Also see the Sturtevant family at http://www.frenchfamilyassoc.com/ELBEN/Sturtevant.htm. As we find substantial data that shows this family connects with this Elben line, we will combine them; as for now, the DNA matches exactly, but the name was changed due to adoption.

Fourth Generation

Children of William Elben Sr. and Margaret Dush, 3.1

In the 5 instances shown below in green, it indicates their father William was born in Maryland.

4.1* Reuben Elben, b. 1805-1808 in Muskingum Co., OH, died 31 Dec 1865. The 1860 census of Pleasant, Putnam Co., OH, states that he was born ca. 1805 in Ohio.

His son Godfrey states in the 1880 census of Marengo, Iowa Co., IA, that his father was born in Pennsylvania and his mother in Ohio. If this were true, he would not have been the son of William Elben and Margaret Dush. Godfrey states in the 1900 census that his father was born in Illinois and his mother in Pennsylvania.

Marriage

Reuben m1. Delila ca. 1833. She was born 20 Oct 1813, died 18 Aug 1846 and is buried at the Truro Cemetery in Columbus Grove, Putnam Co., OH. They had one daughter, Sarah Jane.

Reuben m2. Mary ca. 1848; she was b. 20 Feb 1826 and d. 3 Mar 1900 and is also buried at the Truro Cemetery.

Census

Reuben Elbin is listed in the 1850 census, b. 1808 in OH, age 42, living with his wife Mary, age 23, and their 1 year-old dau. Mary M, and newly born son Godfrey. Reuben is listed in the 1860 census of Pleasant, Putnam Co., OH, age 55, with his wife Mary, age 34, and their 5 children: Mary M. age 11, Godfrey age 10, Delila age 7, Aaron age 5, and Emma age 4 months. Reuben died before the 1870 census.

Land Deeds

U.S. General Land Office Records, 5 Oct 1835, Reuben Elben received 40 acres in Zanesville, Licking Co., OH (below).

The U.S. General Land Office Records of Ohio Land Records of Lima, OH, shows Reuben Elben of Licking Co., OH, owned 40 acres on 1 Jun 1845, a cash entry sale (below).

Death

Reuben d. 31 Dec 1865 and is buried at the Truro Cemetery in Columbus Grove, Putnam Co., OH, and his first wife, Delila.

Gravestone below shows Mary, second wife of Ruben Elben, died Mar 3, 1906, aged 80 Y 11 D; therefore, b. 20 Feb 1826. Son Aaron Elben died Mar 14, 1910 aged 54 Y 9 M 4 D; therefore, b. 10 Jun 1855. Both are buried at the Truro Cemetery in Columbus Grove, Putnam Co., OH.

4.2 Mary Elben, b. 14 Jan 1808 in Muskingum Co., OH, d. 2 Apr 1890 in Eden, Licking Co., OH, m. John Martin Souslin on 16 Aug 1827. He was b. 1805 in PA and d. 18 Jun 1876 in Eden, Licking Co., OH, and is buried at the Miles Chapel Cemetery in Licking Co., OH, which shows 23 interments, including (from this family) Lovina Tasy Baker Dush, 7 members of the Holton family who moved from Salem Co., NJ to Ohio, 6 members of the Miles family who also moved from Salem Co., NJ to Ohio, plus Porterfield, Wilkin, and 2 Souslin family members: John Martin and Mary Ann Souslin Miles, b. 29 Apr 1834, d. 25 Oct 1869.

John Martin Souslin d. 18 Jun 1876 in Eden, Licking Co., OH.

Census

1840 census of Eden, Licking Co., OH, Marlin Souslin living with a family of 8. He and Mary were aged 30-39.

1850 census of Eden, Licking Co., OH, John M. Suslin was aged 44 and Mary 42 living with their children Reuben, Margaret, George, Jacob, Susanna, Nancy, Martha, and John.

1860 census of Eden, Licking Co., OH, John Martin Souslin, age 55, living with wife Mary, 53, and their children Reuben, Margaret, George, Susanah, Nancy, Martha, John W., and James B., aged 7 to 30.

1870 census of Wilkins Run, Eden, Licking Co., OH, John M. Souslin is 64 and Mary is 62, living with son John W. Souslin 20. John M. Souslin died before the next census on 18 Jun 1876.

1880 census of Eden, Licking Co., OH, Mary is widowed, age 72, and she states that her father was born in Maryland and her mother was born in Ohio (which is probably incorrect). She is living with her son, John W., age 30. She died in 1890.

4.3 Abbie or Ebbie C. Elben, b. Mar 1808 in Muskingum Co., OH, m. Sloan, head of household, widowed and aged 92 in the 1900 census of Marion Co., OH, stating that both her parents were born in Pennsylvania at which time she stated she could read, write, and speak English (her mother was born in Pennsylvania, but her father was probably born in Maryland). In this census, she is living alone as head of household on Prospect St.

She lived at 130 S. Prospect in Marion Co., OH, in 1901. In 1905 and in 1907 she lived at B. WaddellÕs Home for Aged People in Marion Co. The Old Marion Cemetery in Marion, Marion Co., OH, of 232 interments, has a gravestone of a child Sloan, dates unreadable, but it indicates she was the child of Sarah A. Sloan (could have been Sarah Abbie Sloan). Sarah A. Bryan was b. Jun 1854 in OH and married to William Sloan in 1875 and had several children (the stone could have been hers).

Abbie may have had a daughter named Abbie T. Sloan, b. 1843, d. 1912, and buried at the Saint Paul Lutheran Cemetery in Sonora, Muskingum Co., OH.

4.4* William Elben Jr., b. 14 Aug 1811 in Muskingum Co., OH, d. 28 Sep 1873 in Utica, Licking Co., OH.

He was last in the 1870 census of Morgan, Knox Co., OH; however, it states he was age 51 and therefore born in 1819, not 1811. There may be 2 different men named William; more research is needed.

In 1880 census, William's son or nephew John says William was born in DE, while in the same census his daughter Mary says MD. Gary doesnÕt see any pre-1800 records for ElbenÕs in these states, but there are ElbenÕs in southern New Jersey (specifically Gloucester and Salem counties). In fact, in the tax records of Elsinboro township, Salem County, New Jersey there is a William Elbin listed from 1788-1797. Nicholas Holton (who resided in Falls, Muskingum, Ohio and was tied to the Miles and Dush families of Eden, Licking, Ohio) was also from Salem County, New Jersey.

Written by William J. Bahmer, ÒCentennial History of Coshocton County, Ohio, Vol. II, Chicago, ILÓ: The S. J. Clarke Publishing Co., 1909, p. 97, details information about WilliamÕs son Levi who lived in Coshocton Co., and also gives info about his father, William. His father was born in England. William Elben followed the trades of plasterer and stonemason and also in farming. His death occurred at Utica, Licking Co. His family numbered nine children, 5 sons and 4 daughters, John, George; Levi; Rufus; Willis; Mary; Amanda; Annabel and Caroline.Ó We have no proof that he was born in England.

Marriage

William Elben m. Ruth Ann Fowler ca. 1833. Both died near Utica, Knox Co., Ohio. Ruth was the dau. of John B. Fowler and Huldah Daniels who married in Mendon, MA on 22 Nov 1795 (her parents never left Massachusetts). Ruth Ann Fowler was b. 4 May 1805 in Northbridge, Worcester Co., MA. Because William was born in 1811, it would seem in the early days that he would not have married a woman born in 1804; the next paragraph states she was born in Ohio, not Massachusetts.

The ÒCentennial History of Coshocton Co., OHÓ shown above states that Ruth was born in Ohio and was of Scotch descent. Ruth died on 18 Feb 1852 in Utica, Licking Co., OH. Other websites state that she d. in 1875, but if she had, she would have been in the 1860 and 1870 census, and she is not, not even listed as ÒRuth AnnÓ perhaps married to someone else in Ohio. Therefore, we consider 1852 as her death date.

Where did WilliamÕs children reside after the death of their mother in 1852? This scenario does prove that Ruth died in 1852 or else her younger children would have been living with her. It would seem as though all children went in separate directions. 4 sons joined the Civil War effort, the other children were boarded or adopted or married. One would think that if William were still living, they would be living with him, or at least have kept in contact with them.

Mary b. 1833, married in 1853

John b. 1837, not married until 1872, joined the military in 1861, unknown where he was in the 1860 census.

George b. 1842, joined the military, m. Sarah in 1866, lived in 1870 in Audubon, Montgomery Co., IL.

Levi b. 1844, joined the military, lived in 1880 in Warsaw, Coshocton Co., OH.

Rufus b. 1844, joined the military, lived in 1860 in Madriver, Champaign Co., OH.

Willis b. 1846, lived in 1880 in Martinsburg, Knox Co., OH.

Amanda b. unk.

Annabel b. perhaps 1844 in OH, as there is an Annabel Henderson, age 16, living with Caroline Henderson, age 9, in the 1860 census of Bellefontaine, Logan Co., OH, perhaps adopted sisters. She states that both her parents were born in Pennsylvania in the 1880 census of Lake, Wood Co., OH. She eventually did marry a Henderson, Samuel Henderson.

Caroline b. 1852? The 1860 census of Washington, Holmes Co., OH, states she was about age 6, b. 1854, living with the Booth family. She appears to be an orphan. If William had remarried, she would have lived with him, but apparently he must have died about the same time as his wife. Then in the 1860 census of Bellefontaine, Logan Co., OH, she could have been living with her sister Annabel (see above). She is listed as age 9, b. 1851 in OH. By the 1870 census, she is listed as Caroline Henderson 19, living with William Henderson 37. By the 1880 census, it states she was b. 1851, is age 29, married to William Henderson age 48. Caroline Henderson is listed in findagrave as born 1841, d. 1929, buried at the Christian Church Cemetery in Glenmont, Holmes Co., OH. Another Caroline Henderson is listed as b. 1854, d. 1930, and is buried at the Saint Anns Cemetery in Philo, Muskingum Co., OH – this could have been correct as this is the county where she was born; it states she married John Henderson which indicates her maiden name was not Henderson.

After Ruth Ann Fowler died on 18 Feb 1852 in Utica, Licking Co., OH, all the children were chosen to live with guardians, joined the military, or married.

It is possible that William m2. Mary Catherine Deal on 28 May 1856 in Fredericktown, Knox Co., OH, when she was age 14. One male descendant on the line of Ruth Ann Fowler, and another male descendant on the line of Mary Catherine Deal took DNA tests and they matched exactly. See the details of this line. William had 6 more children: Francis, Scott, Milford, Granville, and Alice. The only mismatch between these two men named William is that the one who married Ruth Ann Fowler was born in 1811 and the one who married Mary Catherine Deal was born in 1819.

Census

1820 census of Falls, Muskingum Co., OH, William was living with his parents and family of 7.

1840 census William lived on his own, as he is not living with his father in 1840 and his mother had died by 1830. His father was living in Perry, Licking Co., OH. His children were very young and born in Licking Co., OH, where he should be in this census, but he is not listed. The census does show 3 adult males living in Licking Co., OH: John, Ruben, and William; agewise, William was his father and John and Reuben were his brothers, but William the son cannot be found. My assumption would be that he is living with the Dush family. He would be listed as age 20-29. Still none could be found.
Mary b. 1833
John b. 1837

1850 census. This census would show the names of the children in the household. His wife Ruth Fowler Elben would not have died until 1852. In the household would be the following children; however, none can be found in any 1850 census:

John b. 1837
George b. 1842
Levi b. 1844
Rufus b. 1844
Willis b. 1846
Amanda b. unk
Annabel b. unk.
Caroline b. 1852?
