From "A biographical history of Greene County Pennsylvania" by Samuel P. Bates

J. T. ELBIN, Associate Judge of Greene County, and one of the earliest settlers of Aleppo Township, now living, was born in Allegheny County, Maryland, March 18, 1824. He was left an orphan when a small child and was reared by his grandfather, John Elbin, who was a prominent farmer of Greene County, and died intestate in 1845. Judge Elbin was thrown out in the world without a dollar, but was ambitious to be independent and worked as a farm hand by the day and month until he succeeded in accumulating enough to invest in land. He has been involved in farming and stock-transactions in this county since 1848, and has been very successful in all his business ventures. In 1847 he was united in marriage with, Hannah, daughter of John and Hannah (Sidwell) McVay, and they are the parents of six children, viz.: Lucinda, wife of L. Sammons; Rachel, wife of George Grim; Henry, who is an undertaker; John W., a farmer; Belle, wife of George, and Mary Ann, deceased. Mrs. Elbin belongs to the Cumberland Presbyterian Church, and the Judge is a member of the Church of God, in which he takes an active interest, and has served as superintendent of the Sabbath-school. He is a Democrat, and was elected Associate Judge in 1884. He is a member of the I. O. O. F., and has served as Justice of the Peace for a period of twenty years; elected in 1860, and held the office until 1880.

Death

Children of John Elben and Elizabeth Wolford, 5.6

Note: George ÒAlbanÓ exists in Aurelius, Washington Co., OH, but his parents were Abram and Eliza Alban, so do not get confused. In the 1840 census of Perry, Licking Co., OH, John is listed as age 30-39, and Elizabeth is listed as age 20-29, and they are living with one daughter, age 10-14 or born 1826-1830.

6.2 Mary Elben, b. 1831 in MD, d. 17 Jan 1869. She m. William Jackson McArtor (McCarter) and had at least 6 children.

6.3 George A. Elben, b. 1839 in Perry, Licking Co., OH, appears in the 1850 census of Perry, Licking Co., OH, living with his parents, age 11.  He is not with his parents in the 1860 census of Fallsbury, Licking Co., OH, but his brother John C. is. Could he be the one who appears in the 1860 census, in Salem, Champaign Co., OH, listed as George Alben?

6.4 John C. Elben, b. 1849, listed in the 1860 census of Fallsburg, Licking Co., OH, living with his parents. In the 1870 census of Fallsburg, Licking Co., OH, is John and Elizabeth Elben showing them living with children John C. McCarter, age 20, and William H. McCarter, age 10. The age fits John C. Elben, but the name change is puzzling; perhaps Elizabeth had been married to a McCarter. The 1910 census of Fallsburg shows John C. McCarter age 60 stating his father was born in Virginia and his mother in Maryland; therefore, he was definitely not an Elben. The 1910 Ohio Census Miracode Index shows John C. McCarter with son Arthur B. age 27, son Otis E. age 23, son Carl R. age 21, and daughter Nellie M. age 16 – all these are Elben Christian names, but apparently they are not Elbens.

Children of William Elben Sr. and Rachel, 5.7

1850 census of District 9, Allegany Co., MD, shows William b. 1810, living with his wife Rachel 33 (b. 1817), and their children Sarah 12 (b. 1838), Ann 10 (b. 1840), William J. 8 (b. 1842), George 5 (b. 1845), Mazy Elben 3 (b. 1847), and Henry 1 (b. 1849). Note that his name was spelled ÒElbenÓ. They live next to George Lashley and his wife Mazy who was born an Elben. Also, they live next to Jacob Lashley and his wife Louisa who was born an Elben. On the other size of William Elben and his family live his parents, Ruben and Mary Elben. In the 1870 census of Allegany Co., MD, William lived in Flintstone, Allegany Co., MD, with his wife Rachel and their children John, George, Maza, Henry, and Leonard.

6.5 Sarah E. Elben, b. 25 Jul 1838 in Maryland, d. 30 Oct 1908 in Flintstone, Allegany Co., MD. She lived with parents in the 1850 census of Allegany Co., MD. She m. John W. Thompson, in 1861; he was b. 1836, d. 1921. They had children Anna Rachel Thompson Smith, 1863-1913; Francis F. Thompson, 1864-1865 (she died in infancy on 15 Jan 1864 and is buried with her grandfather William Elbin at the Elbin Cemetery in Flintstone); Valeria Frances Thompson McElfish, 1875-1942. The 1880 census shows John W. Thomson 44, Sarah E. 41, and children Rachel A. 16, Lizzie M. 14, Hannah L. 12, William H. 9, Caroline M. 7, Valerie F. 5, Bessie M. 1 month, living with SarahÕs brother William J. Elbin, age 36. In the 1900 census, Sarah and her husband live in Flintstone, Allegany Co., MD, married in 1861, and Sarah states that both her parents were born in Maryland.

As for the Willison family, John B. Willison, b. 1850, shows up in the 1910 census of Allegany Co., MD, with his wife Emily who could have been born an Elbin, born 1845. Next door to them lives Ellen J. Elbin, alone as head of household, b. 1848 in Maryland, age 62. She states that she is widowed and that her father was born in Maryland and her mother in Virginia; we are not sure which Elbin married Ellen.

Census

He lived with his parents in the 1870 census of Allegany, MD. John registered for the U.S. Civil War in Flintstone on 31 Oct 1863, when he was 20, a laborer, unmarried, born in Maryland.

In the 1880 census of Flintstone, Allegany Co., MD, he was single, a house carpenter, living with the Thomson family; his sister Sarah had married John W. Thomson.

The Maryland Directory of 1890 shows he was a merchant in Flintstone, Allegany Co., MD.

Military

John is shown in the U.S. Civil Draft Registrations Record of July and August 1863 in Allegany Co., MD, in sub-division 15, Flintstone, age 20 as of 1 Jul 1863, a laborer, unmarried, and born in Maryland. Therefore, he was born no later than 1 Jul 1843.

In 1864 at age 21 he was with the First Potomac Home Brigade, Cavalry, A-Wh as a U.S. Union Soldier. Over 10 war documents to be added here when I have time.

Death

Obituary: Cumberland Times, Aug. 14, 1908. John Elbin, aged citizen, succumbs to appoplexy. When Mrs. Henry Betz went to see why Henry Elbin, an aged carpenter in this city and a Union veteran, did not respond to her calls for him to come to his breakfast at Mrs. Eaton's boarding house on North Liberty Street this morning, she found him lifeless. It is thought that Mr. Elbin, who had not been well for the past year, was a victim of apoplexy, as the indications were that he had probably died in his sleep during the night. The deceased was 65 years of age and a member of a large connection in this county and was born near Flintstone. For many years, he was a resident of this city, working at the trade of carpenter. At one time he was engaged in the grocery business but of late years he had retired from the trade of carpenter as he was a pensioner. He is survived by the following children: Mrs. Katherine Craig, wife of a former newspaper man of this city now living in Indiana; Mrs. George Fradiska and Edward Elbin living in this city; brothers, Henry, Leonard, and George living in the city. His wife was a Miss Amanda Willison who had died several years ago. The funeral arrangements will be made on arrival of several of the relatives tonight.

In the 1910 census of Allegany, George was widowed and living with his brother-in-law, John W. Thompson, who was also widowed. In the 1910 census, Henry is found living as a boarder in Davis, Tucker Co., WV, age 61, stating that both his parents were born in Maryland. Amanda is living with her children in the 1910 census of Flintstone, Allegany Co., MD, with the status married; her children were Alven P. T. 18, William A. 26, and Charles G. and Esther F. 16. By the 1920 census, Henry is 70 and living with his daughter Esther and her family in Flintstone, Allegany Co., MD.
