Introduction

Samuel was born in 1783, married ca. 1809, and died in 1839. Millicent was born ca. 1795 according to the 1810 and 1820 census, which indicates she was only 15 when her first child was born. Only two of their sons had heirs to carry on the Elburn name:

Fourth Generation

Children of Samuel Elburn and Millicent, 3.1

4.1* Thomas Washington Elburn, b. ca. 1810 in Rock Hall, Kent Co., MD, and listed on his fatherÕs Deed of Mortgage on 12 Mar 1845. Thomas died between 23 Nov 1849 (the date of the Chancery Record which shows his name) and Apr 1850 in Kent, MD (when his wife died as a widow).

The Deed of Mortgage dated 12 March 1845 (JNG Liber 10 Folio 80) states that Thomas W. Elburn was the son of Samuel Elburn and his wife, Millicent. The deed also reveals siblings of Thomas: Mary Ann Elburn; Edward Elburn who married Sarah Ann Hall; Sarah Elizabeth Elburn who married John Byron; William Elburn; and Millicent Louisa Elburn who married James R. Chambers. The ÒW.Ó for his middle name stands for Washington as seen in the Deed of Mortgage of his fatherÕs estate.

Marriage

Thomas W. Elburn m. Sarah Garetta Elizabeth Ashley on 4 Jan 1837 in Kent Co., MD. She was b. 29 May 1810, per a family Bible, in Kent Co., MD, dau. of William Henry Ashley (1770 in England-30 Aug 1827 in Chestertown) and Mary Middleton (1788-11 Dec 1869). Both William Henry Ashley and Mary Middleton were buried at St. PaulÕs Church Cemetery in Sandy Bottom, Kent Co., MD.

The death date for Thomas W. Elburn is between 23 Nov 1849 when he signed a deed, and Apr 1850 when his wife died as a widow, and before the 1850 census was taken. Both of them signed a deed on 23 Nov 1849. When they died, they left behind two young children: William Samuel Elburn was 12; Thomas W. Oscar Elburn was 5 (who died at age 9). Third son, Thomas H. O. Elburn had died in infancy in 1843.

Grandmother Mary Middleton Ashley took a large role in the lives of the Elburn family when both Thomas W. and her daughter Sarah Garetta Ashley died, as MaryÕs husband, William Henry Ashley, had already died in 1827.

Chronology

1810 – Thomas W. Elburn born. His wife Sarah Garetta Elizabeth Ashley was b. 29 May 1810 in Kent, MD, the daughter of William Ashley and Mary Middleton. However, her death record in 1850 says she was aged 35 or born in 1815. A discrepancy exists between the family Bible and the census mortality schedule (which was the best guestimate of whoever gave the information to the census taker or what the census taker wrote down). At her death, Sarah is nowhere to be found, and her 5-year old son, Thomas W. Oscar Elburn, is living with his grandmother, Mary Middleton Ashley.

1820 Census – Thomas should be listed with his father Samuel, as Thomas was age 10, but that census record has not been found; Samuel is also not living with his brother James.

1820 Census – William Ashley, father of Sarah Garetta Elizabeth Ashley, lived in Election District 1, Kent, Maryland, with a family of 13. Daughter Sarah was age 10.

1827 Aug 30 – Sarah Garetta Elizabeth AshleyÕs father, William Ashley, died. SarahÕs mother, Mary Middleton Ashley, is listed in the 1830 census in District 1, Kent, MD, as head of household with 9 in her family.

Samuel died intestate and the estate descended to Thomas W. Elbern & Sarah E., his wife; Edward, Mary Ann, Sarah Elizabeth Elbern and others, his children and heirs at law, subject to the dower of Millicent Elbern. This Deed of Mortgage states that Thomas W. Elburn was the son of Samuel Elburn and his wife, Millicent. The Deed also reveals siblings of Thomas: Mary Ann Elburn, Edward Elburn who m. Sarah Ann Hall, Sarah Elizabeth Elburn who married John Byron, William Elburn, and Millicent Louisa Elburn who married James R. Chambers. It states

Millicent Elbern to Thos. Walker and others – 142 acre tract in Quaker Neck formerly sold to Samuel Elbern 26 Sep 1837. Samuel died intestate and estate descended to his eldest son Thomas W. Elbern and Sarah E., his wife; Edward, Mary Ann, Sarah Elizabeth Elbern and others, his children and heirs at law, subject to the dower of Millicent Elbern.

1845 Nov 28 – third child, son Thomas W. Oscar Elburn was born in Kent, MD; he died 26 Oct 1854 and was living with his grandmother, Mary Ashley, in the 1850 census as both his parents had died before the 1850 census (see 1850 census below). Only son William Samuel Elburn lived to adulthood.

1848 May 20 – Thomas W. ElburnÕs mother Millicent died. From Read All About it in the Kent News, 1845 - 1857 by Shirley Cahall: page 32, May 20, 1848. Died - In Quaker Neck, on the 12 instant, Mrs. Elburn. She did not appear in the Chancery Court papers dated 1849 (see below) with her children.

Edward Elbern (brother of Thomas W. Elbern), b. 1820 in MD, m. Sarah Ann Hall on 9 Feb 1846 in Kent Co., MD. He d. 15 Feb 1857.

Mary Ann Elbern (sister of Thomas W. Elbern), b. 1816-1820 in MD.

Willliam Henry Elbern (brother of Thomas W. Elbern), b. 1827 in MD.

Thomas W. Elbern, still alive between 23 Nov 1849, but died before the Apr 1850 when his wife died and her report states she was a widow (see below). Neither Thomas nor his wife Sarah appear in the 1850 census, enumerated on 20 Jul 1850.

John Byron m. Sarah Elizabeth Elburn (sister of Thomas W. Elbern) on 19 May 1849. John was b. 1806 and died before 1860.

Sarah Elizabeth Byron, b. 1823 in MD (sister of Thomas W. Elbern).

Millicent Elbern (Millicent Louisa, youngest sibling of Thomas W. Elbern).

Sarah E. Elbern (wife of Thomas W. Elbern).

William Elbern, could be son of Thomas W. Elburn who was b. 6 Jun 1838, William Samuel Elburn.

1850 Apr – It is assumed that this Mrs. Elburn was the wife of Thomas W. Elburn who died before 1850, as a widow. She was born in 1815, died Apr 1850 of inflamed bowels, age 35. However, the family Bible states she was born 29 May 1810 in Kent Co., MD, and not in 1815.

Another piece of evidence to support this belief is that son Thomas W. Oscar Elburn was living with his grandmother, Mary Ashley, in the 1850 census taken in July 1850. Thomas, age 5, would have been an orphan at the time of the census.

"United States Census (Mortality Schedule), 1850," Elburn, Kent County, Kent, Maryland line 29, page 2. This came from a record found by the Mormon Church site, family search.org. Listed as Mrs. Elburn, widow, United States Census mortality schedule, Kent County 1850.

Oscar Elburn who was born 28 Nov 1845 was living with his grandmother, Mary Ashley in the 1850 census as age 5. It is unknown where son William lived in 1850.

Eliza Wheat was Eliza Snow (1798-1850) who married James Wheat, 1813, in Maryland. She is related to the Kendall families. This census indicates Eliza was crippled. William and Mary Middleton AshleyÕs youngest child, a daughter, was Mary Jane Ashley. She m1. John V. Smith, and had 3 daughters (the first daughterÕs name was John): John E. Augusta Smith, Hannah B. G. Smith, and J. Lucy Smith. When John died in 1855, Mary Jane remarried Bunkvige Pancrattus Stauffer in the same year. They had children William T., Mary S., John Alfred, and Joseph Pancrattus. As for the census above, EJ = Mary Jane b. 1827 age 24 daughter; HP = Hannah BG b. 1845 age 5 granddaughter, and John A. = John Augusta, grandson.

6003: Henry W. Archer vs. Edward Elbern, Mary Ann Elbern appears.

1850 Census –Mary Ann was about 32 years old in this census, but she died before the census as she is not listed, even looking for her as possibly married with another surname.

4.3 Edward Elburn, b. 1820 in MD, m. Sarah Ann Hall on 9 Feb 1846 in Kent Co., MD. He d. 15 Feb 1857 Quaker Neck, Kent, MD. No known heirs. Sarah Ann Hall Elburn, the widow of Edward Elburn, m2. 11 Jan 1851 Kent News: TrusteeÕs Sale – all the farm situated in Quaker Neck, in Kent County, known as ÒThomasÕ PurchaseÓ containing 142 Acres being the same farm or which Samuel Elburn, late of Kent County, died seized and since occupied by Edward Elburn. (This is son Edward who married Sarah Ann Hall).

1857 Feb 21 –Edward died. Found by Joan Elburn Farley on 6 Apr 2014:

21 Feb 1857 Kent News: Died – in Quaker Neck, on Sunday last, Mr. Edward Elburn.

Genealogist Elaine Rodney had previously declared the death date of Edward as 21 Feb 1857, but that was the date the obituary came out in the paper. 21 Feb 1857 was a Saturday, so ÒSunday LastÓ was 15 February 1857.

Joan Elburn Farley believes that SamuelÕs land in Quaker Neck is part of Tract #38. The Colonial Quaker Neck map, Kent County, Maryland, shows the tracts granted by the Lords Baltimore. The 1845 deed from the Elburn family refers to the 142-acre tract as ÒThomasÕ PurchaseÓ, and says it is bordered by the Trew Land, which is indicated as Tract #38 on the Quaker Neck. Millicent and children bought this land from J. B. Eccleston, Trustee for Bartus Trew. For more details, see the Quaker Neck Map.

By the 1860 census, she was age 36, b. 1824 in Maryland, living in District 1, Kent Co., MD with Spencer 38, and her 2 children by her first husband, John Byron: Samuel Byron (named after SarahÕs father), b. 1851, and William Byron, b. 1854. Also living with them were Isaac Winchester 14, and Sarah Byron 26. Sarah Leverton was living in the 1870 census in District 5, Kent Co., MD with her husband Spencer, with her 2 children by her first marriage, Samuel Byron 19 and William Byron 17, and with Sarah Hinikens 11, John Winchester 25, Anna Jones 30, Laura Jones 5, and Anne Jones 6/12. By the 1880 census of Edesville, Kent Co., MD, Spencer was a widower as his wife Sarah had died. Living with him was Samuel Byron, 28, Mary E. Crouch 36, Birdie Crouch 6, Anna M. Strong 69. His brother William H. Byron was age 28, b. 1852, living in Chestertown, Kent Co., MD, working as a stage driver, living with his step-brother James S. Byron age 36 who states that his mother was Annie Byron or John ByronÕs first wife, who was also living with them, and widowed.

Leverton Family

Sarah and William S. Leverton appear in the 1860 census as Sarah A. Leverton, age 36, b. ca. 1824, and Spencer Leverton is 38, b. ca. 1822, living with Sarah Byron, the widowed wife of John Byron who died in 1860, the year of this census; Sarah Byron was age 26 or born ca. 1834. Also living with them in the 1860 census was Sarah ByronÕs two sons, Samuel 9 and William 6, plus Isaac Winchester, age 14.

Samuel died intestate and estate descended to Thomas W. Elbern and Sarah E., his wife; Edward, Mary Ann, Sarah Elizabeth Elbern and others, his children and heirs at law, subject to the dower of Millicent Elbern.

1848 – In the Kent News, May 20, 1848: Died – in Quaker Neck, on the 12th Instant, Mrs. Elburn. (i.e., 12 May 1848). This is the same exact format they used for Samuel. On Chancery Papers (below) dated 1849/11/23, where the Elburn family was foreclosing on the mortgage of ThomasÕ Purchase from Henry W. Archer, MillicentÕs name is not included with the names of all the children/heirs – because she had died. This information courtesy of Joan Elburn Farley on 6 Apr 2014. EdwardÕs mother, Millicent Elburn, died on 12 May 1848, when Edward was about 28 years old.

Henry W. Archer may be the one who was born 18 Apr 1813 in Harford Co., MD who married Mary Elizabeth Walker in Chestertown, Kent Co., MD, in 1840. The 1880 census states that Henry W. Archer was born in 1820 and Mary E. Archer was born in 1834 which shows how far off these census records can be.

1850 Census – 1st Election District, Kent County, MD, enumerated 16 Aug 1850. Edward was born in 1820 and was a farmer. They are living with one mulatto man and 5 Blacks. Even though the 1850 census isnÕt exactly perfect, you may want to skim through all 55 images of it in Rock Hall to find other connections. If Edward and Sarah had any children, they would have been mentioned here as they had been married for 4 years, but none are listed. Both Edward and Sarah were white.

Regarding the name ÒLemuelÓ Joseph Elburn who was born in 1830 in Kent Co., MD, the only earlier Lemuel I could find is Capt. Lemuel Washington Ashley, born 1821 in Rock Hall, died 1897 in Queen AnneÕs Co., MD. His parents were Isaiah Ashley and Mary Dudley. Capt. L. W. Ashley m. Sarah Jane Blackiston. In the 1850 census of Rock Hall, Lemuel W. Ashley and Sarah J. Ashley (on page 26) lived near Edward Elburn and his wife Sarah (on p. 24, image shown above).

4.6 Millicent Louisa Elburn, b. ca. 1830 in MD, m. James R. Chambers on 4 Oct 1858 in Kent Co., MD. She d. before 1891 as in 1891 James m. Amy. James was b. Apr 1835 in MD.

The enumeration date was 17 Jul 1860 and therefore the infant daughter was born 2 months earlier or in May. It states they were all born in MD.

1870 census of Sassafras, Kent Co., MD, James R. Chambers was 33 and ÒMillisonÓ L. Chambers was 40, living with their 3 daughters, Lydia A. 10, Sarah E. 8, and Susan J. 4. This puts MillicentÕs birthdate exactly in 1830, and it states she was born in Maryland, although the 1850 census states she was born in Delaware. The 1880 census is quite interesting. It shows daughter Susan J. Chambers as b. 1866 in Maryland, now living in Warwick, Cecil Co., MD, with her parents James Chambers 42, Louisa Chambers 51, Joseph 8, and Elbern Chambers 4. Elbern was b. 20 Mar 1875 in Maryland and d. Apr 1963 in Maryland. His WWI Draft Registration Card states his name as James Elborn Chambers, which is how his name appears everywhere except in the 1880 census.

1880 census of Warwick, Cecil, MD, lists Louisa Chambers age 51 in MD (1829) and James Chambers b. 1838 in MD, and their 4 parents were also born in MD. They were living with their dau. Susan 14, son Joseph 8, and son Elbern 4.
