Introduction

The Mason-Dixon line runs right between the land the Elbin family owned in southern Bedford Co., PA, and in northern Allegany Co., MD. All John ElbinÕs families lived around this area early on. The first white settlers came in 1732, then in 1758 the Scotch-Irish Presbyterians moved in. In 1769 a boundary line between Pennsylvania and Maryland was reached through the English surveyors George Mason and Jeremiah Dixon (see the dotted line at the bottom of this map, and just over that line is Flintstone, Allegany Co., MD. Note the towns in Mann Township where the Elbin family lived: Artemas and Inglesmith. Southampton on the left is another township, same relationship as the Mann Township, where Elbinsville and Chaneysville are situated. See Mason-Dixon Line Map showing the towns in which the Elbin family lived.

If people had a difficult time spelling Elbin years ago, even today they have a hard time spelling Flintstone, as it is spelled Flinstone here.

Early Elbin Settlers

Two men named John Elbin existed early on, one who moved to Allegany Co., MD, and the other who lived in Salem Co., NJ. One of these two men named John Elbin was in the Revolutionary War, and circumstantial evidence states that he was the one who moved to Allegany Co., MD, for these reasons:

á      In 1778 the General Assembly of Allegany Co., MD, reserved all unpatented lands Òwestward of Fort CumberlandÓ for Maryland soldiers of the Revolution. John moved to Allegany Co. probably after the Rev. War and was a squatter until 10 years later in 1788 when he was awarded the land.

á      The John in the Rev. War spelled his name ÒElvinÓ, and so did his youngest son, Nathaniel, spell his name Nathaniel ÒElvinÓ in his will of 1841.

á      There is no proof that the John Elben who lived in Salem Co., NJ, ever lived in Maryland early on. Going eastward was not the normal migration path, and going from Kent Co., MD, to Salem Co., NJ, is due east. He may have immigrated directly to New Jersey from perhaps England and later on ca. 1860, a descendant William Turpin Elben moved to Talbot County, Maryland.

á      John in Salem Co., NJ, was born ca. 1761 in Salem Co., NJ, and was therefore probably not the John in the Rev. War in Maryland in 1778.

á      The other men in the Rev. War (William, Nathaniel, Matthew, and Reuben) all resided in Kent Co., MD, as John did.

á      The Salem Co., NJ, line spelled their name Elben and the one from Allegany Co., MD, spelled their name Elbin.

1750 John was born, place unknown. As he entered the Rev. War on 2 Jun 1778 in Maryland, and he needed to be 16 years of age, he was born 1762 or before; Kent Co., MD, was established in 1642. Because his first son was born ca. 1775, I calculated his birthdate somewhere ca. 1750.

1774 – Approximate date John married.

1775 – Son John (2) was born in Maryland.

1778 -- John enlisted in the Continental Service in the Revolutionary War on 2 Jun 1778 in Maryland.

Page 204, John Elvin. Muster of Maryland Troops of the 5th, 6th, 7th, and German Regiment. Footnote 2 stands for DobsonÕs.

The earliest mention of this family in the Revolutionary War was John ÒElvinÓ who was discharged on 2 Jun 1778 even before the other Elbon members had enlisted. The letters ÒvÓ and ÒbÓ sound very much alike, especially in the Spanish language where they are referred to as Òb peque–aÓ and Òb grandeÓ. John lived most of his life in Bedford Co., PA.

In 1778 the General Assembly of Allegany Co., MD, reserved all unpatented lands Òwestward of Fort CumberlandÓ for Maryland soldiers of the Revolution.

1779 -- John Elbin was discharged on 14 Mar 1779, before any of the other Elbons entered the service.

1781 – JohnÕs son Reuben was born in Flintstone, Allegany Co., MD.

1782 – JohnÕs daughter Nancy was born.

1784 – JohnÕs daughter Mary was born. John didnÕt have any more children until 1795 when Nathaniel was born in Elbinsville, Bedford Co., PA.

1783 -- An assessment for ÒJohn ElburnÓ in 1783 is listed in adjacent Cecil Co., MD; that county was established in 1672.

1788 -- John Elbin was the earliest member of the Elbin families in Allegany Co., MD and later Bedford Co., PA. He received land in 1788 lying west of Fort Cumberland in Allegany Co., MD.

1790 census of Harford Co., MD. John had land in both Allegany Co., MD, and Harford Co., MD, as his name appears in both places on one deed.
John Elbin (1) is listed as 1 white male 16 years and over including heads of family (born before 1774)
2 free white males under 16 years of age (born after 1774), John (2) and Reuben (b. 1781)
3 free white females including heads of families, wife, Nancy (b. 1782), and Mary (b. 1784).
Note that Nathaniel was not born until 1795; this census calculates precisely.
no other free persons and no slaves.
1790 census includes states CT, ME, MD, MA, NH, NY, NC, PA, RI, SC, VT. Harford County is just north of Baltimore, MD, and next to Cecil Co., MD (where John was in 1783), and just across the Chesapeake Bay from Chestertown, Kent Co., MD.

John Elbin (1)Õs name appears close to the Hall family (Elizabeth and Mary Hall both were head of household and both had slaves); it was thought he may have married a woman named Hal

John ElbinÕs name appears on one deed showing his address in Harford Co. and Allegany Co., MD. This is proof that this is the same John early on.

The following Index of the 1790 census shows John on p. 80, plus the two widowed women, Sarah and Hannah, on pages 81 and 83. This definitely proves that John was not the husband of either Sarah or Hannah. Although the 1790 census is not 100%, these 3 are the only ones listed at that time, showing no husband for either widow Sarah or Hannah. Their husbands would have to be Mathew, Nathaniel, or William, but we have not figured that out yet, except that they died in the Rev. War.

1800-1840 -- John Elbin appears in the 1800, 1810, and 1820 censuses of Colerain (Southampton Township), Bedford Co., PA, whereas a younger John Elbin, probably his son, appears in the 1810, 1820, and 1830 census of nearby Allegany Co., MD, just over the Mason-Dixon line from Southampton Township. In the 1840 census, this same John Elbin moved west to Aleppo Township in Greene Co., PA. Besides this John, the rest of the Elbin families remained mostly in southern Bedford County, PA, along the Mason-Dixon line.
