4.1 William Elben, b. 1819 in Pennsylvania or in England, m. Mary Catherine Deal on 28 May 1856 in Fredericktown, Knox Co., OH, at age 14.

This William may be the same one who was actually born ca. 1811. See William Elben of Ohio.

WilliamÕs desire to move to Fredericktown could have been the mill and growth in 1853 due to the railroad that came thru the village from Sandusky, Mansfield, and Newark. The Fredericktown Grain Elevator below was the site of the first mill.

Marriage

William m. Mary Catherine Deal on 28 May 1856 in Fredericktown, Knox Co., OH; she was age 14. Mary Catherine Deal was b. 28 Feb 1842 in Martinsburg, Knox Co., OH, and died 21 Jun 1916.

As William was 37 at this marriage, he may have had an earlier marriage in OH, see William Elben of Ohio.

After William died on 28 Sep 1873 in Utica, Licking Co., OH, and left Mary Catherine Deal Elben with 5 children, ages 2-16, she m. George Benton McLaughlin on 4 Mar 1885. George had first married Amanda Dickerson in 1862 in OH, and she died prior to 1885 in Knox Co., OH, and is buried at the Forest Cemetery in Fredericktown, Knox Co., OH.

George and Amanda had daughter Eva F. McLaughlin, 1863-1899, who married Floyd Elben, the son of Mary Catherine Deal and William Elben. See Floyd.

The spelling on the headstone is incorrect; she was the wife of George Benton McLaughlin (with an ÒaÓ instead of an ÒoÓ) and is buried at the Forest Cemetery in Fredericktown, Knox Co., OH. George Benton McLaughlin was b. 2 Mar 1843 in OH, the son of Thomas McLaughlin and Margaret Wilson, and d. 7 May 1925 in Utica, Licking Co., OH, and is buried at the Forest Cemetery in Fredericktown, Knox Co., OH.

Census

1820 census – should show a family with a male under 5 in PA, but none. He may be the William that shows in the 1820 census of Falls, Muskingum Co., OH, born 1810-1820. See William Elben of Ohio.

1830 census – should be age 11. Not listed unless name is spelled Albin.

1840 census – should be age 21. See Deal Family. As this Deal family lived in Darke Co., OH, they may not be the same family as Mary Catherine Deal was b. 28 Feb 1842 in Martinsburg, Knox Co., OH.

1850 census – this census shows Mary Deal living in Jackson, Darke Co., OH, age 8, living with her parents, Christopher Deal 45 born in Pennsylvania, and Susannah Deal 35 born in Ohio, and with their 10 children: George, Jacob M., Amos P., Barbara, John W., Mary, Sarah, Catharine, William C., and Samuel G. Deal. WeÕre not sure this is the correct Mary Deal, but the name, birthdate, and place are correct. See Deal Family. Looking at the names in this list, one wonders where the Elben family came up with their childrenÕs names Francis, Scott, Floyd, Milford, Granville, and Alice.

1850 census – ÒaÓ Mary C. Deal shows in the 1850 census of Clay, Knox Co., OH, age 11, born in 1839. She is living with her father Henry Deal, 49 who was a pedlar, born in Maryland. All others listed were born in Ohio: Rhoda A. 29, Sarah A. 20, Mary C. 11, Lorenzo R. 4.

1860 census – should be here with children Francis 3 and Scott 1. Cannot find.

1870 census of Morgan, Knox Co., OH, William is age 51, b. 1819 in OH, living with his wife Mary who is 32 or born in 1838, and children Francis 13, Scott 11, Floyd 9, Milford 7, and Granville 3. The birthdates of both William and Mary seem quite off.

1880 census of Utica, Licking Co., OH, Mary C. Elben is widowed, b. 1841, age 39, living with children Scott 21, Floyd 19, Alice 9, and daughter-in-law Mary H. 17.

As the father of these children, William Elben, died on 28 Sep 1873 in Utica, Licking Co., OH, his youngest child was only 2 years old and the oldest was 16; therefore, they may never have really known him as their father, but considered George Benton McLaughlin as their father, and he was born in Ohio, and MaryÕs father was born in Pennsylvania. The youngest child, Alice, consistently stated that both her parents were born in Ohio.

In this 1880 census, the children state where their father was born (none state Maryland); all said Ohio except Mary who states England. In the 1900 census, Scott states his father was born in Pennsylvania; in the 1910 census Scott states England; in the 1920 census, Scott states Pennsylvania; in the 1930 census he states Pennsylvania. In the 1880 census, Floyd states Ohio, in 1900 he states Ohio, in 1910 he states Ohio. In the 1880 census, Frank states his father was born in Ohio. In the 1920 census, Milford states his father was born in the U.S. Grantville states in the 1900 census his father was from Pennsylvania; in the 1910 census from England; in the 1920 census from England. From this variety of places, I would say that their fatherÕs origin was England, that he was born in Pennsylvania, and that the children were born in Ohio.

1900 census of Washington, Licking Co., OH, Mary C. McLaughlin was 56 or born in Feb 1844 in OH. She is living with George B. McLaughlin, 56, and with their grandson Dail (Dale Arthur) Elben, 17, b. Aug 1882 in OH, son of Floyd.

1910 census of Washington, Licking Co., OH, George is 66, b. 1844 in OH, and Mary C.

Deal Family

1850 census – this census shows Mary Deal in Jackson, Darke Co., OH, age 8, living with her parents, Christopher Deal 45 farmer born in Pennsylvania, and Susannah Deal 35 born in Ohio, and with their 10 children, all born in Ohio, which means this family lived in Ohio at least by 1832, and should therefore be in the 1840 census:
Christopher Deal 45 PA
Susannah Deal 35 OH, formerly Susannah Metzger
George 17, b. ca. 1833 OH
Jacob M. 15 OH
Amos P. 13 OH
Barbara 12 OH
John W. 10 OH
Mary 8 OH
Sarah 4 OH
Catharine 4 OH
William C. 3 OH
Samuel G. 1 OH
WeÕre not sure this is the correct Mary Deal, but the name, birthdate, and place are correct.

Also in this 1850 census of Jackson, Darke Co., OH, is Christopher DealÕs father, Paul Deal Sr., age 78, b. ca. 1772 in Pennsylvania, married to Mary Deal 72. Paul Deal Sr. also appears in the 1820 census of Newberry, Miami Co., OH with a family of 12. Paul owns 80 acres of land West of the Greater Miami in Darke Co., OH, on 10 Oct 1840. He is listed as Paul Deal Senior. Paul Deal Jr. is listed in the 1850 census of Jackson, Darke Co., OH, as born in 1815, living with his wife Anna Deal 30, and children Lavina 14, Christopher 13, John 11, George 9, David 8, Elizabeth 6, and Isaac 2.

1840 census – Christopher Deal lives in Washington, Darke Co., OH, with a family of 6:
1 male under 5, Amos
2 males 5-9, George and Jacob
1 male 30-39, Christopher Deal
1 female under 5, Barbara
1 female 30-39, Susannah Deal

Christopher Deal also spelled his name Dale, Diel, and Diehl. He was born 10 May 1805 in Somerset, PA, and d. 9 Apr 1876 in Licking, Blackford Co., IN, where he appears in the 1860 census. For more on this family, see http://trees.ancestry.com/tree/11816305/person/-384590572. This genealogy, however, states that Mary Deal m. Joseph J. Stormer on 18 Jun 1867 in Delaware, IN, at age 25, which seems to be a more reasonable age than marrying William Elben at age 14.

Possibilities Ruled Out for Mary Deal

Another possibility for Mary Deal would be the German spelling ÒMary DielÓ born in 1842. This Diel family emigrated from Germany to Antwerp, Belgium and then to New York arriving on the ship ÒGene TaylorÓ on 26 Dec 1846 when Mary was only 4. The family included:
A. Diel 33   b. 1813
Cath Diel 37
Anna Diel 6
Mary Diel 4
Barb Diel 3
This information is kept here for further research, but we believe this family came from Pennsylvania.

The Deal Family of Salem Co., NJ
The Deal Family has an area of gravestones in the Olivet Cemetery in Pittsgrove, Salem Co., NJ, among the 1,497 interments. Among Deal members buried here are Charles, Christeen, Elizabeth, George H., Jane, John H. Joseph H., Kate L, Peter, and Sarah. The Elben name does not appear in this cemetery, although Salem Co., NJ, was a town where the Elben family was prominent. We are unsure whether our Deal family came from NJ or not.

Fifth Generation

Children of William Elben and Mary Catherine Deal, 4.1

Research to Study – it may not be true: WilliamÕs first wife died on 18 Feb 1852 and William remarried Mary Catherine Deal on 28 May 1856, all in Ohio. William died by the 1880 census. These children all said their father was born in Ohio; Mary H. Elben was a daughter-in-law.

Because this could have been a second marriage, the children may not have known where their father was born. See William Elben of Ohio. However, that William of Ohio was born in either Maryland or Delaware.

This family migrated to various states and counties:

Morgan, Knox Co., OH
Albert Lea, Freeborn Co., MN
Washington, Licking Co., OH
Fredericktown, Knox Co., OH
Marengo City, Iowa
Aurora, Hamilton Co., NE
Columbus, Franklin Co., OH
Martinsburg, Knox Co., OH

Anthony, born in 1854, living with their son Hugh Elben, age 2, born in 1878. In the 1870 census of Morgan, Knox Co., OH, Francis was single and living with his siblings Scott, Floyd, Milford, and Granville. He d. 14 Jul 1917 in Knox Co., OH.

William was a widower at the time of his death and had been a glass worker. The Knox County Ohio Genealogical Society states that he married Eliza Anthony on 4 Oct 1876 in Licking Co., OH, and had son Hugh Elben in 1878. The 1851 birthdate of this son was during his first marriage and before his second marriage in 1856.

In the 1920 census, Scott Elben, b. 1862 in OH, living with his wife Della in Albert Lea Ward 2, Freeborn Co., MN, same age. Scott states that his father was born in Pennsylvania and his mother in Ohio. Perhaps previously he meant that his father was of English ancestry.
