5.1* William Samuel Elburn, b. 6 Jun 1838 in Edesville/Piney Neck, Rock Hall, Kent Co., MD, d. 7 Feb 1913 in Chestertown, Kent Co., MD. He m. Mary Elizabeth Deford in 14 Jun 1860 in Chestertown, Kent, MD. She was b. Dec 1838 in Kent Co., MD, the dau. of James DeFord and Elizabeth Rollinson. Mary d. 5 Aug 1907. Both William and Mary are buried at the Chester Cemetery, Chestertown, Kent Co., MD. William was probably named ÒWilliamÓ after his motherÕs father William Henry Ashley, and ÒSamuelÓ after his grandfather. William became an orphan in 1850 at age 12.

6 Jun 1838 – William Samuel Elburn was born in Kent, MD.
1840 census – this census is very important in determining vital information about William. The year before his grandfather Samuel Elburn died (1839), and WilliamÕs parents were married 4 Jan 1837, and William was born 6 Jun 1838; therefore, William should be age 2 in this census, but he and his parents cannot be found. WilliamÕs grandmother, Millicent Elburn, was still living in 1840 as she died on 20 May 1848. In the 1840 census, Millicent Elburn was living with her younger sons Edward and William, and eldest son Thomas is not listed.
1850 census -- both his parents had died just before the 1850 census. He was 12 years old. It is unknown where William was living, but his 5-year old brother, Thomas W. Oscar Elburn, was living with his grandmother, Mary Middleton Ashley. William cannot be found in Districts 1, 2, or 3 and the name William Samuel Elburn or any variant thereof, cannot be found according to Joan Elburn Farley. Because his younger brother was living with their grandmother, William may be living with some of his Ashley aunts or uncles.
1860 Jun 14 – William m. Mary Elizabeth Deford. Their marriage is recorded in the Kent County ClerkÕs Office Marriage Ledger and appears in ÒAccording to the ChurchÓ by Trish Surles. MaryÕs siblings were William, Katherine, Henry Stephen, Emma Eglantine, and Eleanora Mason.
1860 census – 1st Election District, Kent, MD, William was 28 and Mary 21.
1870 census – William is living in Chestertown, Kent, MD, age 32, with his wife Mary E. 31, and their children Thomas 9, Charles 7, and James W. 5.
1880 census – William is listed in Edesville, Kent Co., MD; he states that both his parents were born in Maryland.
1900 census – William is listed in
Chestertown, Kent Co., MD.

1910 census of Chestertown, Kent Co., MD, William is widowed. William S. is 71, Walter L. is 37, Richard L. (sic) is 28; also living with them is Emma M. Bird, a boarder.
1913 Feb 7 – William died in Chestertown, Kent, MD.

5.2 Thomas H. O. Elburn, b. 12 Feb 1843 in Kent, MD, d. Sep 1843 in infancy. His vital records are recorded in the Family Bible.
5.3 Thomas W. Oscar Elburn, b. 28 Nov 1845 in Kent, MD, d. 26 Oct 1854, age 9. He is listed in the 1850 census of District 2, Kent Co., MD. Ancestry.com has ThomasÕ name indexed as Elberson, but it looks like Elburn to me, and it states he was born in Maryland. His vital records are recorded in the Family Bible.
Mary A. Ashley appears in the next census in 1860 as age 70, born in MD, and living with other Ashley members: Joseph 48, Martha 7, Mary A. 3, Georgeana 8/12, Joseph 8, Laura 9, William 6, Eliza 11, and John 22. Mary Middleton Ashley is buried at St. PaulÕs Churchyard in Kent Co., MD, born 1788, died 11 Dec 1869, the spouse of William H. Ashley who died in 1827. She is even listed in the 1830 census as head of household, with 9 in her family. She is living near these families: Bryan, Hynson, Richard Grante, Thomas Jones, Middleton, Crouch. She is listed in the 1840 census of District 1, Kent Co., MD with 14 in her family.
Eliza Wheat was Eliza Snow (1798-1850) who married James Wheat, 1813, in Maryland. She is related to the Kendall families. This census indicates Eliza was crippled. William and Mary Middleton AshleyÕs youngest child, a daughter, was Mary Jane Ashley. She m1. John V. Smith, and had 3 daughters (the first daughterÕs name was John): John E. Augusta Smith, Hannah B. G. Smith, and J. Lucy Smith. When John died in 1855, Mary Jane remarried Bunkvige Pancrattus Stauffer in the same year. They had children William T., Mary S., John Alfred, and Joseph Pancrattus. As for the census above, EJ = Mary Jane b. 1827 age 24 daughter; HP = Hannah BG b. 1845 age 5 granddaughter, and John A. = John Augusta, granddaughter.
