This chart is in no way started. Please be patient. What you see here is only a bunch of jumbled notes still full of errors. Sorry.

To this genealogical tragedy of errors several professional and amateur genealogists have contributed by stating that Lieut. William French of Cambridge was baptized in Halstead, Essex Co., England, March 15, 1603 and was descended, through three generations of the name of Thomas, from Thomas Frenche, the elder, of Wethersfield, County Essex England, who died in 1599. Yet Mrs. Elizabeth (French) Bartlett, descendant of Lieut. William French, and "Record Searcher in England for the Committee on English Research of the New England Historic Genealogical Society, 1908-1917," published in New England Historical & Genealogical Register, Vol 65 pp. 284-286, proof that the William French who was baptized March 15, 1603, in Halstead, Essex Co., England, died in London in 1621, unmarried, and that his estate was administered by his brother, John, and then his brother, Edward, when John died, and then sister Elianor when Edward died.

History and Research

The main portion of this chart is taken from BeyerÕs book [1]. After only four generations in America, this family spread from MA to CT, VT, NH, NY and PA. At present the descendants of William French may be in most U.S. states, including Mara French in CA. At present we have over 50 members who are descended from William French.

This chart is in no way complete; however, you can view various websites showing this line in detail. Just remember that this William was born in 1606, not in 1603. The William French who was born in 1603 died in 1621 and is detailed on FFA Chart #EB.

Intermarriages

Since the French family emigrated soon after the Pilgrims landed and there were not many families nor marriage choices in America, intermarriages in the French family were common. Here is an intermarriage between Chart #1 and Chart #2. Note that this does not change the male French DNA test results.

Symmes Family

Research done in 1991 which needs many updates and perhaps corrections.

FIRST GENERATION

1.1 Randolph (Randall) Symmes, b. ca. 1580, most likely m. a lady from the Davenaunte family of London or a lady from the Man family of London. Randolph had brother Richard Symmes of Welford. Randolph and Richard were cousins of Thomas Hewett, a citizen and clothmaker of London, who made his will 10 Oct 1575, proved 19 Jun 1576, buried in the parish church of St. Clement where he was a parishioner. Randall made his will on 8 Nov 1599 at the Parish of St. Lawrence Pountney in London [2]. He mentions Elizabeth in this will. Perhaps this Randall was actually another generation back. Randall was possibly of Hertfordshire.

SECOND GENERATION

2.1 Elizabeth Symmes, b. ca. 1603 in England, m. William French, immigrated with him and their four children on the Defence from London in 1635 to Cambridge, MA. Listed as age 32 on the immigration records. Ref [2] shows no marriage between Elizabeth and William at St. Clement in London between 1539-1640. It also shows that none of their children were born at St. Clement between these dates. In fact, no French is listed at all. No surname Symmes (or any similar spelling) is listed in Earles Colne, Essex County between these dates.

2.2 Sara Simmes, b. ca. 1605 in England, immigrated on the Defence from London in 1635 to Cambridge, MA. Listed as age 30 on the immigration records. SaraÕs cousin, Anne Scroggs of Earles Colne, Essex, made her will out on 28 August 1641 giving to "my cousin Sara Simes (who is now in New England) five pounds" [1]. Anne Scroggs also gave to Richard and William Harlakenden, possibly brothers of Roger Harlakenden. Roger immigrated on the Defence from London in 1635 to Cambridge, MA. William Harlakenden was executor of Anne ScroggÕs will, and referred to him as her brother in law of Earles Colne. Sara had a grant of land in Cambridge in 1639 and died there 10 Jun 1653 according to Savage. Sara made her will 4 April 1653 and mentions "brother William French." SaraÕs relationship to the Scroggs family was through the Burton family. Anne ScroggsÕ sister, Smith Scroggs, m. William Harlakenden, son of Thomas and Dorothy (Cheney) Harlakenden. William d. 18 Mar 1674. Smith Harlakenden was buried 28 Jun 1651. Thomas Stanley m. Mary, widow of John Scrogges, mother of Edward Scrogges, and grandmother of Anne Scroggs.
