History and Background

Jacob French (FFA Chart #195), Louisa French (FFA Chart #30), George French (FFA Chart #136), and John French (FFA Chart #129) were most likely 4 children of John French, b. 1705, who was the first of this French family in the U.S.; namely, in Pennsylvania. John French, b. 1705, immigrated to PA in 1728. For more details, see FFA Chart #195.

Who Was DavidÕs Father?

Some facts and hypotheses that IÕve gathered:

á      From the group of men with the surname French in DNA Test Group 4, and assuming David would have to come from one of those men on the list above, we could eliminate a few and work with the ones that are left. First of all, David being born ca. 1762-67, could fit in either generation 3 or 4 based on his age (see Proposed Lineage below).

á      If he fit in generation 3, he would be the oldest son of 2nd generation George French, FFA Chart #136, whose son George moved to SC. No proof has been found either way. His age does not fit into generation 4 of this line.

á      If he fit in generation 4, his grandfather would be 2nd generation Jacob, as his brother John is too young. Jacob m. Magdalena Shively and had son John in 1753 who married Catherine Hedges. The names Shively and Hedges are both used for DavidÕs descendants.

á      Based on the preceding bullet, John and David witnessed the marriage of HenryÕs daughter, Christina. John does not fit into HenryÕs direct family.

Proposed Lineage

Researchers: This is a complete hypothesis. IÕll be working on this lineage and get more sources.

David FrenchÕs sons were Philip (perhaps), George, Samuel, David, and John. DavidÕs wife, Margaret Shively, had siblings Henry, William, John, and Mary, according to her father Christian ShivelyÕs will of 1826. It is not known if David French ever lived in Lancaster Co., PA, where the Shively family lived.

Note: A different Henry French m. Abigail Anderson in Frederick Co., VA, FFA Chart #192 [4]. This Henry French is FFA Chart #192, and he belongs to DNA Group 11, not 4.

3.5 John French, FFA Chart #194, b. ca. 1750, m. Catherine Hedges. He did not remain in Berkeley Co., WV, but moved to KY. John died in Lincoln Co., KY on 21 May 1792, age ca. 40. Catherine then m2. Henry Daugherty.

4.1 David French, FFA Chart #193, b. 1766 in Berkeley Co., WV, lived in Jefferson Co., OH and Daviess Co., KY, then migrated to Ohio Co., KY, m1. Margaret Shively (a German name) on 20 Dec 1790 in Jefferson Co., KY, d. 29 Dec 1819 in Ohio Co., KY, his son David Shively, his son William Henry, his son David Shively, his son Felix Latney (DNA Test 10303).

5.1 Philip French, FFA Chart #186, b. 3 Mar 1790 in KY, m. Sarah Randall on 12 Aug 1813 – she was from Butler Co., OH, his son Warner, his son George, his son William Albert, his son Wayne Hathaway, his son Warren Wayne French (DNA Test 176015). (This has not been 100% verified)

5.2 Samuel S. (Shively?) French, b. 1797 in KY, m1. Frances (Fanny) Hudson, m2. Mary E. Bartlett.

5.3 David Shively French, b. 11 Jun 1799 in Ohio Co., KY, m. Ann Hudson.

5.4 George French, b. 1808 in Ohio Co., KY.

5.5 John French, b. 1810 in Ohio Co., KY.

First thru Third Generation

John French – DavidÕs great-grandfather, b. ca. 1705, FFA Chart #195
Jacob French – DavidÕs grandfather, b. ca. 1730, FFA Chart #195
John French – DavidÕs father, b. 1750, m. Catherine Hedges, FFA Chart #194
David French – b. 1765, FFA Chart #193

Fourth Generation

We are starting with the 4th generation in order to keep the generations consistent with DNA Test Group 4.

4.1 David French, b. ca. 1762 in Berkeley Co., WV, migrated to Ohio Co., Mercer Co., and Jefferson Co., KY, m. Margaret Shively (a German name) on 20 Dec 1790 in Jefferson Co., KY. Margaret was born ca. 1763-1767 in VA; another source says 1763 in Bethel, Lancaster Co., PA. Another source says she was b. 1775 in Fort Redstone, Fayette Co., PA.

David d. 29 Dec 1819 in Ohio Co., KY, his son was David Shively French, and his son was William Henry French, and his son was David Shively French, and his son was Felix Latney French (DNA Test 10303).

David shows up in Mercer Co., KY where he was on the taxes on 15 Aug 1789 and witnessed the marriage of Christina French to Bennett Bull. Christina was the daughter of Henry French, FFA Chart #31.

Bond: Christina m. 16 Aug 1789 Bennett (Beneo) Bull in Mercer Co., KY by J. Bailey, Minister with John French as surety [24], witnessed by David French.

Bennett Bull Sr. was b. 9 Jan 1768 in Baltimore, Maryland, d. 25 Jan 1854. Bennett Bull appears in the 1810 census of Mercer Co., KY with a family of 8.

My interpretation of the relationship of these Frenches is as follow: Henry was DavidÕs uncle, the younger brother of DavidÕs father John. David was b. ca. 1762, and Christina was b. ca. 1771, so they were quite close in age. It is most likely that John French was ChristinaÕs uncle, in other words, her fatherÕs brother, which also indicates that John was DavidÕs father. This would indicate that David French was ChristinaÕs cousin. Another mention about this wedding states that John French was the Bondsman and the witnesses were David French and Peter Widenor.

The situation arises as to why Christina did not have her father, Henry French, as surety, a bondsman, or a witness to her marriage to Bennett Bull? Henry was still alive on 15 Aug 1788, and they all were in Mercer Co., KY. This proves that David French was in the exact same area in Mercer Co., KY, as Henry was in 1789. Henry also had land in Jefferson Co., KY; however, all his children were born in Mercer Co.

Marriage

December 20, 1790 Margaret Shively, wed David French. The Jefferson County, Kentucky wedding bond has "David French (X)" The bondsman for the license was Peter Letherman and permission for Margaret to marry was given by "her father Jacob." Descendants have long assumed this was a clerkÕs or David FrenchÕs error, because her father by family tradition is Christian Shively, and shortly before her death, the October 3, 1866 Owensboro Monitor says her father was "Colonel Shively" of Jefferson County, which is certainly a reference to Christian, not Jacob. Christian lived in Jefferson County for many years, owning land, lending money. Jacob Shively, on the other hand, seemed to repeatedly sell his land there to someone for enough money to get by, and then getting permission from them to continue living on the land.

Margaret was the dau. of Christian Shively [1] and Margaret Washbaugh or Mary Bashore or Brasheres/Brashears [2]. She was buried in Ohio Co., KY in 1866 [2], age 88, on a farm owned in 1934 by Mr. R. J. Hewett. The French Cemetery on Pleasant Ridge, in Ohio Co., KY, has no marker for her [2].

Census

1790 Census: In the reconstructed 1790 census of Kentucky Henry French, FFA Chart #31, is listed in Jefferson County on the date 4/4/1789, definitely indicating that Henry was head of household and born before 1770 and probably related to David French as they both lived in Jefferson County.

David is listed in the reconstructed 1790 census of KY as living in Jefferson Co. on 4 Apr 1789. Only 3 other Frenches are listed in this KY 1790 census: Benjamin French (Woodford Co., KY), William French (Fayette Co., KY), and John French (Lincoln Co., KY). 1790 Kentucky Map (can be enlarged over 200%). Woodford Co. is just west of Fayette Co., and Lincoln Co. is a couple of counties further south.

1800 Census of Jefferson Co., KY. David was living in Jefferson Co., KY, by 1796. He was living partly with his uncle Henry who was the brother of DavidÕs father John, in Mercer Co., but he was also the head of household in the 1810 census in Jefferson Co., KY, and lived next to his cousin HenryÕs second home. FFA Chart #193 and #136 are one DNA mutation different.

1810 census: I checked the transcription by ancestry.com of the 1810 census of David in Jefferson Co., KY, and it clearly says French, not Frence, so that is a warning to all of us to compare the original with the transcript. The Henry family of Henry French in Mercer Co. and in Jefferson Co. both match up as far as his children go, so apparently he did own land in both places. He had a slave in Mercer County but not in Jefferson County. A slave in Jefferson County was named Henry French. In Mercer there is one added adult over the age of 45 besides Henry, which must be David, as in Jefferson, David and Henry had their individual households and are listed separately.

1820 census: The surname French first appears in the 1820 census of Ohio Co. showing 2 French families:

1. Edmund French living with his wife, both between 16-25 years of age, perhaps not of this line.

2. Margaret French (her husband David had died the year before). This census seems to be quite detailed and is the best early record we have of all Margaret and DavidÕs children with their ages, plus 3 slaves.

Daughter Elizabeth was already married in 1813 and she appears not to be listed in the 1820 census, but could be listed with her husband; all the other 8 children appear in the 1820 census except oldest daughter Margaret Ann.

(supposed) Son Philip was 30, married, and living in Butler Co., OH
Son Samuel was 23 and not married until 1821.
Son David was 21 and married at the end of 1820.
Daughter Margaret Ann was not living at home.
Sarah Jane was 15 and not married until 1824.
Martha Ann was 12 and not married until 1830.
John was 10.
Mary was 7.
George was 6.

The 1830 census of Daviess Co., KY, Margaret was living with a family of 3 plus 2 slaves. One slave was a male, born 1807 to 1820 (could have been George or Isaac). The other was a female born between the same years. Could this be Caroline?

The 1840 census of Ohio Co., KY, Margaret was living with a family of 2 plus 2 slaves. One slave was a male and one was a female, both born between 1805 and 1816 (could be George and Caroline?). The two white people were John, born 1800-1810, and Margaret who was aged 60-69 and therefore born 1770 to 1780. She was born 1763. Margaret was living with a male between ages 30 and 40, and that she was between the ages of 60 and 70; therefore, born at the earliest in 1770. The male living with her was born between 1800-1810.

The 1850 census of Ohio Co., KY says Margaret was b. ca. 1767 in Virginia, age 83, living with John French, her son, age 40, a farmer. They had no slaves. They were living next to the Westerfield family, her son-in-law.

The 1860 census of Bells, Ohio Co., KY, shows John, age 49, was living with his mother Margaret, age 97, and the Dodson and Boyd families. Margaret died in 1866. MargaretÕs great-grandson was Henry H. French who was born in 1864 just before Margaret died. He m. Annie, who had daughter Leotia, who m. Harlan H. Boyd. But other than this connection, we have no data on any relationship between the French, Dodson, and Boyd families. . This census states that Margaret was b. ca. 1763 in VA. She is living with her son John French. David and Margaret ShivelyÕs 9 children lived in Floyd Co., IN; New Albany, Harrison Co., IN; and Ohio Co., KY.

1870 census. Margaret is not listed in the 1870 census.

Slaves

The 1880 census shows a Harry French, b. ca. 1772 in Virginia, living in Shardine, Jefferson Co., KY. He is widowed and black. He is listed as 108 years old, living with many other people probably in a boarding house. No other names fit this family. It states he cannot read or write and that both his parents were born in VA. The original appears to say 108. The people listed next to him donÕt seem to have any characteristic indicating they belong together. Shardine is just outside Louisville where the DNA Test Group 4 lived. You can search for an 1879 map online of Shardine and see the name Shively. The Shively area of Louisville, KY, is quite noteworthy. See another 1879 map of Shiveley just SW of Louisville. Also, see the 1879 Atlas of Jefferson and Oldham Counties.

Land Deeds and Tax Records

January 1783 -- Petition To Congress For A New State. David French, George French, Richard Clark, John Clark, Basil Clark and hundreds of other inhabitants of the west side of the Laurel Hill Mountains, sent a petition to the President of the Congress asking for a new state to be created from their area and an end to the dispute over the land between Pennsylvania and Virginia. The original document is on file at the National Archives and is listed as a letter from David French and George French inhabitants of the west side of the Laurel Hill Mountains, PA, to the President of Congress, January, 1783. The reference to this from an index at the Archives is: 8 p M247, R62, i48, p. 251. Why the book listed this as from David and George French in the index is unknown, since their names are no more prominent in position or size than any other of the 1,800+ signatories.

. . . Repetitious names are in the original document. There are two David Frenches listed or one David French twice. There was another David French who had bought land in the West Virginia area, and he was the son of Matthew French and demonstrably not the David of Virginia. David was not listed on Lincoln County, Virginia tax records. In 1786, Madison and Mercer County were formed from Lincoln County. There was a William French in Madison County. . .

David French shows up in Mercer County, where he was on the taxes and on 15 August 1789 witnessed the marriage of Christina French to Bennett Bull. Christina was listed as the daughter of Henry French. Also in Mercer County were Samuel French and Henry French. Henry French's appraisement and inventory there in 1824/1825 documents his family, and did not include David.

In 1789, David French bought 100 acres of land in Jefferson County. A Henry French had bought a lot in Louisville in 1783.

22 April 1794, David French was in Mercer County where he certified that Elizabeth McCoy was of age when she married James Campbell.

David French was listed as "removed to Jefferson" on the 1796 Mercer County taxes, well after he had married Peggy Shively in Jefferson in 1790.

The Estate of David French Settlement

Fifth Generation

Children of David and Margaret (Shively) French, 1.1

Four siblings of this French family (Samuel, David, George, and Margaret) married Hudson siblings from Virginia.

5.1 Philip French, b. ca. 1790, see FFA Chart #186. (not 100% sure he belongs here)

5.2 Elizabeth French, b. ca. 1791, m. in 1813. The 1810 census of Jefferson Co., KY, lists Elizabeth as born between 1785-1794.

Ref [15] states: You referred to David French as being the "stepfather" of Elizabeth French who married Stephen Jones in 1813 in Jefferson Co. KY. Stephen Jones was born in 1785 in Wales. According to JEFFERSON COUNTY VIRGINIA - KENTUCKY EARLY MARRIAGES book 1 1781 - July 1826 David was her stepfather and he gave his consent in person. The abbreviation "sd" stands for "said", not for "stepdaughter". There is no marriage date but the License & Bond were taken on 3-2-1813 and they were married by John Todd. David French posted the bond and Edward Tyler Jr. was the witness. On page 12 of this same book David French (made his mark X) married Margaret Shively. The bond was by Peter Letherman. The bonding date was 12-20-1790. There is no marriage date or Minister's name.

Another account is as follows: Elizabeth French is listed as a daughter in many documents, but David French was present to give consent for her to marry Stephen Jones, and at that time said she was a stepdaughter, Jefferson County Virginia-Kentucky Marriages Book 1. The marriage license was March 2, 1813 witnessed by Edward Tyler, Jr.

An 1884 Ohio County, KY, Court case of D. H. French versus George Samuels et. al. lists among Elizabeth's heirs Ellen Newman, Margaret Jones wife of William Shively, Sarah Lewis, Elizabeth Crumm, Susan Norton, George Jones and Henry Jones. ElizabethÕs husband, Stephen Jones, was a widower, age 75, by the 1860 census of Jefferson Co., KY, living with his children Eliza and George.

Elizabeth had 7 children, born after 1813: Ellen Jones (married Newman), Margaret Jones (married William Shively), Sarah Jones (married Lewis), Eliza Jones (married Crumm), Susan Jones (married Norton), George Jones, and Henry Jones [20]. We know the most about Sarah Jones, b. 1824 in KY, lived in Shardine, Jefferson Co., KY, in the 1880 census, widowed, and the census states that SarahÕs father was born in Wales and her mother in Kentucky. In the 1850 census of Jefferson Co., KY, Sarah was 27 years old, married to James M. Lewis, and had 2 children. By the 1860 census of Jefferson Co., KY, she was married to James M. Lewis and had 5 children. By the 1870 census of Shively, Jefferson Co., KY, she was married to James with 5 children. By the 1880 census, she was widowed and living with 2 of her children. This 1880 census gives valuable insight as to her parents. Then, likewise, valuable insight can be learned from the 1880 census record of Susan E. Jones, b. 1831 in KY, was living in Morganfield, Union Co., KY in the 1880 census, married to Stephen J. Norton with 4 children. She also states that her father was born in Wales and her mother in Kentucky.

Edward Tyler Jr. was b. ca. 1779 in Jefferson Co., KY. Peter Letherman is on the KY Early Census Index of Jefferson Co., KY in 1789.

5.3* Samuel S. (perhaps Shively or Seymour) French, b. 1797 in KY [10], d. 27 Sep 1867 in Ohio Co., KY. He m. Frances "Fanny" Hudson who was b. 12 Jul 1806, d. 24 Dec 1854. (She is buried in Hudson Cemetery in Ohio Co. per Gerry Bell). Their Ohio County, KY marriage bond 29 August 1821 between Samuel French and Thomas Hudson for the marriage of Samuel French and Fanny Hudson. Thomas Hudson her father gave consent.

Census

In the 1820 census of Ohio Co., KY, the oldest son listed was between 18-25 years of age, or born 1795-1802. Samuel m1. Frances (Fanny) Hudson on 29 Aug 1821 in Ohio Co., KY [2], the dau. of Thomas Hudson. Samuel and Frances had 7 children. Frances was born 12 Jul 1806 in VA, d. 4 Dec 1854 in Ohio Co., KY and is buried in the Hudson Cemetery in Ohio Co., KY [10]. Samuel m2. Mary E. Bartlett on 12 Oct 1857 in Daviess Co., OH. She was b. ca. 1820, 23 years younger than Samuel. They had daughter Martha who m. Hoylan.

Samuel is listed in the 1830 census of Ohio Co., KY.

Samuel French was born 1790 to 1800 per 1840 census records.

The 1850 census of District 2, Ohio Co., KY, says Frances was b. ca. 1802 in VA. Also living with him in 1850 are David French, 27; Thomas French, 18; Julaann French, 14; Samuel French, 10; William J. French, 4; and Adam Cain, 23.

Samuel is listed in the 1860 census of Bells, Ohio Co., KY, age 62, living with Mary E. French, b. 1821 in KY; Samuel French, b. 1842 in KY; Nancy French, b. 1822 in KY (wife of SamuelÕs son David); Mary E. French, b. 1851 in KY; Sallie French, b. 1855 in KY; Laurena French, b. 1858 in KY; and William J. French, b. 1847 in KY. All of SamuelÕs grandchildren from his son David lived with them: William J., Mary E., Sallie, and Laurena – David had died just before the 1860 census was taken.

In the 1870 census of Bells, Ohio Co., KY, Samuel was living with Mary C. French, 49; Frances J. French, 11; Martha J. French, 8; John French, 59; Julia Cooper, 18; and Thomas Richard, 15.

The 1880 census of Buford, Ohio Co., KY, lists Mary E. French as the mother-in-law of the Hoylan family (Martha J., Elizabeth E., Mary F.) and also living with William T. French, age 16, b. 1864, the son of SamuelÕs son, Samuel.

5.4* David Shively French, b.11 Jun 1799 in Ohio Co., KY. A descendant of David took the DNA test for DNA Test Gp 4 (DNA Test 10303). David m1. Rebecca Sturman Hudson in on 4 Feb 1816 in Knox Co., Vincennes, IN. She was the daughter of Thomas Humphrey Sturman and Mary Lewis. See Sturman. David m2. Ann Hudson on 20 Dec 1820 in Ohio Co., KY. She was b. 6 Nov 1802 in VA and d. 17 Nov 1884 in Ohio Co., KY, per Gerry Bell, and is buried at the French Cemetery on Pleasant Ridge in Ohio Co., KY. David d. 27 Sep 1867.

Census

In the 1820 census of Ohio Co., KY, the second to the oldest son listed was between 18-25 years of age, or born 1795-1802. David m. Ann Hudson on 20 Dec 1820 in Ohio Co., KY, d. 27 Sep 1867 in Daviess Co., KY, buried at the French Cemetery in Daviess Co., KY [2]. Brothers Samuel and David married Hudson sisters. Ann was b. 6 Nov 1802 in VA, d. 17 Nov 1884 in Ohio Co., KY, and is buried at the French cemetery, Pleasant Ridge, Ohio Co., KY. David is buried at the French cemetery, Pleasant Ridge, Ohio Co., KY.

David is listed in the 1830 census of Ohio Co., KY, as age between 20 and 30.

In the 1860 census of Bells, Ohio Co., KY, David is 59 and living with Ann, 58, and 4 of his children: Mary E., Sarah, Warner, and David H.   It is very interesting that the name Warner appears here, as Philip French named his oldest son Warner. DavidÕs son Warner is listed in both the 1850 and 1860 census as Warner L. which might stand for Lewis.

In the 1880 census of Buford, Ohio Co., KY, Ann is 77, b. ca. 1803 in VA, widowed, living with her family:

1880 census of Buford, Ohio Co., KY

Census

In the 1820 census of Ohio Co., KY, the youngest son listed was between 10-15 years of age, or born 1805-1810. George m. 6 Dec 1827 to Sally Hudson, d. 14 Jan 1842 (age ca. 34) in Ohio Co., KY [2]. Sally was b. 3 Jan 1816 in Pulaski Co., KY, the dau. of Daniel Hudson and Mary (Polly) Luster. She d. 8 Jan 1861 in Warren Co., Iowa.

By the 1830 census of Bourbon, Kentucky, only George and his wife are listed. This entry seems correct because George would have been too young to have 5 children by 1830.

This establishes the county of Bourbon, Kentucky. It is the remnant of what was previously a much larger Bourbon County, established as part of Virginia in 1785, and comprised what is now 34 modern Kentucky counties. It is best known for its historical association with bourbon whiskey, although no bourbon whiskey is currently made or sold within the current borders of Bourbon County. Bourbon County was formed on 17 Oct 1785 from sections of Fayette Co., VA. Bourbon became part of the new state of Kentucky when it was created in 1792. In 1830 when George lived in Bourbon County, it had a population of 18,436, and by 1840 it lost population and had only 14,478. Today (2010) it has not gained much population, as it is only 19,985. Paris, the capital, was first settled in 1775, having originally been known as Hopewell, Virginia.

By the 1840 census of Kentucky, there were 3 men named George: the one previously mention in Hardin which we have ruled out, and one in Ohio Co., and one in Mercer Co. By 1840, George and his wife were about 26 years old. The George in Ohio was over 30 years of age showing he was not this George, but he could have very well been of this family because this family also lived in Ohio Co. The George in Mercer Co. was between 20-29 years of age, so I would assume this one was him. Also in his household were two females under 5, no male children, and no slaves. George was employed in agriculture, meaning, he was a farmer.

Their 5 children were living with the Douglas family in the 1850 census after their father had died.

Petition To Congress For A New State

22 April 1794, David French was in Mercer County where he certified that Elizabeth McCoy was of age when she married James Campbell.

In 1789, David French bought 100 acres of land in Jefferson County. A Henry French had bought a lot in Louisville in 1783.

David French was listed as "removed to Jefferson" on the 1796 Mercer County taxes, well after he had married Peggy Shively in Jefferson in 1790. No second David French appeared in Jefferson County during this period.

Dear Mrs. Bowman:

David French and Margaret Shively were my great-great grandparents. You will find their marriage recorded in Jefferson County under date of December 20, 1790. David French died about 1818. Margaret French lived until about 1870 or later. Mr. John C. Riley of Hartford, who is 85 years of age, remembers her very well. Mr. Robert Bell of Whitesville, Ky. is one of her grandsons. He remembers her very well. A Mr. French living near Buford in Ohio County, Ky. knows where she is buried. He says she is buried in what is known as the French burying ground over on a farm now owned by Mr. R. J. Hewett.

Their marriage record indicates that she was the daughter of Jacob Shively. But I am convinced in my own mind that thru oversight of the clerk in making the record of the marriage license, he either confused the name of her father with the name of her brother or else confused the name of her father with the name of David Frenchs father. There was a Jacob French in Jefferson County at that time according to some records I have observed but which records I do not at this moment recall. I think Margaret had a brother Jacob Shively.

Christian Shivelys will is recorded in Will Book No. I at Louisville. It refers to his daughter Margaret French. It refers to other children and grand-children whom some of the French descendents now living still remember as their Shively relations. I, therefore, think it is certain that Margaret French was the daughter of Christian Shively and that the referred to Jacob Shively as her father was an error of the clerk.

The whole marriage record presents a clerical error, in that it recites David Frenchs name as that of David Fink or Finck. But it is in reality the record of the marriage of David French and Margaret Shively, as wills, deeds and the memory of persons living conclusively show thru their recollections of the older relatives and their children.

The children of David and Margaret French were:
David French, who married Ann Hudson, December 20, 1820
George French, who married Sallie Hudson, December 3, 1827
Margaret French, who married William Hudson, August 20, 1821
Samuel French, who married Fannie Hudson, August 29, 1821
Sarah French, who married James Westerfield, Jun 9, 1824
Martha French, who married Robert Moseley, November 8, 1830
(These were my great-grandparents)

I do no recall the name of the daughter who married Thomas Bell.

These are in addition to Elizabeth Jones. There was one whose marriage record is on file at Hardinsburg. I once found the record and made a reference to it but do not have the reference before me.

In Perrins History of Kentucky, page 1000, there is a sketch of William Henry Shively, who is remembered by Robert Bell of Whitesville, and the Mr. French who lives near Buford. His sketch says he is a grandson of Christian Shively.

Margaret French lived to be about 88 years of age. He remembers that when he was 9 years of age he frequently rode behind her on horseback. At that time she could ride up to a gate, jump down out of the sidesaddle, open the gate, and after leading the horse thru, lead him to a stump and from there jump back into the sidesaddle as spry as a cat.

I have never traced the Revolutionary record of Christian Shively because of the slight uncertainty which has appeared because of the marriage record as to the identity of her father. I have never known the father of David French but at times have been led to surmise that it was Jacob French. Therefore, my membership in the S.A.R. is not thru descent of either the Shively or French ancestor.
