From the Brooklyn New York Daily Eagle, 13 Sep 1920. His daughter Eva French was appointed Postmistress at Sag Harbor in May 1889 after HannibalÕs death.

Marriage

Arthur m. Anna (Annie) L. Buckley in 1877 and later moved to Brooklyn. Anna was b. 1853, d. 1923. AnnaÕs parents were born in England and her mother was living with her in the 1900 census, age 75. Her brother, William Buckley, m. Ada Dewey and had daughter Julie Buckley. Arthur and Anna French had son A. Percy, 1879-1908.

1870 census – Arthur is age 20 and living with his parents and siblings in Sag Harbor.

1877 – Arthur m. Anna (Annie) L. Buckley.

1880 census – Arthur is age 30 with his wife Annie, age 26, and son Arthur Percy French age 1 living in East Hampton, Suffolk Co., NY.

1900 census – Arthur is 49, living with his mother-in-law Ann Buckley 75, his wife Anna 47, his son Percy 21 (born May 1879), and Mary Hanley 36, a maid, in Brooklyn Ward 23, Kings County, NY.

1910 census – Arthur was age 60 living in Brooklyn Ward 23, Kings County, NY, married to Anna L. French, age 57. They had servant Catherine Sheild born in Ireland.

1916 – Arthur died at age 66.

3.3 Blanche Hedges French, b. 8 Jan 1851, Sag Harbor, Suffolk Co., LI, NY, d. 1918, Sag Harbor, Suffolk Co., LI, NY (age 66 years). She m1. Samuel Huntting Sherry (brother of Mary Sherry who married Peter French) and had 2 daughters, Mary and Blanche. She m2. George Morton Travis, b. 1866, d. 1936.

3.4 Hannibal French, Jr., b. 5 Jul 1852, Sag Harbor, Suffolk Co., LI, NY, d. 1933 (age 80 years) and is buried at the Oakland Cemetery in Sag Harbor. In 1899 Hannibal and his brother Henry were former directors of the Montauk Steamboat Company.

Marriage

Hannibal married Emily Goodale Myers (maiden name Emily J. Van Etten, 1851-1941) who has a Memorial Cemetery dedicated to her called the Emily F. French Memorial Cemetery, located on Thomas Street, east of Route 114, North Ferry Rd., Shelter Island, Suffolk County, NY. Cemetery notes and/or description:

Memorial Park named after Emily Goodale Myers French who was born in Southampton in 1849, married first Theodore Myers, married second Captain Hannibal French. The Myers family purchased the land for the cemetery. Emily died in 1932 and was apparently moved from the Presbyterian cemetery to the new memorial cemetery. Her family plot is in the middle.

1880 census – Living in Sag Harbor with his parents and siblings.

1897 – Hannibal m. Emily Goodale Myers. Emily was 45 years of age at this second marriage. No French heirs.

1900 census – Living in Brooklyn Ward 30, Kings County, NY, married to Emily in 1897. Hannibal was 47 and Emily was 48. They were living with 4 members of the Myers family who were EmilyÕs children by her first marriage to Myers: Charles Y. Myers 24, Lucille F. Myers 19, Francis A. Myers 15, and Virginia M. Myers 13. Also, 3 boarders were living with them.

1930 census – Hannibal was age 77, the uncle of George M. Travis and Blanche S. (French) Travis who were head of household, living with several borders on South oxford Street in Brooklyn, Kings County, NY. Hannibal was clerk in an insurance company.

1933 – Hannibal died. Buried at the Oakland Cemetery, Sag Harbor, in the same area are: Wade French, Harriet Wade French, Frank C. 3.5* Frank Conrad French, b. 3 Jul 1854, Sag Harbor, Suffolk Co., LI, NY, d. 1927, Sag Harbor, Suffolk Co., LI, NY (age 72 years). Frank was a purser aboard the steamship ÒShinnecockÓ named after an Indian Tribe descended from the historic Pequot and Narragansett people of southern New England. He and his wife were buried at Oakland Cemetery, Sag Harbor, Suffolk Co., NY.

Marriage

Frank m. Harriet Wade (1856-1928) in 1881, who was also from a whaling family. They had 3 children: Cornelia, Frances, and Wade. She was the daughter of Sarah Wade.

Chronology

1880 census – Frank is living with his parents and siblings in Sag Harbor. He states that his father was born in Orange County, NY and his mother in Moriches, and that he was a merchant.

1900 census – Frank (45) and Harriet (44) were living in East Hampton with their children Cornelia (7), Francis (4), and Wade (2).

1910 census – Frank (55) and Harriet (52) were living with their 3 children in East Hampton, Cornelia (17), Francis (13), and Wade (11).

1927 – Frank died and is buried in Sag Harbor.

1928 – FrankÕs wife Harriet died and is buried in Sag Harbor.

3.7 Henry French, b. 15 Oct 1858, Sag Harbor, Suffolk Co., LI, NY, d. 1925 (age 66 years). Henry worked in, but did not own the general store of H. & S. B. 1900 census – Henry (41) lived in Sag Harbor, Southampton township, Suffolk County, NY, married to Emma E (39). Both of their parents were both born in NY. Henry was a clerk. They were renting a house on Main St. near Glover St.

1910 census – Henry was 51 and Emma was 46, living in Brooklyn Ward 2, Kings County, NY, enumeration date 27 Jun 1910. Henry was a salesman of leather goods. They rented a house on Prospect St.

1922 Sep 3 – From the Brooklyn New York Daily Eagle.

1925 – Henry died.

3.10 Clara Slate French, b. 19 Jan 1858 in NY and living with her father in 1865 in New York after her mother had died. She m. Auguste Mathez, who was educated at Columbia and was a well-known mining engineer who traveled to many places in the world, including Peking on mining expedition. She died in El Paso, Texas and Auguste Mathez died in Denver, Colorado; both are buried in Denver. They had son Forrest Mathez who was educated at Colorado School of Mines and was a mining engineer in Utah. He later moved to Indian Wells, California [11] for many years with his sister, Claire Arkell and her husband James Arkell on a large property. Lived with his parents and siblings in the 1870 census of Sag Harbor, Suffolk Co., NY. Lived with parents and siblings in the 1880 census of NYC. See Ref. [11] in Bibliography at bottom of page. Most of this family and their ancestors and descendants were buried in Denver.

3.11 Forrest H. French, b. 20 xxx 1860 in NY, who died 27 Jun 1863, aged 3 years, 1 month, and 7 days. Not living with his father in the 1865 census of New York as he had died. The name Forrest came from his motherÕs surname Hand side of the family, Robert Forrest Hand, who was born 8 Nov 1797.

3.12* Eugene Smith French, b. 23 Jan 1862 in Sag Harbor, Suffolk County, NY, died on the field of Battle, at Calcocan, P.I. (Philippine Islands), on 23 Feb 1899, 3 years after his father died. He was age 37.

Eugene m. Frankie Reynolds ca. 1895 and had son Hallett R. French. She was born in 1871 in Wisconsin, dau. of Abert and Sarah Reynolds.

1895 Apr 24 – Married Frankie Reynolds at the First Baptist Church in Helena, Montana. She was born in 1871 in Wisconsin, dau. of Albert and Sarah Reynolds.

1896 Mar 14 – Son Hallett R. French was born in Helena, Lewis and Clark County, Montana.

1898 -- The Spanish-American War was short (April to August 1898) and relatively bloodless. In fact, the body count by the conclusion of hostilities was United States 2,664, Spain 5,500. The payoff was deemed worth it; the United States gained the Philippines, Guam, and Puerto Rico; the financial cost was a mere $20 million.

1899 Feb 23 -- Died on the field of Battle, at Caloocan, P.I. (Philippine Islands), on 23 Feb 1899, 3 years after his father died. He was age 37 and a Lieutenant. Caloocan was annexed by the United States during the war.

1900 census – Listed as Mrs. E. S. French, age 29, born Jan 1871 in Wisconsin, living in Helena Ward 7, Lewis and Clark County, Montana, widowed, states that both her parents were born in New York, had 1 child who she is living with, Hallett French, age 4, and living with her brother Dexter Reynolds and a servant Lena Bnor.

1910 census -- Helena, Lewis and Clark County, Montana, as Frankie French, b. 1871 in Wisconsin, dau. of Albert and Sarah Reynolds. She is listed as widowed. She is living with her parents, Albert Reynolds 62 and Sarah Reynolds 59, and her son Hallett French, 14.

1920 census – Frankie French is living on Blake St. in Helena Ward 7 with her mother and son, and she is widowed.

1928 Apr 12 – Frankie French died in Helena, Montana, and is buried at the Forestvale Cemetery.

3.15 Stephen B. French Jr., b. 23 Aug 1874 in NY, d. 3 Jan 1931, age 57. Never married.

1874 Aug 23 – Stephen B. French Jr. was born.

1880 census -- Lived with parents and siblings in NYC.

1899 -- In 1899 when his father died, Stephen Jr. was living at 166 York Street, New Haven, CT, shown below from a Google map with the address on the front door awning. Apparently the house on the left was torn down an apartment building built, so as to keep a photo of his house in case it also gets torn down, it is shown here.

1920 census – Oakland, Alameda Co., CA, lodger, age 45, single, states his father was born on Long Island and his mother in Connecticut, he was an Assistant Secretary at an Undertaker Company, living with the Hughes, Berry, Goodman, and Finigan families. He states that his father was born in Long Island and his mother in Connecticut.

1930 census – Oakland, Alameda Co., CA, lodger, lived at 501 21st St., was a salesman in real estate, lived with 17 others with the Nordstrum family.

1931 Jan 3 – Stephen dies at age 57 in CA but is buried in NY.
