History and Background
Through DNA testing, we were able to research John FrenchÕs
parentage back to Jacob French in West Virginia. See FFA Chart #195
for this chart going back a few more generations.
Early French Family Background in 1800 Kentucky
Using the 1800 Tax List below, we can analyze these
predictions:

#194, had died ca. 8 Jan 1791 and is not listed.

James French, JohnÕs first son, was at
least 18 years old, b. ca. 1782, is listed in Lincoln Co., KY, 8/23/1800 where his father first
entered Kentucky.

only 16 years old and is not listed.

Samuel French, JohnÕs third son, was only
11 years old, but a Samuel is listed in Mercer Co., who could be connected to Henry
French on FFA Chart #31. He could also be on FFA Chart #146.

The Beginning of Orange County Indiana
Before the creation of Orange
County, while it was still a part of Washington County, and for a short
time after its creation and organization, Paoli Township was known as Orange
Township, and was of greater extent than at present. On the 10th of February, 1817, the County Board reorganized the townships
of the county, and Paoli became the center.
In the year 1817 nearly all the territory now embraced in
Orangeville Township was a part of Northwest Township, which then extended to
White River in Lawrence County. The boundary of Orangeville Township was fixed as it now exists by the County Commissioners. It
contains twenty-eight sections of land, being four miles east and west, and
seven north and south, lying between Orleans and Northwest Townships, and
bounded on the north by Lawrence County.
In this township the first entry of land was made by Henry
Shirley April 3, 1811. This was 160 acres in Section 6, at the present site of
the town of Orangeville. The next was made by Valentine Shirley, south of this
in Section 7, 480 acres, July 8, in the same year. No other entries were made
until 1813, when John Dougherty came, and in 1814 James Wilson. Prior to
the year 1820, the following entries were made: In 1815, Andrew Wilson, Charles
Shirley, Jacob Shirley, Joel Halbert, Adam Miller,
Henry Shirley, Nicholas Blair, James Shields, George H. French, Samuel
Blair and Stephen Jessup; in 1816, Thomas Inman, Isaac Scott, Charles Downs,
John Marpin, Josseph Nichols,
Moses Mathers, Jacob Shirley, John Blair and William Redmon; in l817. Thomas Evans, Robert
McCracken, Edward Bryant, Samuel Wilson and Michael Pipher;
in 1818, John Field, Abraham Osborn and Neely Rayborn.
Settlement of Northwest Township
At the re-organization of Orange County in the year 1817
Northwest Township was made to include all of the present township of
Orangeville and that part of Orleans lying west of the meridian line, while its
northern boundary was the East Fork of White River. After several reductions in
size, it was fixed as it yet remains. Its area is thirty square miles, and, as
its name implies, is situated in the northwest corner of the county. The five
sections on the south boundary were originally reserved as saline land, excepting
Section 16, which was reserved for school purposes. In the other ten sections
of Township 2 north and Range 2 west that are situated in Northwest Township,
there were but three entries of land prior to 1820. These were Adam Shirley in
1813, James Wilson, 1818, and William Batman, 1819. The other entries in this
township prior to that year were Samuel Blair, 1816; William M. Blair, 1816; George
H. French, 1817; George Held, 1817; Burton Southern, 1818; Thomas
Brackenridge, 1819, and Thomas Reynolds, 1820. At an election held in Northwest
Township, February 20, 1819, at the house of Samuel Glenn, the following
persons voted: Robert Elrod, John Maxwell, Thomas Inman, John Jarvis, John
Sanders, Benjamin Pinkley, George Head, George Pinkley, Zelek Fisher, Wright
Sanders, Charles Shirley, James Donnell, Thomas Jervis, Joseph Pearson, Henry
Shirley, Stephen Elrod, William Hoard, James Blair, William Kirkman,
William Blair, John Cook, Samuel French, Burton Southern, David Hudson,
Joseph Sanders, John Been, Adam Shirley, Simon Snyder, Charles Downs, Jacob A. Shotts, Lewis Byram, Henry McGee,
Abel Robbins*, William Bland, John Byram,
James Wilson, William Batman and Joseph Wilson. Total number voting
thirty-eight, Burton Southern receiving twenty votes for Justice of the Peace
and John Cook eighteen. John Blair was Inspector, Henry McGee and Lewis Byram were Judges, and Charles Downs and Jacob A. Shotts were Clerks. At this date, however, Northwest
included Orangeville Township, where a large number of these voters then
resided. In March of the following year there was another election, and the
list of voters shows the following names in addition to those just given: John
Bryant, John Hinson. Jonathan Lindley (a Quaker from Orange, NC, who was a
leader in bringing Quakers to Indiana in 1811), David Hudland,
George Hinson, Levi S. Stewart, Jacob Shields, Thomas Wadsworth, Richard James,
Michael Pipher, John Stewart, Samuel Scarlett, James
Shields, Jr., Nathan Bond. Thomas Lindley, Pedigo
Watson, Thompson Freeman and George Hoggs. Up to this
date there had been land entered by only about forty four
persons, and these two returns show a vote of fifty-six, and many more than
twelve of these were then strangers to the land entry record. This would pretty
clearly indicate the presence of a considerable number of squatters at that
date.
The most of the early settlers to Indiana came from
Kentucky, the first being Moses Evans, who arrived in 1812, and settled on the
prairie now bearing his name. About the same time Thomas and William Pound and
Hamilton Reed came in, also James French, who was a bell-maker and did a
large business, trading bells to the Indians, who at the time were numerous in
the vicinity. Shortly after his arrival he was driven off by them, but returned
again when Fort Harrison was erected. His brother George H. French was a
wagoner during the War of 1812 between Ft. Knox,
Kentucky and Fort Harrison, Indiana. David Goble came among the first, giving
his name to the prairie on which he located. Elijah Pound, Ephraim and Joel Kester, the Frakes, William McGlone, R. Beauchamp, David, William and Arthur Boyll, Ephraim, Herman and Smith Sparks, John Carr, John
Gunn and John Foxworthy, who was the first school trustee of the township, were
among those who arrived at an early day. John Gunn put up the first mill, which
was a simple affair run by horse-power, and a little later Bright Thomas, a
colored man, an early settler and natural mechanic, erected a water-power mill,
to which the pioneers from far and near used to come to have their corn ground.
*Based on Abel RobbinsÕ age, he might have been a brother to
Mary Polly Robbins, but not her father, as he married after she was born.
Settlement of Southeast Township
Up to and including the year 1812 the following entries of
land were made in Southeast Township: Township 1 south, Range 1 east - Robert Hollowell, November 30, 1809, 160 acres, Section 1; John Hollowell, November 30, 1809, 320 acres, Section 11; John Hollowell, June 30, 1807, 160 acres, Section 15. Township 1 south. Range 2 east -
Henry H. Jones, March 20, 1812, 160 acres in Section 29. All other persons who
entered land in this township prior to the year 1820, were: David Colclasure in 1814; Thomas Wilson and Thomas Hollowell in 1815; Jacob Smith and Richard Weathers in
1816; John and Henry Holland and Arthur Whitehead in 1817; John Dougherty,
William Harned, William White, Daniel Hadley, James
French and Abraham Colclasure in 1818; John
Coffee, Thomas Maxedon, Thomas Sulling,
Samuel Stalcup, Samuel McGee and Joseph Weathers in
1819.
Today
Northwest Township is one of ten townships in Orange Co.,
IN. In the 2000 census, Northwest Township had a population of 345. French Lick
was named after French traders who first settled in this region about 1800, and
after the salty mineral deposits (or licks) that attracted wildlife, not after
the surname French.
Early French Family Background in
Indiana
From the History of Indiana above, we learn that John
Dougherty was the third man to acquire land in the area, and that was in
1813, the only one that year. In 1815 George H. French came, being one
of 11 men acquiring land. Another report has George H. French listed in
1817. At an election held in Northwest Township on 20 Feb 1819, Samuel
French voted. In 1818, the names John Dougherty and James French
both appear in the Southeast Township. One would surmise that George, Samuel,
and James French were brothers, and that John Dougherty
was the head of household for the Dougherty surname that appears various times
in the French family.

John Dougherty appears in the 1820 census of Paoli,
Orange Co., IN, age 45+. This date coincides as him being a contemporary of
John and Catherine French. He also appears on the 1790 Tax List of Lincoln Co.,
KY. He also appears in the 1810 census of Indiana Territory. He appears as born
in 1743 in Rockbridge Co., VA, and married Isabella Anna Patton in 1768. He d.
22 Feb 1828 at age 85, and is buried at Stampers
Creek Cemetery in Paoli, Orange Co., IN. His gravestone lists all his children,
and none of them married a French; however, they were in the same generation as
James, George H., and Samuel French. No French is listed in this cemetery on
Findagrave.com. John was Captain in Revolutionary 1782. Appointed by Virginia
Gov. Ben. J Harrison. Organized 1st Militia in Kentucky. Served under Gen.
George Rogers Clark. Built and Defended forts. Fought
Indian raids. Came to Indiana in 1810.
So far there is absolutely no documentation that shows
either Philip French (b. ca. 1790) or David French (b. ca. 1765) or Samuel S. Enis French are directly from this line.

Franklin Co., Pennsylvania (in a very German-populated area) to Mary about
1730. John d. before 3 Oct 1755 in Antrim Twp., PA.
John and Mary had the following children: Jacob,
Louisa, George, and John, all born between 1730 and 1742 in
PA. He may, of course, have had more children. The 3 sons
have had 9 DNA tests taken on those lines so far as of April 2011, see FFA

WV, m. Catherine Hedges between 1765-1779 as their first child James was born
ca. 1780. John French did not remain in Berkeley Co., WV, but moved to KY, died
in Lincoln Co., KY before 8 Jan 1791. Most likely all their children were born
in Lincoln Co., KY. However, ÒaÓ John French, father
of Philip, died in Lincoln Co., KY ca. 1824 and his wife Catherine remarried
soon after. Could she be Catherine Hedges?
The Hedges Family
Association claims that Catherine Hedges, b. ca. 1745, daughter of Jonas
Hedges, married John Philip French. This might be a clue as to where Philip
French, b. 1790, needs to go, as the DNA tests of his descendants match with

Stanford, Lincoln Co., KY. Lincoln County was originally part of Virginia and
formed in 1780, and Stanford was the county seat. Lincoln County was one of the
original three counties in Kentucky (Lincoln, Fayette, Jefferson). Kentucky
became a commonwealth in 1792.
John French m. Catherine
Hedges between 1765-1779. John French d. before 8 Jan 1791 in Lincoln Co., KY,
and Catherine Hedges French m. Henry Daugherty as his second wife on 21 May
1792. Henry Daugherty was first married to Jane and had son Henry b. 1784 and
moved to Northwest, Orange Co. IN, by 1810, and died there in 1846.
There is no evidence
whatsoever that her surname was Hedges, see Hedges Family;
however, because John and Catherine gave their son George the middle name
Hedges, it is highly possible that her surname was Hedges.
As the story goes, when John French died ca. 8 Jan
1791, Catherine French m. Henry Daugherty on 21 May 1792 in Lincoln Co., KY.
Henry Dougherty was b. 1742 near Natural Bridge, Rockbridge Co., VA, moved to
Kentucky by 1775. He appears on the 1789 Tax List of Mercer Co., KY, just 3
years before he m. Catherine French.
Catherine Hedges was b. ca. 1743 in Tullises Branch, Frederick Co., VA, the daughter of Jonas
Hedges (b. 1716 in New Castle, Delaware) and Agnes or Angelitje
(a Dutch name) Powelson (b. 1720). Jonas Hedges died
on 27 Feb 1804 in Hedgesville, WV (then called SkinnerÕs Cap).
Elizabeth Hedges, daughter of Jonas Hedges and
sister of Catherine Hedges, m. Jacob Beeson in 1768, and d. in 1825 in
Uniontown, Fayette Co., PA. Jacob Beeson died in 1818. Some researchers have
mix-matched Elizabeth and Catherine Hedges. Also see Ref. [33].
1800 –
No Dougherty or Daugherty appear in the Kentucky 1800 census. 494 men named
French appear in this nationwide census; none in Kentucky nor
Virginia.
1810
– Henry Daugherty Jr. is listed in Washington Co., KY with 6 in the
household. This is the same county where Catherine and John FrenchÕs son, James
French, lived ca. 1797. James was b. ca. 1780. We cannot find Henry Dougherty
Sr. nor Catherine French in 1800 nor 1810.
There are over 52,000 people listed in the 1810
census of Kentucky. Of those, only 26 are French and 35 are Dougherty. No
Henry Dougherty appears in Kentucky nor Indiana. Abel Robbins lived in
Northwest, Orange Co., IN, the same time that George and Samuel French did. He
was born ca. 1780 in NC and lived in Henry, KY, in the 1860 census. In the 1810
census, he is also in Henry, KY. Most likely he was a brother of Mary Polly
Robbins.
Research indicates that John French married
Catherine ÒHedgesÓ who was born 17 Nov 1743 in Tullies
Branch, Frederick Co., VA, the dau. of Jonas Hedges who was b. 1716 in Newcastle Co., DE. Jonas
Hedges m. Agnes (Angelitje) Powelson
in 1738. Agnes was b. before Sep 1720. JonasÕs home plantation was named Tulusses. Their children were born between 1736 and 1755.
Jonas HedgesÕ mother was Catherine Stalcop. And, the
name Hedges was used throughout the French family. See Ref. [35].
Jonas Hedges, 1716-1804, founded Hedgesville, WV.
He received a land grant of 261 acres on 7 Nov 1754 from Lord Fairfax. He and
his wife had about 12 children, including daughter Catherine Hedges.
Joseph Hedges from New Castle, Delaware, was
christened at Shrivenham, Berkshire, England in
1675-76, the son of William Hedges and Mary, who was granted a lot in New
Castle Co., DE on 3 Jan 1677/78 when his son Joseph was a small boy. William
Hedges died in 1678 upon his arrival, and JosephÕs mother Mary appeared as a
widow in Jan 1679 court records. In 1682 William Penn arrived in New Castle.
Joseph Hedges appears on the Tax List in 1701 as an adult. He m1. Mary Fettleplace, m2. Catherine Stalcop
by whom he had son Jonas Hedges in 1716/17 and daughter Catherine Hedges in
1724/25, among others. Son Jonas Hedges had daughter Catherine Hedges who
married John French. The French and Hedges families could have both come from Shrivenham, Berkshire, England. Read a very interesting
recap of the First of the Hedges Family.

for an excellent history of the Hedges family from Don C. Wood, the archivist
at Hedgesville, Berkeley Co., WV. The Hedges family was well-known
in Hedgesville, Berkeley Co., VA, where the French family lived.
Henry Dougherty was b. ca.
1740 near Natural Bridge in Rockbridge Co., VA, and m1. Jane (Hedges?, as there was a Jane Hedges b. 1738) ca. 1765, m2.
Catherine French in 1792 at age ca. 52. Henry d. ca. 1821 in
Mercer Co., KY. HenryÕs father, Michael Dougherty, arrived in America
landing at New Castle, Delaware, on 10 Dec 1727. This could be a very similar
date as to when John French immigrated. Henry, along with at least two of his
brothers (Joseph and Robert) were three of the
original signers of the Cumberland Compact on 1 May 1780. Henry was in Kentucky
by the year 1778. One of Henry DoughertyÕs sons by his first wife Jane, William
Dougherty, married Eliza French in Henry Co., KY on 20 Jan 1800.
Henry Dougherty was Robert
DoughertyÕs brother, and Robert is Julia Ann DoughertyÕs father and she married
Samuel French, JohnÕs son, so there is definitely a connection and they
were together during this migration, evidently. In the French Family Cemetery
in Orange County, Indiana is a headstone for a Katherine
French.
Shortly after 7 Feb 1775,
John Dougherty appears to have left Virginia for the Kentucky country. Henry
followed him permanently within three years, returning to Virginia only to
settle the estate of his father, Michael II, who died in 1782. Henry lived in Mercer County, KY and
Jane having died, he was married to Katherine French, perhaps the widow
of John French.
In Barren County, Kentucky,
a Dougherty family and French family were involved in the disposition of James
Williams Jr.'s inheritance, (James Williams was Nancy
Williams' father, mother of Julia Ann Dougherty, therefore, Nancy Williams
married a Dougherty, in this case, Robert Dougherty) one of the witnesses was a
Samuel French. This could have been Julia's husband. In another tie-in,
Henry Dougherty, Robert DoughertyÕs brother, married a
Katherine French in Lincoln County, KY. This is a quote from Kentucky
Genealogies: ÒHenry (Dougherty) lived in Mercer County, Kentucky and, Jane,
having died, was married to Katherine French, perhaps the widow of John
French, May 21, 1792. By 1797, Henry lived in Shelby County and when the
Gallatin County line was drawn the following year, it ran two miles north of
his farm on the road to Shelbyville to the mouth of the Kentucky River. He is
last found in records in Henry Co., KY in 1800." end quote.

Scott was a Land Commissioner in Henry Co., KY, "for the division of lands
in Henry Co. and the State of KY of the one part and Joseph Sidebottom and Henry
Dougherty, assignee of Joel Jackson, assignee of William Roberts, assignee
of Benjamin Roberts of the other part...as commissioner of aforesaid by ..of the Act of Assembly in that case made and provided
and by the virtue of a receipt from Benjamin Roberts to Richard Hogg for three
land warrants, two of 5,000 acres each and one for 5,625 acres No. 14230,
14231, and 14232 which receipt is dated September 13,1782, we have proceeded to
divide between the said Hogg and Joseph Sidebottom, Henry Dougherty a
certain tract of land by its survey of 15,000 acres surveyed in the name of
Richard Hogg lying and being on some of the headwaters of Little Kentucky--Drennon's Creek and Mill Creek and the part which we have alotted to the said Joseph Sidebottom and Henry

Cumberland County was where the Williams family lived. Nancy Williams
was Julia Ann DoughertyÕs mother. Julia married Samuel French [5].
Nancy Williams was b. 1765 in VA, m. Robert Dougherty, and d. 1848 in Barren Co., KY, age
93. Robert Dougherty was b. 1752 in Wythe Co., VA, and d. 1822 in Barren Co.,
KY.
Kentucky does not have a 1790
census. 1790 census records are available only for Connecticut, Maine,
Maryland, Massachusetts, New Hampshire, New York, North Carolina, Pennsylvania,
Rhode Island, South Carolina, and Vermont. Virginia is also not included, so it
is very difficult to find early ancestors.

as military commissions in Harrodsburg, Lincoln Co., KY.
1790 -- John French is listed on the 1790 Census Tax List of Lincoln Co., KY.

John French died ca. 8 Jan
1791 when his estate was appraised for 65;3;6 Pounds,
appraised by John Dougherty, Andrew Doods, and Henry

John French's death notice
tells us several things: he knew John Dougherty (unless he was just appointed the
appraiser) and John Dougherty lived in the same area, he died the year before
his widow remarried, and the record is from Lincoln Co., KY which tells us that
perhaps all his children, including George Hedges French and Samuel and James
were born in Lincoln Co., KY.
Old Crab Orchard in
Stanford, Lincoln Co., KY, is where early Kentucky pioneers transacted their
business at the Stanford Court House and passed through Old Crab Orchard on
their way to the west, usually starting in Virginia. In this way, they could
travel together, bring their hunting knives and guns
for protection, as the pioneers were afraid to travel alone through Indian
territory.
John Dougherty of Lincoln
Co., KY, married Mary Magil on 2 Oct 1797. Another
John Dougherty was b. 19 Sep 1756 in Monongalia, WV, d. 23 May 1820 in Estill,
KY, and m. Susan Parker. No French lived in Lincoln Co., KY, just prior to the
Revolutionary War in 1776.
Henry Pope, an appraiser of
John FrenchÕs estate, was b. 8 Aug 1759 in Lincoln Co., KY, and d. 12 Mar 1802
also in Lincoln. These dates are shown only because they might parallel the
dates of John French, only being 10 years later. Henry m. Margaret Goodnight on
24 Jun 1782.
No French is listed in the
Kentucky Pioneer and Court Records for Lincoln County, Marriage Index. Perhaps
John married in VA or WV.

IMPORTANT: I've always wondered how
Catherine Hedges could be born ca. 1743 in Tullises
branch, Frederick Co., VA, and marry John French, born probably ca. 1740, and
have James, George H., and Samuel in the 1780s. It just seems like a far
stretch. Wouldn't it seem more logical to fit another generation in there, for
example, "a" Samuel, b. ca. 1760? It just seems more probable that
Catherine would have children when she was 20 and not 40.
Whether these following
children are for the Fourth Generation or the Fifth Generation, the children
were born between 1780 and 1791, the year John died. Proof that George Hedges
French, Samuel French, and James French were brothers is:

Samuel French entered 2 tracts of land in this section in 1836. His name
appears in a list of voters in 1819. In 1817 George French had entered land in
section 31. James French and George Hedges French entered tracts in the same
section in 1837 and 1840. There are six graves in the little burial plot in a
field, and three of the stones have inscriptions, for George, Samuel, and Julia
(wife of Samuel). Robert D. French was George Hedges FrenchÕs son.

and d. between 1842-1850. When the estate of JamesÕ brother GeorgeÕs wife Polly
was settled in 1867, 3 children of George and Polly had died. The estate also
said "George had brothers, Samuel and JamesÓ. This statement has been very
important as it opens up a whole new line of this family with James. It also
indicates that all 3 brothers (George, Samuel, and James) had died before 1867.
James died before 1850, George d. 28 Jun 1847, and Samuel d. 21 Sep 1841
– therefore, this statement is correct.
James French is listed in
Lincoln Co., Kentucky on 8/23/1800, as an Early Kentucky Settler.
Lincoln Co. is where his father John first entered Kentucky, but died ca. 8 Jan
1791 and is not on the list. Because James is on this list, he must have been
an adult of 18+ years and born in 1782 or before. He must have died before the
1850 census.
In the 1850 census
of Southeast, Orange Co., IN, is 55 year old woman
named Mary French, b. 1795 in NC. Mary was the wife of James; she is a widow,
JamesÕ family is the only French family who lived in Southeast, Orange Co., IN,
while Samuel and George Hedges French lived in Northwest, Orange Co., IN. Mary
was living with her daughter, Evaline French (21, b.
1829), in this 1850 census, and with her son-in-law, James Bobbitt (27), and
grandson William C. Bobbitt (2).
In the 1860 census
of Southeast, Orange Co., IN, Mary French is listed as b. ca. 1795 in NC,
living with her daughter, Elizabeth White (44, b. 1816) and her son-in-law
Drury White (50), and their 4 children.
James French m. Mary. This we know because of
the 1850 and 1860 census records in Southeast, Orange Co., IN. James was the
only brother who lived in Southeast. George and Samuel lived in Northwest. In
the 1850 and 1860 census records, JamesÕ wife Mary was a widow and lived with 2
of her children, Evaline and Elizabeth. Therefore,
James had died before 1850.
Note that the children, Evaline and Elizabeth, refer to their mother as Mary and
not Polly as George Hedges FrenchÕs wife was called. Also, George Hedges
FrenchÕs wife, Polly, is listed in the 1850 and 1860 census records in
Northwest, Orange Co., IN, so these are two different women.
Mary was b. ca. 1795 in NC
as stated in the 1850 and 1860 census records of Southeast, Orange Co., IN. A
large group of Quakers from Orange Co., NC, lead by the Lindley family, moved
to Indiana in the early 1800s and called their new land Orange Co. No evidence
has been found if MaryÕs surname was Lindley. I did find a James M. French who
m. Mary Jane Ratliff in Mercer Co., WV, between 1785-1971.
1800 Tax List – James French is listed in Lincoln Co., Kentucky.
This tells us that James was at least 18 in 1800; therefore, born before 1782.
1810 census – Kentucky, six men named French found, none
appropriate. James would be ca. 26.
1814 – James probably married by this date to Mary
as his children were born shortly thereafter. He may have married in KY, as he
did not arrive in IN until 1818.
1820 Census for Orange County, Indiana where Julia Ann and
Samuel French lived and raised their family. James was in Greenfield, Southeast Township,
Orange Co., Indiana. He owned land in Southeast Township in 1818.

Samuel French entered 2
tracts of land in Orange Co., IN, in 1836. His name appears in a list of voters
in 1819. In 1817 George French had entered land in section 31. James French and
George Hedges French entered tracts in the same section in 1837 and 1840. From
this data (and other data), we conclude that Samuel, George, and James were
brothers and that they all had land in Orange Co., IN, in 1837.
Up to and including the
year 1812 the following entries of land were made in Southeast Township:
Township 1 south, Range 1 east - Robert Hollowell,
November 30, 1809, 160 acres, Section 1; John Hollowell,
November 30, 1809, 320 acres, Section 11; John Hollowell,
June 30, 1807, 160 acres, Section 15. Township 1 south.
Range 2 east - Henry H. Jones, March 20, 1812, 160
acres in Section 29. All other persons who entered land in this township prior

The above land deed was
dated 10 Aug 1841. This would indicate that James French should be in the 1840
census of Orange Co., IN. Peter Stallcup lived in
Southeast, Orange, IN, in the 1820, 1830, and 1840 census records. In 1850 he
was in Posey, Washington Co., IN. He was b. 1797 and m. 11 Feb 1819. In 1870 at
age 72, he states he was b. in NC and lives in Stampers
Creek, Orange Co., IN. I researched him to perhaps gather information on James
French to no avail. Similarly, I researched William Russell and had no success
as to why he was on a land deed with James French. The only other thing I
gained from these deeds was in deed CV-0077-126 shows that James French was a
Senior, telling us he had a son James French by 1822 in IN.

Note: Apparently another James French appears in
Lincoln Co. KY, in the year 1786 indicating he was born at least by 1768 or
before, when he received a land grant of 47 acres, Book 16, Page 82, Date
Survey: 6-28-1786, in Lincoln Co., KY, Watercourse: Otter Creek. Other early land grants were owned by the French family in Madison,
Bourbon, and Fayette Counties. All these counties changed their
boundaries and other county names were added in the 18th century. This
would be FFA Chart #14, the James French, 1765-1835, who came from Virginia
to Lincoln Co., KY, after serving in the Revolution and was married in Boonesborough 19 Jun 1783 to Keziah
Calloway.

The French Family Cemetery
in Bonds, Orange Co., IN, lists George Hedges French as b. 1 Oct 1774 in KY,
and dying on 28 Jun 1847 in IN, participated in the
War of 1812, was a Veteran under Capt. Zachariah Lindley (a Quaker family from
Orange, NC, who lead in bringing Quakers to Indiana in 1811) in the 5th
Regiment in the Indiana Militia. It states he was married to Mary ÒPollyÓ
Robbins on 8 Jun 1809 in Louisville, Jefferson Co., KY. If the birth year of
1774 is true, then he married at age 35 and died at age 73. Otherwise, if his
birth year of 1784 is true, then he married at age 25 and died at age 63. From
the 1820, 1830, and 1840 census records, we know for sure he was born in 1784.
Also, if the 3 known
siblings were born in 1882, 1884, and 1889, there could be sisters involved who
might lead us to finding more accurate dates and names. See Early Kentucky Settler.
George Hedges French is
listed in the Year Book of the Society of Indiana Pioneers as moving to Orange
Co., IN, by 1813, and he was in the War of 1812 in the Indiana militia. Land
records do not appear in Indiana until 1817; therefore, his son Jonathan was
born in KY in 1810, and then the move and the war entered the picture, and no
child was born until 1817, but we do not know if that child was born in KY or
IN.
George was a wagoner (driver of a horse-drawn wagon) for the Army during
the War of 1812, carrying supplies between Ft. Knox, Kentucky (just south of
Louisville), and Fort Harrison, Indiana. Twice his wagons,
loaded with provisions, were captured by the Indians. Later, he moved
with his family northeast of Vincennes, Indiana, and then to a place on the
prairie near Terra Haute, Indiana. This tells us that George and his
family were very mobile between 1812 and 1817 when he bought land in Indiana.
George Hedges French m.
Mary Polly Robbins on 8 Jun 1809 by John Hite, a preacher of gospel, when
George was 25 and Mary was 15, in Louisville, Jefferson Co., KY. She was b. ca.
1794 in VA according to the 1820 census, and b. ca. 1794 in NC according
to the 1860 census. Mary Polly Robbins d. in 1867 in
Orange Co., IN.
The library sent a copy of
the 1855 application for bounty land by widow Mary French (due to George H.
French's service in the War of 1812). This includes 6 pages of handwritten
testimony. In her testimony Mary says "that she was married to the said
George H French in the County of Jefferson State of Kentucky on or about the
8th day of June 1809 by John Hite a preacher of gospel and that her name before
her said marriage was Mary Robbins ..."
Mary Robbins may have been
from the Robbins family who lived in Breckinridge Co., KY, as also seen in FFA Chart #151.
We have no clue as to why
George and Mary named their first child Jonathan. This name must have been on
the Robbins side.

George arrived in IN ca. 1815, which could mean that he lived in Kentucky up
until then, and that he was married in KY and his first children were born in
KY. Therefore, he must be in the 1810 census of KY and in the 1820 census of
IN.
1815: In the settlement of
Orangeville Township, Indiana, the first entry of land was made by Henry
Shirley April 3, 1811. This was 160 acres in Section 6, at the present
site of the town of Orangeville. The next was made by Valentine Shirley, south
of this in Section 7, 480 acres, July 8, in the same year. No other entries
were made until 1813, when John Dougherty came, and in 1814 James
Wilson. Prior to the year 1820, the following entries were made: In 1815,
Andrew Wilson, Charles Shirley, Jacob Shirley, Joel Halbert,

logical place to look for him might be with the family Robbins, of which there
are 11 in the 1810 census in Kentucky. Absalom Robbins was b. 11 Sep 1765 in
NC, married on 13 Mar 1787 in Franklin, VA, and d. Jun 1860 in Breckinridge
Co., KY, at age almost 100. His father was Jacob Robbins, and his mother was
Mary Wells, and his wife was Mary Ogle; therefore, it seems to reason that he
would name a daughter Mary. However, after further research, I see he had
children named Micajah, Elizabeth, George, Job,
Nancy, Absolom, Charity, John, and Mahala, and no Mary. In the 1850 census, Absalom Robbins
was living in Sand Creek, Decatur Co., IN, the same town and same 1850 census
where the French family was living from FFA Chart #31. Abel
Robbins lived in Northwest, Orange Co., IN, the same time that George and
Samuel French did. He was born ca. 1780 in NC and lived in Henry, KY, in the
1860 census. In the 1810 census, he is also in Henry, KY. Abel Robbins most
likely was Mary Polly RobbinsÕ brother. He m. Mary Watkins on 29 Feb 1808.

62y/9m/27d according to the French Family Graveyard in Northwest Township,
Orange Co., IN. There he is listed as a Veteran in the War of 1812 under Capt.
Zachariah Lindley, 5th Regiment, Indiana Militia. His gravestone
says he died at age 62 years, 9 months, and 27 days, would indicate he was born
on 1 Sep 1784.
James French, his brother,
was one of the administrators of the estate of George H. French. He died
intestate, and his heirs were his children.

Mercer co., KY, in the household of William Daugherty, who was born before
1775. No other William Daugherty is listed in the 1820 census in either Kentucky or Indiana. One of Henry DaughertyÕs
sons by his first wife Jane, William Dougherty, married Eliza French in Henry
Co., KY on 20 Jan 1800. William died before 7 Mar 1816 in Madison Co., KY.

not French. In 1810, William lived in Louisville, Jefferson Co., KY. William Dougherty d. 22 Nov 1852 in Greene Co., IN, or in
Louisville in about 1814. More research is needed on this line.

Michael Dougherty who moved from Chester Co PA c 1737 to Augusta Co VA (now
Rockbridge) had a son Michael. This Michael was living in Wythe Co VA by 1763
died in 1782. This younger Michael had 7 children: Henry was born in Rockbridge
Co VA 1740 deceased by 1821; John b 1743 in Rockbridge Co VA was the first
Dougherty into KY as early as 1775 (see Register, April 1955 p134) He died
in Indiana; Joseph, born in Rockbridge Co VA in early 1740's living in Shelby
Co KY in 1830; William died in VA 1773; George; Robert; Michael.
Henry was first married to
a woman named Jane. Henry moved north into Henry Co KY; the state line changed in
that area to Trimble Co where Henry died. Only known children I could find were
Jane and William Daugherty. Jane married Burton Mulliken
in Shelby Co KY 1799.

in the 1810 census of Washington Co., KY, with 8 in the family:

he was b. 15 Mar 1784 in Breckinridge Co., KY. Samuel m. Julia Anne Dougherty
on 11 Oct 1811 in Kentucky, he d. 21 Sep 1841 in IN.
His gravestone states he died at 52 years, 5 months, 16 days, making his birth
date 5 Apr 1789. Other researchers show the birth date as 5 Jun 1782, but this
has not been verified. Because Samuel was the first to be buried at the French
Family Cemetery in Bonds, Orange Co., IN, in 1841, and his brother was buried
there in 1847, and SamuelÕs wife Julia was buried there in 1854, one would
expect the birth year of 1789 to be quite accurate. SamuelÕs wife, Julia, was
born in 1796, and would therefore be 7 years younger than her husband Samuel
instead of 14 years younger.
Samuel French is listed in
Mercer Co., Kentucky in 1800, as an Early Kentucky Settler
with his brother James.
When the estate of SamuelÕs
brother GeorgeÕs wife Polly was settled in 1867, 3 children of George and Polly
were dead. It also said "George had brothers, Samuel and JamesÓ. Because
James was mentioned last, we suppose he would be the youngest. This statement
also eliminates the possibility of Philip French being a brother; Philip moved
to Helt, Vermillion Co., IN, also before 1820.
Samuel m. Julia Anne
Dougherty on 11 Oct 1811 in Kentucky. Julia was b. 11 Oct 1796 and d. 4 Apr
1854 and is buried next to her brother-in-law George Hedges French and her
husband Samuel French at the French Family Cemetery in Bonds, Orange Co., IN. A
researcher states that Julia married later in life to William Harris on 26 Mar
1851 – this needs to be researched.
Julia Ann Dougherty was the
daughter of Robert Dougherty and Nancy Williams who were married in
Nicholasville, Jessamine Co., KY. Samuel and Julia French homesteaded in
Northwest Territory in Orange County, IN. See Julia Ann Dougherty pedigree at
Ref. [34].
Robert DoughertyÕs will is
found on page 310 of Barren County, Kentucky Will Book 2, written 20 June 1822;
probated Oct 1823. Named wife as Nancy; daughter - Mary
Allen; son - Robert. More daughters - Elizabeth Gassaway
and Sarah. Daughter Nancy had a daughter Nancy. More sons: Henry, Gandor, Gallatin and Mark (the youngest sons). Dau: Julia French. Sons:
Joseph & James W. Uncle Joseph Dougherty in Shelby County, Kentucky and
James Williams, an uncle in Jessamine County, Kentucky. Eldest sons were
Joseph & James. Executors were his wife Nancy, John Glover, Robinson P. Beauchamp. Witnesses: John Glover and Lewis W.

1800, '01, '02, '04, '07. He was our second Senator,
and served from 1808-12. He was an honest man, true and faithful; a man of

and was trusted in all things. He left political life in 1812, and like
Cincinnatus of old, retired to his plow and the duties of domestic life, with a

In Barren County, Kentucky,
a Dougherty family and French family were involved in the disposition of James
Williams Jr.'s inheritance, (James Williams was Nancy
Williams' father, mother of Julia Ann Dougherty, therefore, Nancy Williams
married a Dougherty, in this case, Robert Dougherty) one of the witnesses was a
Samuel French. This could have been Julia's husband or her
Father-in-law. In another tie-in, Henry Dougherty, Robert DoughertyÕs brother,
married a Katherine French in Lincoln County, KY. This
is a quote from Kentucky Genealogies: ÒHenry (Dougherty) lived in Mercer
County, Kentucky and, Jane, having died, was married to Katherine French,
perhaps the widow of John French, May 21, 1792. By 1797, Henry lived in Shelby
County and when the Gallatin County line was drawn the following year, it ran
two miles north of his farm on the road to Shelbyville to the mouth of the
Kentucky River. He is last found in records in Henry Co., KY in 1800." end

you might think he is related to Henry French of Mercer Co., KY, FFA Chart #31,
perhaps his brother, and that he might be the father of George Hedges French,
Samuel, and James.

Julia Doughtery
was b. 1780 in PA as per the 1870 census of Pittsburgh, Allegheny Co.,
PA, when she was 90 years old. She was living with Sarah A. Dougherty, age 46,
relationship unknown, and families with the surnames Marks, McDonald, Conaway, Mallerry, Hindman, Aekens, Fritz, McDermot, Whalen, Thompsen, Rowen, and Brown.
Julia Doughtery
is listed in the 1860 census, b. 1780 in PA, living in Philadelphia,
with Daniel Daugherty, age 48, and with families with the surnames Gillan, Sheppard, McCormick, Kegan,
and McConnell. Apparently this is either another Julia Doughtery
or she did not change her name to French.
In the 1900 Census,
Samuel's daughter, Mary Ann Bruner, stated that her mother and father were born
in Kentucky. She was living in Des Moines, Iowa with a daughter at the time
[5].

Mercer's Company, 2 Aug. 1756 Roll gave name, date and place of
enlistment, age, height, trade, country, description. Huh?
Orange Co., IN. Samuel
French entered 2 tracts of land in this section in 1836. His name appears in a
list of voters in 1819. In 1817 George French had entered land in section 31.
James French and George Hedges French entered tracts in the same section in
1837 and 1840. There are six graves in the little burial plot in a field, and
three of the stones have inscriptions. A Paoli newspaper of 1841 contains an
obituary of Samuel French, which states he left a wife and nine children.
From this data (and other
data), we conclude that:
Samuel, George, and James
were brothers and that they all had land in Orange Co., IN, in 1837, also
meaning that they were still living in 1837.
Samuel arrived in IN ca. 1819, which could mean that he lived in Kentucky up
until then, and that he was married in KY and his first children were born in
KY.
Because Samuel had 10
children, one child must have died before 1841 when he died.
SamuelÕs wife outlived him.
1817 -- Samuel is on the Tax List for Northwest
Township in about 1817. Entered land in 1836. Old
homestead was still standing a couple of years ago and I have pictures and
pictures of the headstones in cemetery by house. Who wrote this?

Samuel French d. 21 Sep
1841 at age 52y/5m/16d and is buried in the French Family Graveyard in
Northwest Township, Section 29, T3N R2W, Orange County, IN. From
a newspaper article at the time Samuel French died, it stated he was 54 years
old. Since he died 2 September 1841, that would make his birth year 1787, which
is incorrect.

living with Charles H. F. French, son, b. 1860 and with Asa
Dowden, a lodger, age 59, b. 1801.
1880 Census – John Bennett French is 67, b. in KY, living
in Stringtown, Fountain Co., IN, married to Eliza,
and states that both his father and mother were born in Virginia.
1910 Census -- Southeast, Orange Co., IN, John French is 95
years old, widowed, and living with his son Stephens French who is the head of
the household, age 61, b. 1849 in IN. Stephens states
that his father was born in KY and his mother in IN.
Stephens was married to Susan M, age 57, b. 1853 in IN.
Their daughter was Hattie French, age 15, b. 1895 in IN.
5.2 Elizabeth French, b. 1816 in KY, d. after 1860, m. Drury White, but
neither of them appears in the 1870
census. Their son Sidney White stayed in Orange County and died in 1875.
There is a marriage record for Drury White and Elizabeth "Bird" - did
Elizabeth marry someone else first, or was Drury WhiteÕs first wife named
Elizabeth Bird? Mary French, ElizabethÕs mother, is living in the Drury and
Elizabeth White household in the 1860
census in Southeast, Orange County, IN [2]. Mary is 65, Elizabeth is 44, b.
1816; Drury White is 50, b. 1810; and their children William, 18; John, 16;
Drury, 12; and Irvin, 7. In the previous 1850
census of Southeast, Orange Co., IN, ElizabethÕs mother Mary French is
living with her younger daughter, Evaline French who
m. James Bobbitt. Mary was born in NC.
Their children were Sidney
White, b. 1835; Charles White, b. 1839; William White, b. 1842; John White, b.
1845; Drewery or Drury Jr. b. 1847; and Irvin White,

Evaline must have died shortly
after 1850. James Bobbitt m2. Lydia Ann Hollody on 20 Sep 1855 in Orange Co.,
IN, and appears with him in the 1860 census of StamperÕs Creek (Southeast),
Orange Co., IN, and EvalineÕs son, William C.
Bobbitt, is living with them. Furthermore, EvalineÕs
mother, Mary, who had lived with them in the 1850 census, is living with EvalineÕs sister, Elizabeth in the 1860 census in Southeast.

Jonathan lived in Martin Co., IN, this being the first census where he was
married. He is not listed as head of household; therefore, he probably is
living with his father or the Batchelor family, the
later of whom do not live in Martin Co. His father d. 28 Jun 1847 in Northwest
Township, Orange Co., IN, and would be in that area in 1840. His father George
is in the 1840 census of North West, Orange Co., IN, with 10 in the family, one
male being age 20-29 who was probably Jonathan. JonathanÕs wife Catherine would
have been 27 in 1840, and she is not listed in this census.
In the 1850 census
of Columbia, Martin Co., IN, they live with their children: Elizabeth 16,
Samuel 14, James 12, Mary 9, Hugh 4, and Sarah 1.
In the 1860 census
of Widner, Knox Co., IN, Jonathan (50) appears with
Catharine (47), and 3 children: Hugh 15, Sarah E. 12, and Juliann 6.
By the 1870 census
of Widner, Knox Co., IN, Jonathan had died and
Catharine was living with daughters Sarah 21 and Julia A. 16.
In the 1880 census
of Widner, Knox Co., IN, Catharine was living with
daughter Julia A 26.
Jonathan was issued 40
acres of land on 10 Aug 1841 near Vincennes, Indiana.

A descendant of this line

before 1867 and probably before 1830, as his name is not listed in his motherÕs
will of 1867.

Nancy Elizabeth Humphreys on 20 May 1834 in Morgan Co., IL. She uses her
middle name Elizabeth. She was b. in 1817 in KY. The 1870 census states that she was born in 1824 in KY. William was a
carpenter. He probably died before 1867 as his name is
not listed in his motherÕs will of 1867. Need to re-check the 1870 census.

Thomas 7, William 5, Ellen 3, and newborn James. William lives in the 1860
census in Vigo, Knox Co., IN, with his wife Nancy, and 10 of their
children. He lives in Newton Co., MO in the 1870 census with two of
their younger children, James and Annie, as well as a 10-year old boy named
William Robbins/Robins, b. 1860 [2]. This boy is probably William Robbins, son
of Jonathan and Elisabeth Robbins, who is living with his parents in the 1880
census of Haddon, Sullivan Co., IN. Jonathan Robbins was b. 1826 and is
probably a relative of Mary Polly Robbins, William D. FrenchÕs mother.
5.8 Elizabeth French, b. 1816 in KY? I hope I havenÕt confused her with
the daughter of James French, b. 1816, but in Southeast, not Northwest, Orange
Co., IN. She died before 1867 as her name is not
listed in the will of her mother in 1867.
5.9 Hulda French, b. 1 Dec 1817 per Ref. [2] in Martin Co., IN according to
the 1860 census (could she have been
a twin of James?); m. John Prow on 25 May 1837, d. 8 Aug 1888 in Paoli, Orange
Co., IN, age 71. This is the exact same area where the descendants of FFA Chart #186 lived
at the same time; therefore, they might be connected especially since both
families have the same DNA. John Pro was b. 8 Dec 1808 in NC, the son of
Christian Prow and Martha Downs. He d. 6 Apr 1870 in Paoli,
IN. They had 8 children: Blance, Samuel J., Gerkin, Polly, George W., Elizabeth Ann, Sarah J., and John
Prow. In the 1860 census, they were living in Salem, Washington Co., IN; John
Pro was 53 and a carpenter, Huldah Pro was 46, and
their 5 children living with them were George W. Pro 20 a blacksmith, Eliza Ana
Pro 16, Sarah J. Pro 15, L.M.D. Pro (spelling changed to Prows) 22 an attorney
at law, and John Prows 10.

hope I havenÕt confused him with the son of James French Sr. b. 1818, but in

An article on p. 290 about
the James and Eliza French Family of Widner Townhip and several of their Descendants in the Knox
County, Indiana, History Book, 1988 edition, states that James was born in 1816
and Eliza was born in 1824; however, their gravestones say 1818 and 1823.

census, they were living in Jefferson, Sullivan Co., IN. They had at least
4 children: Rosa Ellen Robbins, Elizabeth Robbins, Charles R. Robbins, and Huldy H. Robbins. In the 1880 census of Sullivan
Co., IN, Jacob Robbins is listed as a widower, but perhaps the gravestones are

1884 and is buried at the Emerson Hill Cemetery, Gibson Co., IN, the husband of
Sarah Jane Montgomery Roberts – they must mean she was living in the
township of Montgomery. Sarah Jane Roberts d. 9 Oct 1921 and was buried at the
Emerson Hill Cemetery in Gibson Co., IN; therefore, she predeceased him.
Jane and John Roberts lived
next door to Mary Jane's sister Cynthia in the 1850 census of Orange
County, IN. In the 1880 census of Montgomery, Gibson Co., IN, Jane and

Jane Logan is listed as Jane Rebecca Arms as her maiden name, Peckenapaugh is her married named, so she must have married
a second time.

Eli H. Faucett who was b. 15 Oct 1824 in Orange Co.,
NC, and became a native of Orange County, N. C., on 6 Jun 1846. Eliza was
living in 1900 in Northwest, Orange Co., IN, age 71, and d. 25 Jul 1900. Eli
was the sixth of twelve children of James and Elizabeth (Jeffers) Faucett, the parents both natives of North Carolina, the
father of Irish and the mother of Swedish descent. In the Fall
of 1832 they came to this county and settled near the present home of Eli H. At
that time the country was very wild, but they went diligently at work, and in
time made a comfortable home. Their son, Eli H., was kept at work and only
received a meager education. He remained with his parents until his marriage,
June 11, 1846, to Eliza French. This lady bore her husband thirteen children,
only six of whom are now living: Mary E., who married B. P. Gerkin;
N. J., the wife of G. W. Pruett; Harriet E., who married John F. Pruett; Ida
B., Carrie J. and Nora A., the last three being yet with their parents. Eli H.
has made farming his occupation, and now owns 225 acres. He is a Republican,
and he and wife are members of the Methodist Episcopal Church. July 19, 1862,
he enlisted in Company E, Sixty-sixth Regiment Indiana Volunteer Infantry. He was
made Corporal, and served as such until mustered out April 7, 1863, by reason
of a wound received at Richmond, KY. Eli H. Faucett
d. 8 Aug 1913 in Orange Co., IN, and is buried at the Faucett
Cemetery in Orange Co., IN.

17 Jan 1850, and is buried at the French Cemetery, Montgomery Co., KY. He died

information about Jonathan French, who is included in the French surname DNA
project, Group 4, which also includes David French of KY, John Peter French of
SC, and Jacob French of Berkeley Co., WV.
The library sent copies of
2 family group sheets for the George Hedges French - Mary "Polly"
Robbins family. There isn't a date or contact name on either of these sheets,
but they were located in the library's "French family" folder
(Genealogy Collection, Box 41, Folder #2). Each group sheet lists the same 10
children for this couple, but in a different order. And both sheets say that
the oldest child was Jonathan French, b. 1810 in Indiana. It looks like the compiler of one of
the family group sheets had found probate papers for George's wife because it
says: "When her estate was settled in 1867 3 ch.
were dead." It also says "George had brothers, Samuel and
James".

The second group sheet also
says: "John C. French m. Susannah was son of Samuel, George's brother.
The library sent a copy of
the 1855 application for bounty land by widow Mary French (due to George H.
French's service in the War of 1812). This includes 6 pages of handwritten testimony.
In her testimony Mary says "that she was married to the said George H
French in the County of Jefferson State of Kentucky on or about the 8th day of
June 1809 by John Hite a preacher of gospel and that her name before her said
marriage was Mary Robbins ..."
There was also a copy of an
article (p. 290) about the James and Eliza French family of Widner
Township and several of their descendants in the Knox County (Indiana) History
book - 1988 edition. This article says James was born in 1816 and Eliza was
born in 1824.

02 September 1841. He married Julia Ann Daugherty Bef. 1824 in Probably
Kentucky, daughter of Samuel Daugherty and Polly Williams. Notes for Samuel
French: From an article in the newspaper when Samuel FRENCH died, it stated he
was 54 years old. Since he died 2 September 1841, that
would make his birth year 1787.He would have been 9 years older than Julia Ann.
In the 1900 Census, Samuel's daughter, Mary Ann Bruner, stated that her mother
and father were born in Kentucky. She was living in Des Moines, Iowa with a daughter
at the time. I have the photocopy of the census record.

Eli Faucett: ELI H. FAUCETT, a native of Orange
County, N. C., was born October 15, 1824,being the sixth of twelve children of
James and Elizabeth Faucett, the parents both natives
of North Carolina, the father of Irish and the mother of Swedish descent. In
the fall of 1832 they came to this county and settled near the present home of
Eli H. At that time the country was very wild, but they went diligently at work,
and in time made a comfortable home. Their son, Eli H., was kept at work and
only received a meager education. He remained with his parents until his
marriage, June 11, 1846, to Eliza French. This lady bore her husband thirteen
children, only six of whom are now living: Mary E., who married B. P. Gerkin; N. J., the wife of G. W. Pruett; Harriet E., who

unable to find out where or the name of Samuel's parents. Samuel had a brother

The most of the early
settlers to Linton Township, Vigo Co., IN, came from Kentucky, the first being
Moses Evans, who arrived in 1812, and settled on the prairie now bearing his
name. About the same time Thomas and William Pound and Hamilton Reed came in,
also James French, who was a bell-maker and did a large business,
trading bells to the Indians, who at the time were numerous in the vicinity.
Shortly after his arrival he was driven off by them, but returned again when

How could James live in Vigo, Vermilion, Saline, Madison, and Orange Counties?
If he lived in Vigo Co., he probably had sons Israel, Thomas, and E. P. French.

Madison County, IllinoisÓ, ÒaÓ James French shows up
in 1813.
In Gallatin Co., KY on 14
Apr 1829, Deed from Mordicai Jackson to Caleb Duncan,
both of Gallatin Co., KY, $175, 50 acres on Big Lick Fork of Eagle Creek, part
of James French survey of 15915a. More land records very similar to the
above are listed in 1830, 1833, and 1834. This might indicate that James had
died and the land was being sold off. In no way does this indicate that this
James French is the one we are looking for.
In 1827, ÒaÓ
James French turns up in Vermilion Co., IL, as listed in the History of
Vermilion County, Illinois, by Lottie E. Jones (see below).
Most likely the James
Elliott mentioned above was b. 1797 in NH and lived in 1860 in Vance, Vermilion
Co., IL. Samuel Beaver is listed in the 1830 census of Vermilion Co., IL; he
was aged 20-29; therefore, born ca. 1800 – all 3 men were born about the
same time.

1815-1885. Birth: Feb., 1816 Orange County Indiana,
USA Death: May 6, 1885 New Market Taylor County Iowa, USA Gideon Dougherty was
the son of Robert S. & Sarah (Tanner) Dougherty. He was the 3rd oldest son
of 10 children. He married Elizabeth Mahan 9 June 1840 in Lawrence Co.,
Indiana. He served with the Indiana Volunteers during the Mexican war 1846-47.
By Sept. 1850 the family was in Page Co., Iowa. Gideon & Elizabeth had 9
children. She outlived her husband by 35 years and died at the age of 102.

The Catherine who married
Henry Dougherty and lived in Northwest, Orange Co., IN, is NOT our Catherine
French, beforehand possibly a daughter of John and Catherine French. I found
this memorial online dedicated to the Dougherty Family at the Old Stampers Creek Cemetery in Paoli, Orange Co., IN. Catherine
was born in NC. Instead of giving her surname, they identified where she was
from, that being NC. If she were the daughter of John and Catherine French, who
lived in the same area, I'm sure they would have known that. All the other
spouses have surnames listed.

1850 census – ÒAÓ Henry Daugherty appears in the 1850
census of Owen, KY, b. ca. 1782 in MD, age 68, a wheelwright. He is living with
Malinda Daugherty, age 20, and Ann E. Daugherty, age 2.
Census Records in Indiana: We could find out the circumstances by
researching dates – such as, how old was Henry Dougherty, and did that
couple have children. If Catherine was the daughter, Henry would have been born
ca. 1770 and not 1750, plus they probably would have had children. Henry
Daugherty (spelling at that time) moved to Indiana by 1812.
In the 1850 census,
3 possibly children, all born in Kentucky and moving to Orange Co., IN, would
be Robert Dougherty b. 1790, Sarah Dougherty b. 1794, and Gabriel Dougherty b.
1809.
Henry Dougherty is listed
in the War of 1812, b. ca. 1783, age 30, on the U.S. MarshalÕs Returns of Enemy
Aliens and Prisoners of War, 1812-1815. He was in the war for 9 months. At that
time, he had a wife and 2 children.
Henry Daugherty appears on
the 1812 Land List for Orange Co., IN, prior to James, George, and Samuel
French appearing there. Henry may have been granted land after participating in
the War of 1812. The following Land Sale on 24 Apr 1820 for 38.49 acres in
Martin County, IN,
includes a co-owner of Enos Holbert. The name Enos is a
familiar name with the Samuel S. French ancestry.
February 23, 1819 -- Probate Records, Orange County, IN: Tuesday
morning February 23, 1819 Court met pursuant to adjournment. Present: Thomas Vandeveer and Sam'l Cobb, Asociate Judges. "On motion ordered that Levi Gifford,
Executor of the Last Will and Testament of Nathan Wells, deceased be charged
with $136.30 the amount of property for said Gifford sold belonging to the
aforesaid estate. Also, that he be charged with a note due to said estate on Henry Daugherty and Alexander Clark for the sum of $21.25. From:

Henry Daugherty was buried
at the Springer Cemetery, Orange Co., IN, b. 1784 and d. 2 Jun 1846 and his
wife is listed on the same stone at the bottom as Catherine, see below.
Apparently he predeceased her and her name was added later, but her name is
impossible to see in this photo. I could only trust the person who posted this
at www.findagrave.com.
But it does prove that this is not the Henry Daugherty who married Catherine
French in 1792, as he would have been only 8 years old. Perhaps the birthdate on this stone is incorrect – it reads that
he died at age 62, and the Ò6Ó is unclear. It definitely does not say Ò7Ó, but
could say Ò8Ó, therefore, died at age 82, or born in 1762. That would be a more
reasonable date. No French is buried at the Springer Cemetery.
The person who took the
photo of this stone is Robert Lane, email: rlane4@ma.rr.com. He writes to me on 15 Feb
2012: I could not find any dates on the
stone for Catherine. Given the shape of the stone, there's no absolute
guarantee on any of the information on the stone. However, I checked the
censuses. In 1840, there is a Henry Daugherty, age 50-60, living in
Southwest Township (later French Lick Township), which is
where Springer Cemetery is located. In 1850, there is a Catherine
Daugherty, apparently a widow, in French Lick Township. Her age is
consistent with the age of the oldest female in the 1840 census. All
of this is purely circumstantial, but it appears to be a pretty good match to
the head stone we have been discussing. If so, the age of 62 on the stone
matches the 1840 census. The 1850 census indicates that the name
Catherine is probably accurate, as well. Rob

Kentucky Will Book 2, written 20 June 1822; probated Oct 1823. Named wife as Nancy; daughter - Mary ALLEN; son - Robert. More daughters - Elizabeth GASSAWAY and Sarah. Daughter
Nancy had a daughter Nancy. More sons: Henry, Gandor,
Gallatin and Mark (the youngest sons). Dau: Julia FRENCH.
Sons: Joseph & James W. Uncle Joseph DOUGHERTY in Shelby County, Kentucky
and James WILLIAMS, an uncle in Jessamine County, Kentucky. Eldest sons were
Joseph & James. Executors were his wife Nancy, John GLOVER, Robinson P. BEAUCHAMP. Witnesses: John GLOVER and Lewis W.
BELL [5].
The inventory was shown on
page 311 done 20 Dec 1823 with commissioners Joseph WILLIS, John HAMILL and Wm.
GLOVER [5].
