List of Men in 1810 with the Surname French

The purpose of this web page is to list French men in 1810 whom we believe all belong to DNA Test Group 4. The 1810 census shows 732 men named French (or variations thereof).

á    John Franch (French), Greenville, SC 11

á    Geo Franck (French), Berkeley, VA 10

á    Jacob Franck (French), Berkeley, VA 10

á    Henry French, Berkeley, VA 5

á    John Philip French, Berkeley, WV 7

á    George French, Greenville, SC 9

á    Henry French, Jefferson, KY 7

á    Henry French, Mercer, KY 9 (same person as above, but adding David French [below] and a slave) David and Henry lived in both Mercer and Jefferson Counties, probably not as father and son or as brothers). Henry was counted twice in the 1810 census.

á    David French, Jefferson, KY 12 -- b. ca. 1765, is listed in the reconstructed 1790 census in Jefferson Co., KY, and dies by 1820. He would be listed with his children in 1810, the 2 oldest being Samuel S. French and David S. French, both born just before 1800 and in Ohio Co., KY. He could be living with another French family, but who? We donŐt know who his father was. He is listed, however, in the reconstructed 1790 census of Kentucky where he is listed in Jefferson County on the date 4/4/1789, definitely indicating that he was head of household and born before 1770.

á    Jonathan French, Botetourt, VA 5

á    John French, Botetourt, VA 8

á    Peter French, Botetourt, VA 10

á    Wm (William) French, Botetourt, VA 13 – FFA Chart #110. After 1810 William moved his family to Shelby Co., KY, and died there in 1851. This line could someday be in DNA Test Group 4. Not researched.

á    William French, Madison Co., KY 3 – FFA Chart #151 who may be related to DNA Test Group 4. Not researched.

á    Isaac French, Canada, b. 1765 who would be about 45 years old in 1810, died before 1820. His son Peter French was born ca. 1790 and may have married by 1810, but we cannot find him either. He most likely would have been in Chatham, Ontario, Canada, in 1810. However, Peter resided in Detroit during the War of 1812. We donŐt know who his father was. Not in the U.S. 1810 census.

á    Philip French, b. 3 Mar 1790, was not yet married by 1810. He could have lived in Hardy Co., VA or in Liberty, Butler Co., OH where he turns up in the 1820 census. He could be living with another French family, but who? We donŐt know who his father was. Cannot find in the U.S. 1810 census.

Ancestral Lineage of DNA Test Group 4 with FFA Chart Numbers

I started naming these families by giving them chart numbers long long long before we were ever able to construct their ancestral lineage through DNA. Therefore, the chart numbers donŐt always coincide with one family, but I plan to leave it the way it is due to the amount of time and energy it would take to reshuffle everything.

1. John French, b. 1705 in England, m. Mary ca. 1720 in Franklin Co., PA, included in FFA Chart #195. John French had 4 children: George, Jacob, Louisa, and John. Louisa and John are spoken for, but George and Jacob need straightening out.

2.1 George French, b. 1720-1730 in PA, m. ca. 1745, d. 1762 in WV. FFA Chart #195.

3.1 George P. French Jr., b. ca. 1750, resided in Greenville, SC, died 1820 in TN. FFA Chart #136.

4.1 John Peter French, b. ca. 1778, m. Anna Stone, Greenville, SC. FFA Chart #136.

4.2 Jacob French, b. 1785 in Greenville, SC.

4.3 James French, b. 1789 in Greenville, SC.

       4.4 George P. French, b. 1790 in Greenville, SC.

4.5 Aaron French, b. 1799 in Greenville, SC.

3.2 Henry French, b. ca. 1755, m. Catherine Heatrone, d. in Washington, Greene Co., TN. FFA Chart #10. This chart and FFA Chart #136 above are only one mutation off from each other.

       4.1 Henry French Jr., b. ca. 1778.

       4.2 John Peter French, b. 1793.

4.3 William Lewis French, b. 1795, Blount, Green Co., TN.

       4.4 Stephen C. French, b. 1810.

3.3 John (called Peter) French, b. ca. 1755. Lived at Cherokee Creek, Washington Co., TN in 1801. Unknown?

3.4 David French, b. ca. 1762? Where does he belong? Perhaps born near fatherŐs death and his name was not in a will. FFA Chart #193. David owned 6 acres of land in VA in 1789 called Rockey Stripe, which he probably sold and moved immediately that year to Jefferson Co., KY. Who else moved on KY in that year? In the 1810 census, he was living partly with his cousin Henry who was the son of DavidŐs uncle Jacob, in Mercer Co., but he was also the head of household in the 1810 census of Jefferson Co., KY, and lived next to his cousin HenryŐs second home. FFA Chart #193 and #136 are one mutation different. He is listed, however, in the reconstructed 1790 census of Kentucky where he is listed in Jefferson County on the date 4/4/1789, definitely indicating that he was head of household and born before 1770.

4.1 Samuel S. French, b. 1797 in Ohio Co., KY.

4.2 David S. French, b. 1799 in Ohio Co., KY.

2.2 Jacob French, b. ca. 1730 in Berkeley Co., WV, d. 1788 in WV, m. Magdalena Shively. FFA Chart #195. (only these 4 sons are mentioned in his will – no David)

3.1 George French, b. ca. 1750 in VA, d. 1830 in Berkeley Co., WV, m. Mary Savely or Shively. FFA Chart #195.

4.1 John French, b. after 1786, had children Jacob, George, Mary Ann French.

       4.2 Henry French, b. after 1795.
