IÕve researched this line just about all I can from ancestry.com and from the internet. Additions need to come from family members or from local books or historians who havenÕt put their information online.
Another source would be for a male with the surname French of this line to take the DNA test. It is a simple test that doesnÕt involve blood. A kit is delivered to your house with special brushes for you to take cheek swabs and the tip is injected into the tiny test tubes to be returned to the lab. After the tests that you ordered are completed, in about 4 weeks, you will be notified and can log in to your personal page at the company to view your results and your DNA matches. They may match up with one of the tests shown here: http://www.familytreedna.com/public/french/default.aspx?section=yresults. The FamilyTree DNA website gives a special lower price to those with the surname French. Read about those who approve of it: http://www.familytreedna.com/testimonials.aspx. To get the discounted price for our French DNA Project group, go to http://small-stuff.com/FRENCH/DNA/ and click at the left on "Join the French DNA Project" then place your order. We suggest the 37 marker test (Y-DNA37), but if you want to start with 25, you can upgrade to a higher test at a later date if needed.
Thank you for your support. I was able to verify that my French line is from Richard French in England, and not from William French in England who raised RichardÕs son from age one – the two have entirely different DNA test results. Regards, Mara French
P.S. Although John French is not of my line, I will continue to do research on him as time permits.
Through DNA testing, we were able to research John FrenchÕs parentage back to Jacob French in West Virginia. See FFA Chart #195 for this chart going back a few more generations.
1.1 John French, b. ca. 1760 in VA, married a woman who was also born in VA. John French is in the 1880 census of Lincoln Co., KY, age 66, b. ca. 1814 in KY, a widower, and both his parents were born in KY. His parents were John and Catherine (Hedges) French. See FFA Chart #195 for this chart going back a few more generations.
Lived in Berkeley Co., WV in the 1810 census, but later moved to KY. His wife may have died by 1810 because no female near his age was living in the 1810 census. John was living with 3 younger males and 3 younger females. He had no slaves. John French is in the 1880 census of Lincoln Co., KY, age 66, b. ca. 1814 in KY, a widower, and both his parents were born in KY.
These 2 could not be correct as his parents were born in WV
ÒAÓ John French is listed in the 1790 census tax list of Lincoln Co., KY.
ÒAÓ John French is in the 1880 census of Lincoln Co., KY, age 66, b. ca. 1814 in KY, a widower, and both his parents were born in KY.
Need more research: Katherine may be Catherine Hedges who supposedly married John Philip French in Berkeley Co. VA near Tullises Branch. When John died, she might have had young children. She was remarried to Henry Daugherty in 1792. She and John French likely had sons George Hedges French (m. Polly Robbins, b. 1784 in KY, DNA Test Group 4), and Samuel French (m. Julia Dougherty - probably a niece of Henry Daugherty, b. 1782 in KY, DNA Test Group 4). These men moved to Indiana quite early. Other researchers have said that Jonathan French, b. ca. 1810, DNA Test Group 4) is the oldest son of George Hedges French and Polly Robbins.

Samuel French, b. 1810 in KY, appears in the 1880 census, age 70. 2.2* Samuel French, b. 5 May 1789 or 5 Jun 1782 in Lincoln Co., KY according to his gravestone in Orange Co., IN. He d. 21 Sep 1841 at age 52y/5m/16d and is buried in the French Family Graveyard in Northwest Township, Section 29, T3N R2W, Orange County, IN. From a newspaper article at the time Samuel FRENCH died, it stated he was 54 years old. Since he died 2 September 1841, that would make his birth year 1787. He would have been 9 years older than Julia Ann. In the 1900 Census, Samuel's daughter, Mary Ann Bruner, stated that her mother and father were born in Kentucky. She was living in Des Moines, Iowa with a daughter at the time [5]. Samuel is buried in same cemetery as brother George.

Samuel Dougherty was perhaps b. 1780 in Maryland, listed there as a seaman in the American Genealogical-Biographical Index (AGBI) – if this were him, he would have been only 16 years old when Julia was born.

Samuel is on the tax list for Northwest Township in about 1817. Entered land in 1836. Old homestead was still standing a couple of years ago and I have pictures and pictures of the headstones in cemetery by house.
Northwest Township is one of ten townships in Orange Co., IN. In the 2000 census, Northwest Township had a population of 345. French Lick was named after French traders who first settled in this region about 1800, not after the surname French.
Kentucky does not have a 1790 census. 1790 census records are available only for Connecticut, Maine, Maryland, Massachusetts, New Hampshire, New York, North Carolina, Pennsylvania, Rhode Island, South Carolina, and Vermont. Virginia is also not included, so it is very difficult to find early ancestors.

[2] Deb Skoff, skoff@comcast.net, doing research into the possible link to Chart #31. She received the following information about Jonathan French, who is included in the French surname DNA project, Group 4, which also includes David French of KY, John Peter French of SC, and Jacob French of Berkeley Co., WV.
The library sent copies of 2 family group sheets for the George Hedges French - Mary "Polly" Robbins family. There isn't a date or contact name on either of these sheets, but they were located in the library's "French family" folder (Genealogy Collection, Box 41, Folder #2). Each group sheet lists the same 10 children for this couple, but in a different order. And both sheets say that the oldest child was Jonathan French, b. 1810 in Indiana. It looks like the compiler of one of the family group sheets had found probate papers for George's wife because it says: "When her estate was settled in 1867 3 ch. were dead." It also says "George had brothers, Samuel and James".
Children listed for George Hedges FRENCH and Mary
ROBBINS on the 1st group sheet are:

3. Samuel
4. Hulda m. John Pro
5. James m. Eliza Allen
6. Mary Jane m. John Roberts
7. Sarah m. Samuel Busie
8. Cynthia Ann
9. William D.
10. Julia m. Jacob Robbins
The second group sheet also says: "John C. French m. Susannah was son of Samuel, George's brother.
The library sent a copy of the 1855 application for bounty land by widow Mary French (due to George H. French's service in the War of 1812). This includes 6 pages of handwritten testimony. In her testimony Mary says "that she was married to the said George H French in the County of Jefferson State of Kentucky on or about the 8th day of June 1809 by John Hite a preacher of gospel and that her name before her said marriage was Mary Robbins ..."
There was also a copy of an article (p. 290) about the James and Eliza French family of Widner Township and several of their descendants in the Knox County (Indiana) History book - 1988 edition. This article says James was born in 1816 and Eliza was born in 1824.

Descendants of Samuel French from Jan Lund
Generation No. 1 1. Samuel1 French was born 1787 in Kentucky, and died 02 September 1841. He married Julia Ann Daugherty Bef. 1824 in Probably Kentucky, daughter of Samuel Daugherty and Polly Williams. Notes for Samuel French: From an article in the newspaper when Samuel FRENCH died, it stated he was 54 years old. Since he died 2 September 1841, that would make his birth year 1787.He would have been 9 years older than Julia Ann. In the 1900 Census, Samuel's daughter, Mary Ann Bruner, stated that her mother and father were born in Kentucky. She was living in Des Moines, Iowa with a daughter at the time. I have the photocopy of the census record.

Samuel is on the tax lists for Northwest Township in about 1817. Entered land in 1836. Old homestead was still standing a couple of years ago and I have pictures and pictures of the headstones in cemetery by house.
Samuel and Julia were born "in Kentucky" per their children's census records but have been unable to find out where or the name of Samuel's parents. Samuel had a brother named George Hedges FRENCH who is buried in the same graveyard in Northwest Twp.
