History and Research

Ref. [8] researched the family coming from Ireland, most likely Wexford.

Charts #46 and #86 are both from Montgomery, Hampden Co., MA.

FFA member Winchell Carroll says he believes that Harmon is the son of Thomas French (FFA Chart #9) who disappears from Guilford, CT in the mid-1790s at the same time a Thomas appears in Montgomery, MA. This Thomas French was b. 20 Aug 1762, m. Eunice Wheeler and had two children, Wealthy and Ely born 1794 and 1796. Maybe at that time he did leave and go to Montgomery. The migration path was straight north along the Connecticut River Valley, but this could be since he died in Hartford, CT, which is also straight north from Guilford.

Harmon FrenchÕs grandparents could have also been John French (FFA Chart #46) and his wife Susannah Bill who had children born between 1761 and 1774, who were Abigail, Anna, Bill, Cynthya, Dudley, John, Mary, Prudence, Sarah, and Wheeler, but no Harmon.

The Harmon French family may have resided in Montgomery, Hampden Co., MA, as early as 1799. The family also lived in Hartford, CT; Guilford, CT; Westfield, MA; Windsor, CT; New Britain, CT; and New York City.

Emeline Dowd, Harmon FrenchÕs wife, is in FFA Chart #9 – twice. Harmon French married into a French line, that of Thomas French of Guilford, CT, one of the first planters of that town. This does not actually mean that Harmon is connected to Chart #9. HarmonÕs parents are still unknown. Chart #9 is not yet complete.
