pennsylvania in 1773. The FFA does not, however, believe this French line ever lived in Germany, but that they lived in a German Community in PA and met their German wives perhaps at the German Reformed Church, the Zion Church.

There are 9 sets of twins in this French line.

Immigration and the Census Records

The only clue that we have that this family lived in Germany is the marriage record of JohnÕs son Peter to Rosanna Rule which states that both were born in Germany. However, it is not the original record, but one typed in later years.

ÒAÓ John French was b. 1705 and immigrated to Pennsylvania in 1728. He was probably the father of the John French of this line. ÒAÓ Francis French (male) and ÒaÓ Joseph French immigrated to Pennsylvania in 1727.

The 1790 census for PA did not show any French or Frantz that seemed logical for this line, so I tried searching for the wildcard Fre* to perhaps find Frensche or a similar different spelling to no success in PA. So I tried Fra* and found Franch, France, Franks, Fratz, but nothing that seemed logical as far as name and location. Moving on to the 1800 PA census, I tried the same search tricks to no avail. By 1793, the family had moved to VA, but I was checking for perhaps their forefathers in PA.

Searching all states in the 1790 census, there are 43 men with the name John French. They are from CT, ME, MD, MA, NH, NY, NC, PA, and VT. The only way I found in picking one of these is by the number of children listed, or by his neighbors. Researchers are requested to help and email me, marafrench@mindspring.com. I had more success with Peter French, JohnÕs son, in all states of the 1790 census since there are only 3. All are in NY; however, in 1790 Peter was either in MD or PA. Rensselaerwick, Albany Co., NY 1790 shows both ÒaÓ Peter French with 1 2 1, and ÒaÓ John French with 1 3 3, and no other Frenches. In 1790 Peter was not yet married. Plattsburg, Clinton Co., NY shows ÒaÓ Peter French with 1 0 2, and a Reuben French living next to him with 1 1 1. Hampton, Washington Co., NY shows a Peter French with 6 3 6. No listing for Peter Frantz in 1790 appears. However, ÒaÓ Peter Frentch shows in Washington, MD along with George RŸhl and Jacob Sheetz all in a row which indicates this is the correct line. Peter shows with 1 1 1, but we donÕt know who these family members are. George RŸhl is with 1 4 2. Jacob Sheetz is with 1 1 3.

The Germans who m. into the French family had the surnames Rule (RŸhl), Smice (Schmeiss), and Sheets (Sheetz). Many Germans emigrated from Hesse, Germany to Pennsylvania between 1748 and 1766. Hesse, or the Palatine (Palatinate or Pfalz region), was the area of highest 18th Century German recruitment and emigration. The waterways Rhine, Mosel, Ruhl, Main, and Neckar Rivers were the primary mode of travel from their villages to Rotterdam, Amsterdam, for emigration to America.

Looking at ancestry.com, many families with the surname French emigrated from Hamburg, Germany to New York or Philadelphia in the 1800s.

DNA Testing

IÕve researched this line just about all I can from ancestry.com and from the internet. Additions need to come from family members or from local books or historians who havenÕt put their information online.

Another source would be for a male with the surname French of this line to take the DNA test. It is a simple test that doesnÕt involve blood. A kit is delivered to your house with special brushes for you to take cheek swabs and the tip is injected into the tiny test tubes to be returned to the lab. After the tests that you ordered are completed, in about 4 weeks, you will be notified and can log in to your personal page at the company to view your results and your DNA matches. They may match up with one of the tests shown here: http://www.familytreedna.com/public/french/default.aspx?section=yresults. The FamilyTree DNA website gives a special lower price to those with the surname French. Read about those who approve of it: http://www.familytreedna.com/testimonials.aspx. To get the discounted price for our French DNA Project group, go to http://small-stuff.com/FRENCH/DNA/ and click at the left on "Join the French DNA Project" then place your order. We suggest the 37 marker test (Y-DNA37), but if you want to start with 25, you can upgrade to a higher test at a later date if needed.

Thank you for your support. I was able to verify that my French line is from Richard French in England, and not from William French in England who raised RichardÕs son from age one – the two have entirely different DNA test results. Regards, Mara French

P.S. Although John French is not of my line, I will continue to do research on him as time permits.

First Generation

For previous generations and the siblings of John French, see FFA Chart #195.
John French, his father, was b. 1705 in England, immigrated 1728 to Pennsylvania.

1.1 John (Johannes, Johann) French (Frensch), Sr., b. ca. 1742 [33] most likely in Chanceford township, York Co., PA, d. 25 Dec 1787 in Hagerstown, Washington Co., MD [34, 35]. He m. Maria Barbara Schmeiss (a German name) in 1760 in Chansford Township, York Co., PA. She d. after 1775 [34, 35]. See discussion on Maria BarbaraÕs surname. Chansford was later spelled Chanceford. See a map of the townships of York County, PA. York Co. was formed on 19 Aug 1749 from Lancaster Co. Chanceford was formed in 1747. John and Maria Barbara moved south through Pennsylvania toward Maryland. After JohnÕs death in 1787, Maria Barbara m. William Albright in 1789 in Washington Co., MD. William and Maria Barbara Albright owned land in Dover, Huntingdon Co., PA in 1793. The deed was for land to be given to John French, Jr.

The appraisal of JohnÕs goods and chattels was written on 4 Mar 1788. The original will uses the name ÒJohn FrenchÓ and not ÒFrantzÓ. The FFA has found no listing of the name Frantz for John. In 1787 their youngest child was not of age, according to JohnÕs will. George Rule was a witness to the will of John French in Dec 1787 in Washington Co., MD [33]. George Rule was the father of John FrenchÕs daughter-in-law, Rosanna Rule. See John FrenchÕs Will. George Rule m. Mary Minker.

á     The Pennsylvania Original Land Records Series for York Co., PA and the township of Chanceford lists Johan Frensch and no other one of this family; therefore, John could have been the emigrant. There is no Maria, Barbara, Albright, French, Frensch, Rule or RŸhl listed.

Death

John French's will, dated 22 Dec 1787, was witnessed and signed by George Rule, the father of Rosanna Rule French. The will mentions wife, Barbara, children Peater (Peter), John, George, Catherine and John Smice (the son of John French's daughter, Elizabeth).  The will was read in 1789 (two years after the will was written) in Washington County, Maryland, and at that time signed by William Albright and Barbara, his wife.  Apparently Barbara French remarried right after John's death. The will speaks of John French, late of s'Cydecef, which could have been an old village name or the name of his house or land (this is an erroneous assumption, it is merely legaleez - see Pat Nichol's notes, ÒJohn French late of WASHGCOTY deceased.Ó).

Second Generation

Children of John and Maria Barbara (Schmeiss) French, 1.1

2.1* John Peter French, Sr., aka Petter, Peater, and Pieter, b. 1762 in (Washington Co.?) PA, baptized 29 Apr 1769 according to the New Lutheran Church in Falkner/Falckner Swamp, PA [6]. There are two churches in Falkner Swamp: the New Hanover Lutheran Church and the Falkner Swamp German Reformed Church UCC. Peter was baptized near Philadelphia [33]. The marriage records of the Reformed Church in Falkner Swamp, Montgomery Co., PA, 1748-1800, do not list this family. Peter was most likely the oldest son because he received the most in his fatherÕs will of 1787. Peter d. 9 Mar 1849 [5] in Knox Co., TN [1].

Peter m1. ca. 1791-93 to Rosanna RŸhl (pronounced and later spelled as Rule). Peter lived near Lancaster, PA, when he met and m. Rosanna RŸhl (pronounced and later spelled as Rule), another German emigrant. The German spelling is Ruehl or used with an umlaut over the ÒuÓ and delete the ÒeÓ). Peter met and m. Rosanna in the vicinity of Lancaster, PA [4]. Rosanna was b. 1773 in Wallau, Hessen, Germany, the dau. of George and Rosanna (Shipley) RŸhl of Hessen, Germany [1]. Mara French research the village of Wallau and will add that information when found in her storage. George and Rosanna RŸhl were buried at Old White Oak Cemetery, Penryn, Warwick Twp., PA. The U.S. and International Marriage Records of 1560-1900 show the marriage of Rosanna RŸhl, born 1773 in Germany, m. 1793 to Peter Frantz French who was born in 1762 in Germany. Does anyone know if the ÒGrÓ indication for Germany is true? I have found no records indicating this. Please email mailto:marafrench@mindspring.com?subject=Chart129. The Pennsylvania Dutch are of German Heritage, not Dutch. Dutch is actually Deutsch, which means Germany.

Peter and Rosanna traveled down the Shenandoah Valley and settled in Botetourt Co., VA on the James River in the vicinity of Springwood, where Spreading Creek joins the James River at the foot of Purgatory Mountain. The name of Peter French first appears in Botetourt County Personal Property Records of Hugh Allen on 24 Apr 1793. The name of George Rule, Sr., his father-in-law, appears in 1801, followed by John (Jack) French in 1803, William French in 1809, and Thomas French in 1812.

Rosanna French d. ca. 1830 in Knox Co., TN [1] and is buried at the New Salem Methodist Church Cemetery in Knoxville, TN. The graves of Peter and Rosanna French are marked only by fieldstones alongside the graves of their son, Jacob and his wife Sarah. Peter m2. Mary RŸhl, a cousin of his first wife Rosanna, who may have first m. a Porter. Peter and Mary had a son, Andrew Rufus French. Mary died after the 1850 Knox Co., TN census.  She is listed on that census with her son, Rufus A., two other children and Peter/Rosanna's daughter, Sarah Jane French. Mary Porter was a neighbor of Peter in one of the census records. In the 1850 census, George Porter, age 16, is living with this family.

New Salem United Methodist Church in Knoxville, TN, taken by Mara French on her research trip in about 1998. Located at 2417 Tipton Station Road, Knoxville, TN 37920

Peter and Rosanna probably belonged to the German Reformed Church, formed in 1770 in Lancaster, PA, where the majority of the RŸhl family were members. In the First Census of the United States in 1790, Washington Co., MD, Jacob Sheetz (PeterÕs brother-in-law), George Rule, and Peter French are listed as living next to one another.

Peter d. 9 Mar 1849 [5] in Knox Co., TX [1]. In his will he states his youngest Òson is to share if able to take care of it" [9]. This son was from PeterÕs second wife and only 5 years of age when his father died. Ref [9] has a copy of Peter French's will dated 23 May 1849. Peter is interred at the cemetery by New Salem Methodist Church, Route 10, 2417 Tipton Station Road, Knoxville, TN, along with seven generations of PeterÕs descendants [4]. Peter and Rosanna lived at "Mary-Marsh" on Little River near the Knox County and Blount County line.

There is reason to believe that Peter and Rosanna were the first unit of the family to displace themselves from the environs of northern Maryland/southern Pennsylvania and move to the banks of the James River in Botetourt County, VA, in the vicinity of Springwood, which was and still is a "Low Dutch" (German) community. The name of Peter French first appears in the Botetourt County Personal Property Records (VA) of Hugh Allen on 24 Apr 1793. The name of George Rule, Sr., his father-in-law, appears in 1801, followed by John (Jack) French in 1803, William French in 1809, and Thomas French in 1812 [4]. George Rule, Sr., died in Botetourt Co, VA, on 12 Apr 1819. His will, Volume C, 393, probated Sept. 1823 mentions his seven children, including Rosanna, wife of Peter French. The name of Peter French last appears in Botetourt County records in Sept. 1815. He had sold out the last of his holdings there, after having purchased lands in Knox County, TN. Court records in Knox County show Peter recorded the deeds for 204 1/2 acres of land on Stock Creek and along the southern limits of the county. (Dec. 20, 1816, W-D-1, pg. 353) [4]. After the probate of George RuleÕs will, in 1824, Peter received a land grant of 137 acres in TN on the south side of the River French Broad. His brother, George French, owned land south of PeterÕs land. Here Peter and his family lived and died and here they raised a stable family. This area became a German-Lutheran community.

  French Broad River

PeterÕs first commitment, after the land purchase, was to the Lord. a log meeting house, 20 x 20 ft, designated as a place to hold religious services. It stood on what is now Martin Mill Pike (a street) at Tipton Station Road. Whether the structure was standing at the time of purchase, or later erected by the Frenches, is unknown; however, Rosanna Rule French immediately gave it the name of "Salem," and the roadway became "Salem Valley Road," now known as "Tipton Station Road" [4]. The New Salem United Methodist Church is located at 2417 Tipton Station Road in Knoxville, TN. Martin Mill Pike was once the main road from Knoxville to Maryville. It was a road which Prince Louis Philippe, later king of France, traveled when he spent Saturday night, Apr 29, 1797, at an inn near the intersection of North Cusick Street and East Broadway Avenue in downtown Maryville. Maryville is a city in Blount Co., TN, only 20 miles south of Knoxville, Knox Co., TN.

Peter requested his son George name his son (PeterÕs grandson) Amos, (born 1831) in memory of his brother "who was a soldier in the Revolutionary War, 1775-1783." [4] The FFA does not believe this statement to be true in that Peter did not have a brother, uncle, or cousin named Amos with any proven source material.

Peter embraced the Wesleyan concepts of the Protestant faith. He worked in Pennsylvania and into Virginia and Tennessee (NC). Peter brought the first of the Rules family to Knox County when he bought his farm. He had been in the area on preaching missions prior to 1812 – one letter states he "shook the hand of Asbury today" [4] [8]. Peter traveled establishing Methodist Societies and members of RosannaÕs family came to be with her when Peter went on a preaching mission to Texas. He also established a church in Roane County, TN, ca. 1811, in the vicinity of now Dayton. It was known as FrenchÕs Methodist Church. (Perhaps not valid. PeterÕs brother, William, located in Roane County. He too was a minister [4].)

Peter is interred at the cemetery by New Salem Methodist Church, Route 10, Knoxville, TN, along with seven generations of PeterÕs descendants [4]. Peter and Rosanna lived at ÒMary-MarshÓ on Little River near the Knox County and Blount County line. The New Salem Valley Methodist Church is on the National Registrar of historic churches.

According to the 1790 Census of Washington County, Maryland, Jacob Sheetz, Peter ÒFrentchÓ and George Rule were neighbors [1]. See the will of George Rule.

Land Grants indicate that Peter French, Henry French, and William French were brothers per Rebecca Freeborg. They are both listed in Botetourt Co. Personal Property Records in 1809. William removed to Roane Co., TN after 1811 where he was a minister. William French is FFA Chart #110. The FFA is not adding William as a sibling until we have more proof. Neither William nor Henry are listed in the will of Peter FrenchÕs father, John. PeterÕs will was dated 25 May 1849 and probated in Knox Co., TN in Sep 1849.

At the Salem Methodist Church Cemetery in Knoxville, a special gravestone was created by Rebecca Freeborg, a descendant, to honor him and his wife Rosanna. She lists his birth date on the gravestone as 1770; however, in her book she lists his birth date as 1762.

2.2 Catherine French [34, 35], b. ca. 1764, listed in her fatherÕs will, m. Jacob Sheetz (or Sheets), had one son and two daughters. She may not have been m. by 1787 because of how she is listed in her fatherÕs will compared with her sister Elizabeth – her father gives to her oldest son, not to his daughter Elizabeth. Catherine was m. by 1790, as Jacob Sheetz appears in the 1790 MD census in Washington Co., living next to George RŸhl and Peter French. Catherine and Jacob Sheetz were also living in Washington Co., MD ca. 1800.  She d. ca. 1803 in Taneytown, MD. Their son Jacob Sheetz was b. 1785, m. Hannah Marple, and he d. Apr 1860 in WV, age 75, as per the U.S. Federal Census Mortality Schedules Index. In the 1790 census, Jacob Sheetz is listed as living in Washington Co., MD, living next door to George RŸhl, who was living next door to Peter Frentch (as it is spelled in the census), all of this line. In 1850 Jacob Sheetz (the son) was living in Shepherdstown, Jefferson Co., VA.

2.3 Maria Elizabeth French, (known as Elizabeth – see naming conventions), b. ca. 1765 in Chansford Township, York Co., PA, d. 1817 in Tell Township, Huntingdon Co., PA [34, 35]. She m. (Johan) John H. Smice (Schmeiss – the German spelling), a Hessian soldier, ca. 1783 in York Co., PA, the year he was released as a prisoner of war for 7 years.  They had 7 children: Maria Barbara, John, George, Rebecca, Elizabeth, William, and Peter [34, 35]. John H. Smice was b. 20 Jan 1752/53 in Schonau/Schoneau, Schonstein, Hessen, Germany [34, 35] [33], the son of Johann Martin Schmeiss. In the 1800 census, John Smice was living in Shirley (Shirleysburgh), Huntingdon Co., PA. He d. between 1813 and 1814 in Huntingdon Co., PA. The German spelling for Smice is Schmeiss. See biographic notes on Johannes Schmeiss.

2.4* John French, Jr., b. 1769 in Delaware, baptized 9 Jan 1772 at the Falckner Swamp Church in PA, d. Jun 1858 in Tell Township, Huntingdon Co., PA [34, 35]. He is listed in Botetourt Co. Personal Property Records in 1803, d. Jun 1858 in Tell Twp., Huntingdon Co., PA [33] [4]. In 1815 and in 1832, John was a principal township officer, a Supervisor of Tell Township, PA. In 1820 and 1835, he was an Overseer of the Poor. John remained in PA.

John m. Ever, according to the 1850 census of Tell Township, Huntingdon Co., PA, in which census they were living next to George French (age 47 and b. in 1803 in PA) and his wife Agness C. (age 47 and b. 1805 in the District of Columbia) and children Hannah (age 22 and b. 1828 in PA) and Lydia (age 19 and b. 1831 in PA). In the 1850 census, John was 81 and b. in 1769, Ever was 77, therefore born in 1773 in PA. Agewise, it would seem as though this George was JohnÕs son. (This line was originally Chart #51, but it now connects to this chart, Chart #129). Also in the 1850 census, John and Ever were living with Barbara French (age 35 and b. 1815 in PA most likely the wife of Thomas), John French (age 12 and b. 1838 in PA most likely the son of Barbara and Thomas), William French (age 5 and born in 1845 in PA most likely the son of Barbara and Thomas), and Thomas French (age 45 and b. 1805).

2.5* George French, Sr., b. 19 Sep 1775 at St. LukeÕs Union Congregation Church in Chansford Township, York Co., PA, d. 24 May 1857 on Irwin or Erwin IcebergÕs Farm in Bear Branch, Pike Township, Ohio Co., IN [33]. Erwin Iceberg, now located in Dillsboro, IN, is a beef cattle feed lot and tobacco farm. George was a Methodist. George was buried in the French Cemetery on Irvin Iceberg Farm near Bear Branch, only 1 stone, probably 5 graves [89].

George is listed in his fatherÕs will. He m1. a native American woman from the Mingo tribe ca. 1796 and had 5 children. See Mingo Indians. She probably died some time between Mar 24, 1805 and May 5, 1809. Another source said he m1. Hannah Sprague in PA. George m2. Sarah McBride on 5 Mar 1809 in Huntingdon, PA and had 2 children [33]. Sarah was b. Dec 1787 in Huntingdon, Huntingdon Co., PA, d. 17 Sep 1863 in Alexandria, Madison Co., IN [33], and buried at the Starr Cemetery in Alexandria, IN [77].

Mingo Creek Presbyterian Church in Pennsylvania. The church was organized in 1786 and occupied a log structure until 1831. The Reverend Samuel Ralston spoke from the pulpit from 1796 to 1836. The "meetinghouse" played a key role in the 1794 Whiskey Rebellion.

Mingo Creek Presbyterian Church. Off PA 88 at junction with Mingo Church Road (PA 1061) in Washington County (1-2 miles south of Finleyville). Photos by compiler with Joyce Chandler. Enlarged marker & church and enlarged meetinghouse stone.

"Mingo Creek Church. This area has been called the cradle of the Whiskey Rebellion. Here in the 1790s, a log meetinghouse stood near the site of the present church. Used by the Mingo Creek Society after its formation in February 1794, it became a nerve center for protest against the whiskey excise tax. Society members were active in militia musters held on these grounds; some are now buried in the churchyard.

"Pennsylvania Historical and Museum Commission."

"Mingo Creek Meeting House. Organized in 1788. This pioneer congregation first worshiped in a 50 ft square log building with rough benches for seats constructed in 1786 on the site of the present manse. The first pastor Doctor Samuel Ralston was born in Northern Ireland of Scotch parents and received his education at the University of Glasgow, Scotland. He was installed as pastor in 1796. The present church was built in 1831. (stone)Dedicated 1958."

From "History of Dearborn, Ohio and Switzerland Counties, IN 1885", Pike Township - Ohio County, [39]. "Other pioneers of the township, who had located here between sixty and seventy years ago, can be recalled George French and family (Pennsylvanians), Samuel Cunningham and family, Peter Bear (a Virginian) and family, John and Elisha Clark (from Ohio here) and families, Norman Sloan and family, Benjamin Locks and family, Jeremiah Folsom and family, Ebenezer Phelps and family, and a Mr. Walson, all of whom lived in and about what is called Freedom; along Laughery Creek, lived Samuel Graham, John Lyons, Isaac Bisby, some of the Purcell's and a man by the name of Spears, all men with families; and on Bear Creek, lived Benjamin Dulph and family. These men were all in the strictest sense pioneers, clearing up and improving farms, and otherwise identified in the township's history." "In the early settlement in the southern part of the township, a class of Methodists was accustomed to worship at the residence of George French, who was a class-leader. This denomination, we believe, has never erected a meeting-house of their own in the township."

From Pike Township, Ohio Co., IN: Freedom, or Cole's Corners. "This consists of a little cluster of houses located along the highway where two country roads cross, in the southern part of the township, where is a post office, and some little business. The post office was first established on Bear Creek, under the name of Bear Branch, with Henry A. Downey, once a prominent lawyer of Vevay, as postmaster..." The grave of George French is located on the farm of Erwin Iceberg which is located about a mile north of Bear Branch, IN. The broken stone lies in the pasture behind the building of the farm.

Peter and Rosanna were the first members to be laid to rest in the New SalemÕs cemetery and there is a marker to this effect on their graves [1]. Jacob and Sarah lived in the Stock Creek Community [3]. Jacob and Sarah were living on a farm next to other French farms in the 1850 Knox Co. census.

Ersom French is the son of George French and Elizabeth Sturman. Ersom is also the grandson of Henry French of Mercer County, Kentucky. Maybe a clue that Ersom French (FFA Chart #31) and Frederick French (FFA Chart #129) were somehow related? They both had connections to Germany. FrederickÕs father and ErsomÕs grandfather were living in the same vicinity about 50 years earlier – in Shenandoah Co., VA.

History of Knoxville, TN

Knoxville was founded by General James White, who traveled over the mountains from North Carolina to claim land given to him for his service in the American Revolution. White built his first house on the present site of the city, where the Holston and French Broad Rivers join to form the Tennessee River. Because of the many settlers stopping on their way into the wilderness, White added more buildings around his home for guests. He also added a stockade around the cabins to protect his family and friends from the Cherokee Indians across the river. In 1790, William Blount was appointed Governor of the "Territory South of the River OH." Blount decided to move the Capitol from northeast Tennessee to a more centralized settlement around James whiteÕs fort. The city was officially founded on Oct 3, 1791, and was named in honor of General Henry Knox, secretary of war in President WAÕs cabinet. In 1796, when the Southwest Territory became the state of Tennessee, the 16th state in the Union, Knoxville became the first Capitol of Tennessee and remained so until 1812. Peter French moved to Knoxville in 1816.

More Research Needed for First Generation

John French

á     ÒAÓ John French was living in York County, PA, during the early 1700Õs according to the History of Lancaster and York County, 1719 to the present time, by I. Daniel Rupp in 1845. In Jun of 1722, Governor Keith, by way of a treaty with four of the Five Nations of the Iroquois, authorized the surveying of Springettsbury Manor as a proprietary manor for Springet Penn, grandson of William. Three men, John French, Fran. Worley and John Mitchel accomplished the task beginning from a red oak. The FFA believes this was too early for the John French of this line who supposedly was b. ca. 1742, but he most likely was his father, b. 1705.

á     Volume III, Colonial Records, pages 184-5, we read under "Copy of Warrant for Surveying the 'Mannor of Springetsbury'," (1722) the return of Messrs. "Cob. John French, Francis 'Worley, & James Mitchell, Esqrs.," that they completed the survey of the "Mannor of Springets-Bury, upon the River Sesquahannah," etc.

á     Pennsylvania Archives, Vol. II, edited by Thomas Lynch Montgomery, 1906, [73], website:
http://www.archive.org/stream/pennsylvaniaarch14penn/pennsylvaniaarch14penn_djvu.txt
This archives shows a John, Samuel, and William French during 1773 to 1798 (during the American Revolution). John French is in WA Co., PA on a work contract with Benjamine Custard 18 Jan 1782. Samuel French is in 2nd Class in WA Co., PA, undated, but probably 1783. John French is in 6th Class, Associators and Militia, undated, but probably 1783. William French is listed as a Private in Captain CunninghamÕs Company, undated. Samuel French is listed as a Private in Captain HowellÕs Company. Samuel French is listed in Sergeant LeathermanÕs party. William French is listed as a Private in Associators and Militia, undated. They camped at Frenchtown on 17 Oct 1778. John French is 8th Class in York County Militia on 26 Apr 1778. This could indicate that John and 2 brothers: Samuel and William. Other names in this group are Jacob Rudisill, John Rudisile, Baltzer Rudisill, Jonas Rudisily, Heinrich Rudisily, Henry Rudisill, Jonas Rudisill, Hannes Rudisily, and Philip Rudisily.

á     Washington Co., PA: Before me ye Subscribing Justice for ye County Affores'd Came Benjamine Custard & made oath That he hired Wm. French for one months service on ye Stations Under Command of Capt. Cuningham And that he Received a Certificate from ye sd. french for sd. Tower & that sd. Deponant was to Receive ye State Pay for sd. tower. Sworn before me this 18th of Janury, 1782. From the above 2 articles, perhaps Samuel, William, and Peter were sons of John.

John FrenchÕs Wife, Maria Barbara (Surname Unknown)

á     ÒAÓ Maria Barbara Rudesill or Rudisile was b. ca. 1746 in York Co., PA. She was one of 15 children b. to Johan Rudesill and Elizabeth Hamsbacher, all in York Co., PA. See page 218 (shown below). This Rudesill family originated in Germany. This Maria Barbara may be a fit for this line in that John French named one of his daughters Elizabeth, and both John French and Maria Barbara lived in York Co., PA at the same time in 1760 when they m. No further information is given in Ref. [71]. The timeframe fits because their first child was b. ca. 1762.

á     The website for the Ancestors and Descendants of the Surname Rudasill [72] on Rootsweb website:
http://wc.rootsweb.ancestry.com/cgi-bin/igm.cgi?op=SHOW&db=rudspons&recno=20990
shows ÒaÓ Maria Barbara Rudisiele, b. 12 Apr 1730 in the Trinity Lutheran Church in Lancaster, PA. It also lists ÒaÓ Barbara Rudisill, b. ca. 1740 in York Co., PA, d. ca. 1807 in Lincoln Co. ÒAÓ French and ÒaÓ Freinsch are listed, but in no way match. Also, several family members with the name Frantz are listed, but they also donÕt match considering the names and dates. Email: Vanessa R. Several Rule families remained close to the FrenchÕs throughout the years. In 1912 the Mack Rule family lived on my grandmother FrenchÕs farm. She was a widow and her children were m. and gone. The Mack Rules were her only companions. Later, in 1932, Jack and Emma Rule lived with my aunt in Grandmother FrenchÕs old home. Aunt Florence Amanda French Wright was also a widow and alone. They were with her when she d.

Let us get back to the expression ÒBlack DutchÓ. Many people have given me different interpretations, adding to the confusion, until I met a professor in London, England, in 1979. I had gone there to spend ten days doing my own thing and to research the wooden picture with the two fish carved upon it which I had soon learned was our French Coat of Arms with two dolphins. I learned that the dolphins were a religious symbol and were to be used by only the Stuarts and the Frenches. It seems that many of the British who were in the service of the Crown in the colonies were no agreeing with the dictates of King George III. As their discontent became too apparent, their lands were confiscated and they left America and went into other countries. This placed them on the same level as that of a criminal with the British government, or the Crown. When war became inevitable in America, or when it was apparent the situation would change, they returned via Holland and into New York and Pennsylvania – hence the same route of escape employed by criminals or those whose lives were in jeopardy, or who were Òin badÓ with England. Not true Dutchmen, but ÒBlack Dutch.Ó

Amos French is probably misplaced – heÕs probably not a son, but an uncle or some other relative, b. 28 Mar 1755, was a soldier in the Revolutionary War. The Sons of the Revolution and the Daughters of the American Revolution, records only one Private Amos French in the Revolutionary War. He was b. 28 Mar 1755, d. 14 Jan 1814, m. Miss Judith Swett [4]. Note that Amos French, b. in 1831 of this chart, was named after him.

Rebecca had lived at the Deane Hill Apts, #32A, 7700 Gleason Rd., Knoxville, TN 37919. She was born ca. 1907. She says she obtained deeds and land grants proving PeterÕs brothers were Henry and William. Also, she has further info on JoshuaÕs altercation with the English Count and his escape to Germany. She had no heirs.

Unresolved Issues

1. Need to find the will of George Rule Sr., b. 1745-50 in Germany, d. 12 Apr 1819 in Botetourt Co., VA, Volume C, 393, probated Sep 1823. He is supposed to be PeterÕs father-in-law and perhaps his will or land records mention something about Peter. The will is supposed to mention his seven children, including Rosanna, wife of Peter.

2. Was sÕCydecef a city, community, farm, or building in WA Co., MD?

3. Immigration of George Rule (RŸhl) from Germany or Amsterdam to America, ca. 1760-1770.

4. Birth record of Rosanna Rule (RŸhl), PeterÕs wife, in 1773 in Hessen-Darmstadt, Germany.

7. The following photo was taken at the University of Tennessee of the Knoxville Cadets in 1890. The cadets are identified on the back as Asa Brunson Jr., Jno W. Stevall, Shepherd, Black, Compton, Carl, Mills, Brent, French, McLaughlin, D?, Clay, Fate, Jaenson (?), Derry, and ?, at University of Tennessee students. If you can identify ÒFrenchÓ and he is of this line, please email mailto:marafrench@mindspring.com?subject=Chart129.

Incorrect Lines

Johannes Frantz

The FFA does not believe the following information is connected with this line. There is information on a Johannes & Maria Barbara Frantz baptising baby Maria Elizabeth, b. 10 Sep 1765, baptized 17 Nov 1765 in the Hanover Lutheran Church in Berks Co, PA [33]. The surname ÒRŸhl / RuleÓ does not appear in this line. See website: http://wc.rootsweb.ancestry.com/cgi-bin/igm.cgi?op=SHOW&db=keacooke&recno=1178

Joshua French

Rebecca French Freeborg believes that Joshua was PeterÕs father, that Joshua m. ______ Jackson, and that Samuel was JoshuaÕs father. She believes that Samuel had come from England and settled in Vermont. Joshua French was b. 18 Dec 1745 in Stratford, CT, bap. 23 Feb 1746 at Christ Episcopal Church, Stratford, CT, m. _____ Jackson, a widow. Joshua purportedly assaulted an English Count and fled from America to Germany to escape punishment prior to the Revolutionary War in about 1762-64. In Germany, Joshua took the name Frantz and a German wife to reduce the chances of the English authorities discovering his hideout. This altercation with an English Count may have taken place in England or New England. Joshua returned to Boston, MA, in 1765 [3] [10], d. in 1788 [5]. It is believed his wife returned later, probably in 1776 when their son Peter was 14. Can anyone prove or disprove this research? If so, email marafrench@mindspring.com. The Frantz website discusses 3 brothers (Hans, Johann Peter, and Abraham) who emigrated from the Schalbach, Alsace area of Germany to Philadelphia, Pennsylvania on 20 Oct 1747.

The FFA has left all this information about Joshua out because the FFA believes this is an entirely different line. The Joshua who was b. 18 Dec 1745 in Stratford, Fairfield Co., CT, m. Hannah Hartshorn on 20 Feb 1771 and had children Vaniah, Charity, Hannah, and Walter, all of whom never lived in Pennsylvania or Maryland.

John Frantz

The FFA believes the following information is an entirely different family, not a surname French family. There was a John Frantz b. on 15 Dec 1749 b. in Cocalico Twp., Lancaster Co., PA. His parents were Michael Frantz and Magdalena Zug who were from Germany and Switzerland, respectively. This family had almost the same Christian names as this chart: Jacob, Michael, Abraham, Peter. See http://www.hmjacob.com/Z2.html#26 and search for Frantz. Also see http://familytreemaker.genealogy.com/users/o/n/e/Cheryl-M-Oneal-WA/PDFGENEO1.pdf which takes a long time to load.

John French and Maria Barbara, 1st Generation

ÒAÓ Maria Barbara Dellinger is listed as b. 25 Dec 1733 in Chestnut Hill, Philadelphia, PA, m. Johan Peter Tritt, but this Maria d. before 1776; therefore, this is not the correct person in this line.

ÒAÓ Maria Barbara Daelliker Daelliker / Dellinker / Dalliker/ DŠlliker / Delliker is listed on the Falckner Swamp Church records along with the French family. She was b. 8 Jan 1746, d. 7 May 1784 [33]. This death date doesnÕt compute because her death date which would have preceded her marriage date (1789) to William Albright. The names Dellinger and Dellecker have not been found to be interchangeable; they are two different surnames.

Maria Elisabeth French, 2nd Generation

The Passenger and Immigration Lists Index shows a Maria Elisabeth Frantz immigrating in 1775, port uncertain. No other sibling is shown to have immigrated on this date. The FFA believes this is not the correct family.

shows ÒaÓ Maria Barbara Rudisiele, b. 12 Apr 1730 in the Trinity Lutheran Church in Lancaster, PA (probably too early to marry John French because their children were b. between 1762 and 1775 and John was b. 1742). It also lists ÒaÓ Barbara Rudisill, b. ca. 1740 in York Co., PA, d. ca. 1807 in Lincoln Co., NC (since John did not live in NC, it is assumed this Barbara is not a match). ÒAÓ French and ÒaÓ Freinsch are listed, but in no way match. Also, several family members with the name Frantz are listed, but they also donÕt match considering the names and dates. Email: Vanessa R. [95] Stephanie Files, email: sfiles@roadrunner.com (email good in 2010) or noahsark_221@hotmail.com. I have some confusion regarding the children of John Jr and Ever French.  Working backwards through my mother and her mother I found myself descended from Annie Parsons Smith.  Listed as her parents is Joseph W Parsons and Margaret McClellen.  Continuing backward Joseph W Parsons parents are Elizabeth French and Joseph Parsons.  This is one brother and one sister of the Parson/French marriages.  Brothers Joseph and David Parsons married sisters Catharine and Elizabeth French. On the website it said that Joseph and Elizabeth relocated to New York (which they may have), but according to my research into the 1850 census of Tell Township, Huntingdon County, PA they are all living there in 1850.  Joseph and Elizabeth are listed as family number 78 and David and Catharine are family number 79.  I bring this up to actually ask a separate question.  Annie Parsons married Alvin Guy "AG" Smith.  I've tried for 10 years to crack that family line's mystery but I just can't seem to manage it.  AG's father was Aldridge French Smith.  His parents were William Smith and Leah ... .  Aldridge's middle name has caused many to speculate that Leah was also from the French family line somehow, but I can't seem to prove it, nor can I get any further backward on William. The name is just too common I suppose.  Anyway, if you have any knowledge that might help I'd sure appreciate it! Thanks! Stephanie Files Aldridge French Smith 15 Feb 1855 - 10 Dec 1936 m. Annie Parsons 1863 - 14 Jun 1940. William Smith 1819 - 23 Feb 1886 (1850 Census Tell Township, Huntingdon County, PA family number 84) m. Leah (unknown) 1821 - 14 Nov 1904.
