8.4 Charles Franklin Elburn, b. 1923, d. 18 Dec 1944 in The Philippines during WWII. He was a Seaman, First Class, U.S.S. Monaghan (DD-354), U.S. Navy during WWII. He died in the ÒLine of DutyÓ in a Non-Battle related incident when the Monaghan sunk during a typhoon in the Pacific during the war. The U.S.S. Spence and U.S.S. Hull also sank during this typhoon. He was buried at the Manila American Cemetery and Memorial in Manila, Metro Manila, National Capital, Philippines, listed on the tablet of the missing.

Charles F. is listed in the 1930 census of Edesville, Kent Co., MD, living with his parents.

In the 1940 census, he was living on East Neck Island Road in Kent Co., MD. He was killed during WWII.

The USS Monaghan (DD-354), was the last ship built of the Farragut class destroyers.

 

8.5* Edmund H. Elburn Sr., b. 15 May 1924. Edmund H. is listed in the 1930 census of Edesville, Kent Co., MD, living with his parents. In the 1940 census, he was living on East Neck Island Road in Kent Co., MD. He enlisted in WWII on 15 Mar 1943 in Baltimore as a Private, with 2 years of high school, single, without dependents. He lived in Havre de Grace, MD, where he passed away on 12 Oct 2012 at the Upper Chesapeake Medical Center in Bel Air, MD. He was 88. He was buried at the Harford Memorial Gardens in Aberdeen, Harford Co., MD, with his wife Phyllis Audrey Mench. She was b. 22 Oct 1928 in MD, d. 1 Dec 1998, Havre De Grace, Harford, MD. They had one son, Edmond.

HAVRE DE GRACE - Edmond H. Elburn, of Havre de Grace, passed on Oct. 12, 2012 at the Upper Chesapeake Medical Center in Bel Air. He was 88. He was the loving husband of the late Phyllis A. Elburn.

Mr. Elburn was born in Rock Hall to the late George Franklin and Catherine Coleman Elburn. He was the devoted father to Edmond H. Elburn Jr. and his wife, Rose Mary. He was the adoring grandfather to Edmond T. Elburn. Mr. Elburn is survived by his sister, Betty Crouch, and sisters-in-law Mary Ann Spencer, Thelma Bigelow and Betty Bigelow. He was predeceased by his brother, Charles Elburn; brothers-in-law Allan Crouch and Neal Gardner; and sister-in-law Joyce Gardner.

Mr. Elburn was a U.S. Army veteran, having served in World War II. He retired from Aberdeen Proving Ground after 35 years of civil service. He was a member of the Rock Hall American Legion Post No. 228. He enjoyed being outdoors, working in his garden, fixing things and helping others in need. He worked around the Harford County area as a handyman, fixing up homes and painting, since his retirement. He will be greatly missed by his neighbors and friends whom he has helped over the years.

A viewing will be held from 5 to 7 p.m. Wednesday, Oct. 17 (today) at the Zellman Funeral Home P.A., 123 S. Washington St., Havre de Grace. A funeral service will be held at noon Thursday, Oct. 18 at the Harford Memorial Garden Chapel, 3839 Aldino Road, Aberdeen. Officiating will be Pastor Edward Heydt.

8.6 Elizabeth Jane Elburn, b. ca. 1931, m. Walter Allen Crouch in 1951. He was b. 25 Jul 1929, St. GeorgeÕs, DE, d. 5 Dec 2010 in Rock Hall, Kent, MD. They had 2 sons: Graham F. Crouch and Charles Allen Crouch.

John Henry Boulter on 28 Sep 1929 in Kent, MD. He was b. 1 Oct 1903 in Rock Hall, Kent, MD, and d. 27 Jul 1992 in Rock Hall, Kent, MD. They had a large family.

Carroll m1. Laura Catherine Creeden in 1937 in Kent, MD, as they are listed in the 1940 census and whom he divorced in Jun 1956 in St. Johns, Florida. Laura was b. 5 Dec 1912 in Wilmington, New Castle, DE, and d. 4 Sep 1987 in Chestertown, Kent, MD. His 4 children were from his first wife.

Carroll m2. Mary Elizabeth ÒBethÓ Kimball, probably after 1956. She was b. 24 Aug 1907 in Connecticut, d. 3 Sep 1983 in Broward, FL. Both Carroll and Mary are buried at the Wesley Chapel Cemetery in Rock Hall, Kent Co., MD. CarrollÕs social security card was issued in the state of New Jersey. He was a yacht captain for the Dupont Family in Delaware. No children.

Chronology

In the 1900 census of Edesville, Kent, MD, Carroll was 11 (actually he would have been 14), and he was living with his widowed father and with his fatherÕs brother and his family.

In the 1910 census of Edesville, Kent, MD, Carroll was 21 and living with his aunt Henrietta E., age 40.

In the 1920 census of Rock Hall, Kent, MD, Carroll was living with his mother, Henrietta Elizabeth, age 50 and his sister Francis.

In the 1930 census – cannot find.

In the 1940 census of Galena, Kent Co., MD, Carroll was an engineer living with his wife Laura and their 1-year old daughter Elizabeth. He completed his 4th year of High School.

16 May 1945 – Carroll enlisted in WWII as a Private in the Army in Baltimore, MD. At this time he was married.

1970 City Directory of Pompano Beach, Florida, Carroll was living with his wife Mary E., and was a yacht captain living at 330 NE 25th Ave.

1984 City Directory of Pompano Beach, Florida, Carroll was living at 1330 NE PO Ave 26.

1987 City Directory of Pompano Beach, Florida, Carrol was living at 330 S. Cypress Rd., Apt. 605.

She m. Robert H. Ayres Sr. and had 2 children: Ann Ayers and Robert H. Ayers Jr. Her husband was b. in 1909 and d. 25 Aug 1974 in Fairlee, Kent, MD.

8.10* William Arthur Elburn, b. 1 May 1915 in Baltimore, MD, married Margaret Bachelor in 1936 in Baltimore. In the 1930 census of Baltimore, he was living with his parents and sister Anna. He d. 2 Nov 2003 at 88 years old in Baltimore, MD. He last lived in Reisterstown, Baltimore Co., MD. Margaret B. Elburn was b. 1 Oct 1911, d. 29 Oct 2001 at 90 years old. Also mentioned in his obituary were Stewart Elburn, Margaret Batchelor, Margaret Egolf Linda, Wilton A. Elburn, and Herbert Elburn. He was the owner of an auto repair shop called ElburnÕs Garage in the 4500 block of Falls Road that he took over from his father and kept until he retired in 1973. The following article was published in The Baltimore Sun, November 5, 2003:

William Arthur Elburn, former owner and operator of a North Baltimore auto repair shop and filling station, died of a stroke Sunday at Sinai Hospital. The Reisterstown resident was 88.

Mr. Elburn was born in Baltimore, raised in Hampden and graduated in 1933 from Forest Park High School.

Then he began working with his father, Herbert Elburn, who a year earlier had established Elburn's Garage in the 4500 block of Falls Road. The younger Mr. Elburn managed the business until retiring in 1973, turning it over to his two sons and daughter, who operated it until closing in 1987. The garage was torn down and replaced by a strip mall.

Mr. Elburn was fond of traveling by ship with his wife, the former Margaret Batchelor, and they were aboard the Queen Elizabeth II during its maiden voyage in 1969. They also enjoyed spending winters at Clearwater Beach, Fla.

Mr. Elburn was a member of Woodberry United Methodist Church in Mount Washington, where he played the organ for many years.

His wife of 65 years died in 2001.

Services will be held at 11:30 a.m. today at Eline Funeral Home, 11824 Reisterstown Road in Reisterstown.

Mr. Elburn is survived by his twin sons, Wilton A. Elburn of Reisterstown and Stewart Elburn of Parkville; six grandchildren; and eight great-grandchildren. His daughter, Margaret Linda Egolf, died in 1991.

8.11 Mary Lou Elburn, b. 3 Jun 1935 in Chestertown, Kent Co., MD, died 4 Jun 1935 in Kingstown, Queen AnneÕs Co., MD. Mary Lou was the first born child of William "Walter" Elburn and Jessie Marie Brooks. Cemetery records indicate that she is buried in the Elburn plot, but her tombstone no longer stands and probing did not locate her grave.

He lived at 1721 Duhamel Corner Rd., Sudlersville, MD 21668-1265 in 1993. He m. Betty Lucille Winterstein on 30 Apr 1960 and d. 21 Jan.

Harriett was b. 13 Feb 1947, the day after Carl was born. Carl was in the U.S. Air Force as a Computer Operator, stationed in Stuttgart, Germany, 1974-1978. Becky was b. 13 Feb 1947 in Chestertown, Kent, MD.

Bill was b. 14 Sep 1951 in Rich Creek, Giles, VA to parents Mike Leopal Farley and Genevieve Trail. They have son Trail Ringgold Farley, b. 23 Mar 1982 in Fredericksburg, VA. William was b. 14 Sep 1951 in Giles, Rich Creek, VA, the son of Mike Leopal Farley and Genevieve Trail. Joan was raised across the Chester River in Kingstown, Queen AnneÕs Co., MD.
