Children of Wilbur E. Elburn Sr. and Edith M. Townsend, 6.13

Synopsis of this Family by Joan Elburn Farley on 1 Jun 2014:

Wilbur married later in life as he was born on 13 Apr 1887. He married his brotherÕs widow after his brother Henry had died in 1921. He m. Edith M. Townsend on 5 Sep 1921 in St. Joseph, Berrien Co., MI, according to Michigan Marriages 1868-1925. Edith was b. 6 Sep 1897 in Cass Co., IN, the daughter of Elijah and Ida (Dillman) Townsend. She had m1. Henry Elburn in 1913; Henry died in 1921; Edith m2. HenryÕs brother Wilbur in 1921; Wilbur died in 1929; Edith m3. HenryÕs and WilburÕs half brother William Confer in 1929.

Edith M. TownsendÕs father, Elijah Townsend, was born in Feb 1858, and her mother Ida Dillman was born in Oct 1866 according to the 1900 census of Jefferson, Miami Co., IN. Elijah and Ida were married in 1885. Wilbur died on 18 Feb 1939 in Mexico, Cass Co., IN. Wilbur and his 3 children were living with EdithÕs parents, Labon and Minnie (Smith) Elburn Confer in the 1920 census because Edith had left her second husband and their children and married for the third time, that being to William R. ÒWillieÓ Confer, the son of Labon and Minnie Smith Elburn Confer and the half-brother of her first two husbands, Henry and Wilbur Elburn, on 25 May 1929 in Allen, IN.

William and Edith Townsend Elburn Confer had 3 children: Melvin Ray Confer, Billy Gene Confer, and Carl Confer. In the 1930 census, where husband #2 and children are living with the Confers, William and Edith Confer along with son Ray (the only child born at this date) and EdithÕs 70-year old uncle, Peter Dillman, are living in Miami, IN. In the 1940 census, William and Edith Confer, Thurman Curtis Elburn (marriage #1), Charles Wayne Elburn (marriage #2), Melvin Ray Confer (marriage #3) and Billy Gene Confer (marriage #3) are also living in Miami, IN. Son Carl Confer was born and died in 1931. When Edith Townsend Elburn Confer died, her obituary only lists 2 husbands, Henry Elburn and William Confer. She does however list a daughter from the second and ignored marriage: Mrs. Ruth Beck is Ruth Arlene Elburn, daughter of Wilbur Elburn. The other 2 children from her second marriage preceded her in death: Wilbur Junior Elburn died in 1942 and Charles Wayne Elburn died in 1963. One of her children from marriage #3 also is omitted from her obituary: Carl Confer who died in 1931.

Edith Marie Townsend was married 3 times to all 3 sons of Minnie Smith Elburn Confer: 2 brothers and a half-brother. Between the 3 marriages, she had a total of 9 children:

1) Henry Elburn (Samuel J. Elburn and Minnie Smith) – 27 Apr 1913.

a. Lucille R. Elburn

b. Edna Olive Elburn

c. Thurman Curtis Elburn

2) Wilbur Elburn (Samuel J. Elburn and Minnie Smith) – 6 Sep 1921.

a. Ruth Arlene Elburn

b. Charles Wayne Elburn

c. Wilbur Junior Elburn

3) William R. Confer (Labon Confer and Minnie Smith Elburn) – 25 May 1929.

a. Melvin Ray Confer

b. Carl Confer

c. Billy Gene Confer

Confer 53, and with his father Wilbur E. Confer Sr. 45. Also living with the family are CharlesÕ siblings Ruth and Wilbur Confer Jr. d. 16 Dec 1963 age 39 of diabetics complications (Type II).

Charles Wayne Elburn is listed in the 1940 census of Peru, Miami Co., IN, age 15, the step-son of William Confer and the son of Edith Townsend Elburn Confer from her marriage to Wilbur Elburn. Furthermore, Thurman Curtis Elburn is in this census as a step-son of William Confer; his parents were Henry Elburn and Edith Townsend Elburn. This is quite an important census record as it definitely proves that Edith Townsend had married 3 brothers: Henry, Wilbur, and William, although William was a half brother; his mother was Minnie M. Smith (same mother as for Wilbur and Henry) but his father was Labon Confer, not Samuel Elburn. At this census, EdithÕs daughter Ruth (by Wilbur) was married and listed in another household, and her son Wilbur Jr. (by Wilbur) was in a deaf institute where he died shortly thereafter. EdithÕs children with Henry Elburn (Lucille, Edna, Thurman) were all older as Henry was her first husband. Edith and William (the third brother who was a half brother because his father was Labon Confer whereas the other sonsÕ father was Samuel Elburn) had 2 more children: Melvin Ray Confer b. 8 May 1929 and Billy Gene Confer b. 10 Jun 1936, both of whom are also in this 1940 census.

Charles m. Mary Etta Beall and had daughter Linda Louise Elburn on 5 Mar 1947 in Logansport.

Statue of captain honors watermen's way of life Unveiling celebrated in Rock Hall harbor

By Ed Brandt and Ed Brandt, SUN STAFF | October 8, 1995

ROCK HALL -- One man's solemn tribute to a declining way of life was unveiled yesterday in this small Eastern Shore town. A 16-foot-high statue of Capt. Stanley Vansant, who spent most of his 81 years as a waterman and master boat builder, will stand at water's side in Rock Hall harbor as a reminder of days gone by, but it won't be the only reminder. Hundreds of the 3,000 work- and head-boats he built still work Chesapeake Bay and its quiet coves and harbors. "If this were Japan, Captain Vansant would be a national treasure," said sculptor Kenneth Herlihy, creator of the bronze statue, which shows the captain tonging for oysters.
