This concludes that this family is from FFA Chart #4. However, the DNA of at least one member of this chart is shows DNA Group 4, and  the DNA for Edward French, FFA Chart #4 shows DNA Group 3. Therefore, the genealogy is this aforementioned Background is probably incorrect.

Knox County Public Library in Vincennes, IN

Ref [2] received the following information about Jonathan French, who is included in the French surname DNA project, Group 4, which also includes David French of KY, John Peter French of SC, and Jacob French of Berkeley Co., WV.

The library sent copies of 2 family group sheets for the George Hedges French - Mary "Polly" Robbins family. There isn't a date or contact name on either of these sheets, but they were located in the library's "French family" folder (Genealogy Collection, Box 41, Folder #2). Each group sheet lists the same 10 children for this couple, but in a different order. And both sheets say that the oldest child was Jonathan French, b. 1810 in Indiana.  It looks like the compiler of one of the family group sheets had found probate papers for George's wife because it says: "When her estate was settled in 1867 3 ch. were dead." It also says "George had brothers, Samuel and James".

Children listed for George Hedges FRENCH and Mary ROBBINS on the 1st group sheet are:
1. Jonathan b. ca 1810; m. Catherine Batchelor

2. Hulda b. ca 1817; m. John Pru or Pro

3. James E b. 1818; m. Eliza Allen

6. Cynthia Ann b. 30 Sept 1830; m. 1. Thomas Dickey and 2. Joseph Allen

7. Mary Jane m. John Roberts

8. William D.

9. Eliza

10. Samuel

1. Jonathan m. Catherine Batchelor

2. Eliza

3. Samuel

4. Hulda m. John Pro

5. James m. Eliza Allen

6. Mary Jane m. John Roberts

7. Sarah m. Samuel Busie

8. Cynthia Ann

9. William D.

10. Julia m. Jacob Robbins

The second group sheet also says: "John C French m Susannah was son of Samuel, George's brother.

The library sent a copy of the 1855 application for bounty land by widow Mary French (due to George H French's service in  the War of 1812). This includes 6 pages of handwritten testimony. In her testimony Mary says "that she was married to the said George H French in the County of Jefferson State of Kentucky on or about the 8th day of June 1809 by John Hite a preacher of gospel and that her name before her said marriage was Mary Robbins ..."

There was also a copy of an article (p. 290) about the James and Eliza French family of Widner Township and several of their descendants in the Knox County (Indiana) History book - 1988 edition. This article says James was born in 1816 and Eliza was born in 1824.

Descendants of Samuel French from Jan Lund

Generation No. 1 1. Samuel1 French was born 1787 in Kentucky, and died 02 September 1841. He married Julia Ann Daugherty Bef. 1824 in Probably Kentucky, daughter of Samuel Daugherty and Polly Williams. Notes for Samuel French: From an article in the newspaper when Samuel FRENCH died, it stated he was 54 years old. Since he died 2 September 1841, that would make his birth year 1787.He would have been 9 years older than Julia Ann. In the 1900 Census, Samuel's daughter, Mary Ann Bruner, stated that her mother and father were born in Kentucky. She was living in Des Moines, Iowa with a daughter at the time. I have the photocopy of the census record.

Haven't posted to this list in quite awhile so here goes.

My 4th Great Grandfather, Adam BRUNER, Jr. died in Orange County, Indiana 8 April 1849. Some of his children like Alfred BRUNER who married Mary WILSON stayed in Orange County and perhaps some others. Would there be a record of his death anywhere in Orange County that someone could check for me? Also looking for descendants of Samuel FRENCH and Julia Ann DOUGHERTY (daughter of Robert DOUGHERTY, 2nd Senator for Kentucky, of Barren County, Kentucky.

Samuel is on the tax lists for Northwest Township in about 1817. Entered land in 1836. Old homestead was still standing a couple of years ago and I have pictures and pictures of the headstones in cemetery by house.

Samuel and Julia were born "in Kentucky" per their children's census records but have been unable to find out where or the name of Samuel's parents. Samuel had a brother named George Hedges FRENCH who is buried in the same graveyard in Northwest Twp.

Any help with any of these people would be greatly appreciated.

Julia and Samuel's children were all born between 1812 and 1840

George Welborn FRENCH

George had 3 wives:

1. George W. French & Malinda Douglass, 4-14-1842

2. George W. French & Nancy Clark, 11-2- 1854

3. George W. French & Nancy Batchelor

Mary Ann FRENCH m. David Simpson BRUNER

Salina Catherine FRENCH m. James Robert ANDERSON (Believe Salina was the

only daughter who didn't move to Indiana. She was married in Barren County,

Desperately seeking information on Samuel FRENCH (1787-1841) who migrated from Kentucky to Northwest Twp., Orange County, Indiana in early 1800's. He married Julia Ann DOUGHERTY 11 October 1811....cannot locate marriage record in any book or CD which really exasperates me! Here is a short outline of this family in Orange County. Would love to hear from someone who has information about these people....."ANY" little tidbit! Do know that Samuel's brother, George Hedges FRENCH married Mary Polly ROBBINS in Louisville, Jefferson County, KY 08 June 1809. Thanks for anything! Jan Lund
