Fourth Generation

Children of John Elbin, 3.1

4.1* John Elbin (2), b. after 1774 in Maryland as per the 1790 census, d. 1845 in Greene Co., PA. By the 1800 census, he was living in Colerain, Bedford Co., PA, and was a taxable inhabitant, meaning that he was a resident, a citizen, and owned property, living with or near his father. John lived in Allegany Co., MD in the 1810 and 1820 censuses, and then moved to Aleppo, Greene Co., PA, by the 1840 census. See the National Register of Historic Places in Allegany Co., MD. John may have been the John ÒElvinÓ listed in the 1800 census of Richhill Township, Greene Co., PA, which is extremely close to Aleppo. We assume that John (2) married about 1790 and his wife died before the 1820 census.

Census

1800 taxable inhabitant -- John Elbin (1) and John Elbin (2) from Colerain, Bedford Co., PA, and no other male Elbin is listed; therefore, John (2) could have been the oldest son, and an adult in 1800 or born before 1782.

John Elbin (2)Õs father, John Elbin (1), removed to Southampton Twp., Bedford Co., PA by the 1810 census; John (2) lived on family land in Allegany Co., MD, in 1810. John (2) had son John (3) in Allegany Co. who was born close to 1791 as he is not in the 1810 census with his father.

In the 1800 census, John ÒElvinÓ (2) appears in Richhill, Greene Co., PA. We are unsure which generation this would be of the many Johns.

In the 1810 census, John Elbin (2) is listed in District 6, Allegany Co., MD.

Military

Reuben Elbin appears in the War of 1812 in 1 Regiment (RaganÕs), Maryland Militia, as a Private according to the British Invasion of MD, 1812-1815, by William Matthew Marine, Baltimore, 1913, 519 pages, page 278. Note the variations in spelling of Ruben and Reuben. Reuben Elbin is found on p. 278 during the War of 1812 when he was ca. 32 years old. See http://fortmchenrylibrary.org/index.cfm?action=1812&id=3389. In Allegany Co., MD, during the War of 1812, Reuben was a soldier under Capt. Thomas Blair.

In the ÒBritish Invasion of MarylandÓ 1812-1815 by William M. Marine, website: http://www.archive.org/stream/britishinvasiono00inmari/britishinvasiono00inmari_djvu.txt, the names are spelled Elbin and Elburn. These two men may or may not be related.

This generation of the Elbin family was involved in the War of 1812. In 1814, the War of 1812Õs only land battle on the Eastern Shore of Maryland took place near Tolchester. Here the British, under Sir Peter Parker, were defeated and their commander killed.

The ÒHistory of Western MarylandÓ by John Thomas Scharf, 1843-1898, Vol. II, 1882, Page 1365, shows Reuben Elben Sr. and Reuben Elben Jr. both listed in 28 Jun 1828 together in a Committee of Vigilance. This would indicate, if Reuben Jr. was an adult, he would have been born ca. 1810 or before, and Reuben Sr. would have been born ca. 1790 or before. See http://archive.org/stream/historyofwestern02scha#page/1364/mode/2up.

Census

The 1790 census states he was born between 1774-1790. The AGBI (American Genealogical Biographical Index) states Reuben was born in 1780 in Maryland.

In 1850 she was 63 and born in 1787, in 1830 she was b. 1791-1800, and in 1820 she was b. 1776-1794. Perhaps this needs more research. Note that Arnold Lashley (signature below) was born in 1803 in PA, and was living in the 1860 census in Elbinsville, Southampton Township, Bedford Co., PA, the husband of NathanielÕs daughter Mary. The daughter of Arnold Lashley, Naomi Ann Lashley, married NathanielÕs son, George Elbin. Reuben ElbonÕs daughter, Louisa, married Jacob Lashley and appears in the 1880 census of Flintstone, Allegany Co., MD. The connection with the Lashley family verifies that Reuben and Nathaniel were brothers. In this 1880 census, Louisa Lashley states that both her parents were born in Maryland.
