Henry
(1st generation) was probably born in Lesbury, Northumberland,
England. Ref [27] says he was born and married in Germany and may have used the
name Heinrich. It says he left Germany in about 1770, age 15. Birthplace of
Henry in Germany is from ÒPortrait and Biographical Album, Vermilion Co., ILÓ,
1889 Biographical Sketch of Ersom French, son of George French, and grandson of
Henry French, Chicago, Chapman Bros., pgs 735-736. This portrait also says that
after being married to Elizabeth Ersom (a German name), Henry French left his
home in Germany and sought a new field of labor under the banner of freedom, in
the land of liberty [27]. It is assumed that Henry was born in England and met
his presumedly German wife in either England or Germany, and after living with
her at their home in Germany, they immigrated to America.
One
theory is that the family immigrated to Virginia, and then moved to Mercer
County, KY, in about 1773 when their second child was born. However, a general
migration path of other families moving to Mercer Co., KY begins in Shenandoah
County, (West) Virginia [43] where Henry French is listed in the 1790 census.
Here in Shenandoah Co., Henry was recruited by George Rogers Clark to join the
soldiers in the Revolutionary War [40]. As a result, they moved west to KY
[40]. In Kentucky, the family lived in the Harrodsburg area. James Harrod
established Harrodsburg in 1774. The French family was among the first settlers
in Harrodsburg. In 1780 KY was divided into three counties: Jefferson, Fayette,
and Lincoln. In 1769 Daniel Boone wintered in a cave there. Daniel was b. in PA
and after considerable wandering, settled in NC [23].
This is
FFA Chart #192, not yet complete. Ref [5] says Henry French m1. Abigail
Anderson of Frederick Co., VA, on 11 May 1790. Wills of
Frederick Co., VA 1795-1816; Will Book 8, 1804-1810 lists Abraham as the
father of Abigail Anderson. The will of Abraham Anderson of Frederick Co., VA
16 Nov 1805/6 Jan 1806 names his heirs, including his wife Sarah and their
children Frances, Rhodia, Sarah, Abraham Jr., Thesby, Abigail, Richard, and
Eliakim. This family moved to Jackson Co., OH where they eventually died,
therefore, this is not the line of Chart #10 who remained in TN. This same
information comes from the 1730-1830 Settlement & First Families of Back
Creek Valley in Frederick Co., VA by Wilmer L. Kerns. AbigailÕs parents were
Abraham and Sarah, and her siblings were Frances, Rhodia (Rhody), Sarah,
Abraham, Thesby, Richard, and Eliakim. Abigail Anderson was b. 6 Mar 1773 in
Richmond Co. or Henrico Co., VA and died 1840/1 in Jackson Co., OH. Henry of
Chart #10 lived in an earlier generation because he was born in 1755. Henry,
the husband of Abigail, was b. 16 May 1765 in Frederick Co., VA or in
Hagerstown, Washington Co., MD, and d. 1843 in Jackson Co., OH. Martha Wurtele marwurtele@aol.com believes this Henry was
the son of Jacob French of Maryland. The furthest back we can find is from the 1810
Berkeley Co, VA (now WV) Federal Census. It shows a Jacob French with
several children, a George French with several children, a Henry French with
several children, and a John French with several children. IÕll designate this
chart as a new chart which has not yet been researched, Chart #192. A DNA Test has been
done for this line, but not for Chart #10 nor Chart #31.
Although
it seems this Henry was born the exact same year as the Henry in Chart #10,
this Henry is FFA
Chart #31 from KY, not TN.

#10.

33 - In April, 1779 Henry French was appointed trustee of the newly-established
city of Louisville, KY-- "The first official step toward establishing the
town of Louisville at the Falls of the Ohio was taken on the 17th of April,
1779, when the inhabitants who were there, in conformity with the
recommendations of the Court of Kentucky County touching the establishing of
new towns, held a public meeting and appointed trustees for that purpose. The
Trustees selected were William Harrod, Richard Chenowith, Edward Bulger, James
Patton, Henry French, Marsham Brashears, and Simeon Moore. These Trustees then
met and adopted rules for their government. They agreed upon a plan of the town
to be called Louisville, laid off the ground they selected along the river into
half-acre lots, made a map of their work, and appointed April 24, 1779, for
each inhabitant to draw one lot in a public lottery."
