Foreword

IÕve researched this line just about all I can from ancestry.com and from the internet. Additions need to come from family members or from local books or historians who havenÕt put their information online.

P.S. Although James W. French is not of my line, I will continue to do research on him as time permits. My line is FFA Chart #6.

History and Background

The research below shows how this line connects to FFA Chart #2. IÕve done most research on the earlier generations as the later generations can be easily found online. Although this is not my line, I will continue research on it as I have time.

George William French, b. 26 Jul 1819 in Bedford, Hillsborough Co., NH. A birth record for George William French on ancestry.com indicates he was born 21 Jan 1847 in Danvers, Essex Co., MA, the son of George William French who was a Trader, and Mary Ann Tapley. Looking further online, Mary Ann Tapley was b. 22 Mar 1818 in Danvers, Essex Co., MA, the dau. of Daniel and Sally (Nourse) Tapley. She m. George William French on 16 Nov 1843 in Danvers, Essex Co., MA. Because the children of the first generation (James W. French and Ellen N. French) were born before this marriage, it may indicate that the marriage to Mary Ann Tapley was a second marriage for George William French. Several incidences tie these two families together:

1.    James W. French (b. 1839) lived with George W. French (born 1847) in 1850 and 1860 in MA.

2.    George W. French (b. 1847) and James W. French (b. 1839) both state that their father was born in NH and their mother in MA.

3.    George W. French (b. 1819) and George W. French (b. 1847) have the same names.

The 1870 census shows George W. French, b. 1819, living in Danvers, Essex, MA with his wife and 7 children including George W. French but no James or Ellen. James would have been 31 years old and already married. Ellen would have also been older. Perhaps EllenÕs mother died in childbirth; this is only an assumption. Ellen is listed in the 1850 and 1860 census of Lowell, Middlesex Co., MA.

The 1850 census states that George W. French (his father born in 1818 in NH) was also living with his parents at the time: Isaac Parker French age 59 (b. 1791), and Clarissa B. French age 54 (b. 1796). Looking further into Isaac, he was b. ca. 1791 in Bedford and d. 1867 at age 76, and his wife was Clarissa Barnes. They had children Charles French (1823 in Lyndsborough, Hillsborough Co., NH), David Patten French (1 Feb 1817), and George William French (25 Jul 1819). Isaac m. Clarissa on 26 Mar 1815.

Another search shows that Isaac Parker French was the son of David and Lydia (Parker) French, and DavidÕs parents were William French who m. Tabitha Pierce. David was b. 15 Sep 1754 in Billerica, MA. He died 13 Jun 1790 in Bedford, Hillsborough Co., NH. Lydia was b. 1758 and d. 8 Apr 1793. They had children David French, b. 13 Aug 1778; Josiah French, b. 13 Feb 1780; John French b. 31 Dec 1781 in Hollis, Hillsborough Co., NH; Lydia b. 24 May 1784; Hannah b. 28 Feb 1786 in Lyndsborough, Hillsborough Co., NH; and Isaac Parker, b. 1790.

David French (b. 1754) was the son of William French (25 Jan 1713 in Billerica, d. 1793 in Bedford, NH) and Tabitha Pierce (b. 28 Feb 1716 in Chelmsford, MA, and d. 28 Mar 1793, married in Apr 1736 in Chelmsford, Middlesex Co., MA).

William French (b. 1713) was the son of William French (b. 8 Aug 1687 in Billerica, MA, d. 25 Feb 1745 in Billerica, MA) and Rebecca Paine (b. 1691 in Dedham, Norfolk Co., MA). They had 7 children.

William French (b. 1687) was the son of John French (b. 16 Mar 1640 in Cambridge, MA, d. 20 May 1713 in Billerica, MA). His first wife was Hannah Burrage (b. 14 Dec 1643 in Charlestown, MA, d. 7 Jul 1667 in Billerica, MA, m. 3 Jul 1662 in Billerica). His second wife was Mary Champney (b. Nov 1639 in Cambridge, MA, d. 1 Apr 1681, m. 20 Sep 1665 in Cambridge, MA). William had 12 children with 2 wives. The first wife he had 2, and then 10 with the second wife, including William of this line.

William French (b. 1640) was the son of William French the emigrant, b. 1606 in Halstead, Essex, England. See FFA Chart #2 and the England side of this line, FFA Chart #E2, which shows this line connects back with the other DNA testees of DNA Test Group 6. First Generation

1.1* James W. French (Jas W. French), b. 1839 in MA. The ÒWÓ may stand for Wymond or William.

James French m. Carie (Caroline) M. Hauck in Lawrenceburg, IN on 29 Sep 1863 [1]. Carie was b. ca. 1842 in IN and lived in 1850 in Lawrenceburg, IN, with her mother Joanna J. Hauck (34, born in Germany), Anna M. Hauck (31, born in Germany), John Hauck (14, born in IN), Jacob Hauck (11, born in IN), Mary Hauck (5, born in IN), and Henrietta Hauck (3, born in IN). The Hauck family of Lawrenceburg, IN, were John, George, and Jacob Hauck who originated from Steinweller, Germany.

James W. French was a Colonel in military and became disabled.

In the 1840 census, Joseph M. and Thomas Leggett were living in Charlemont, Franklin Co., MA.

In the 1850 census of Leominster, Worcester Co., MA, James W. was 11 years old living with his brother George W. French, age 2, with their ancestors William M. Leggett, age 64, and Nancy Leggett, age 58. It seems quite evident that someone happened to the parents of James and George by 1850. Perhaps these two boys were orphaned brothers.

In the 1850 census, Clarinda Legate was age 29 living with Ellen N French age 9, and George W. French age 2 in Lowell, Middlesex, MA, probably in a boarding home with 11 others, while James was living elsewhere as mentioned above.

By 1860 when James was 21, he was living probably in a boarding house with about 30 others in Lowell, Middlesex Co., MA. Among the recognizable names are Clarinda Legate age 41, Ellen N. French age 18 (probably his sister), and his brother George W. French age 12. All the 30 children were between 18 and 25, so I assume it was an orphanage. The head of the orphanage was Clarinda Legate (41) who was probably part of the Leggett family mentioned in the 1850 census below. It is likely that both his parents died between 1849-1850.

By 1863 James married Carie M. Hauck in Lawrenceburg, IN, on 29 Sep 1863.

In 1864 son Edwin was born in Lawrenceburg, Dearborn Co., IN.

In 1865 James and Carie divorced.

In 1880 lived in Detroit, Pike Co., IL, living with Caroline Leggett b. in IN

In 1887 James lived in the U.S. National Home for Disability Volunteer Soldiers, admitted in 1887 at age 47 in Grant, Marion Co., IN. James Leggett of Leavenworth, KS, was his nearest relative, his uncle. He was discharged from the home on 1 Jun 1899

In the 1910 census, James W. French appears as age 70, born ca. 1840 in MA, his father was born in NH and his mother in MA. James is listed in 1910 living in Danville, Vermilion Co., IL, married, but not living with his wife, but with about 30 other people, no names recognizable.

In the 1910 census of Indianapolis, Marion Co., IN, Caroline French is widowed, age 73, born 1837 in IN, living with Andrew and Ida Trill, relations from Germany.

1.2 Ellen N. French, b. ca. 1841-42.

1.3 George W. French, b. 21 Jan 1847, lived with his brother James in Lowell Ward 1, Middlesex Co., MA in 1860 at which time he was 12. It is assumed that both of their parents died between 1849-1850 and these 2 brothers lived with the Leggett family.

They had children Charles French (1823 in Lyndsborough, NH), David Patten French (1 Feb 1817), and George William French (25 Jul 1819). Isaac m. Clarissa on 26 Mar 1815.

By 1860 when James was 21, he was living probably in a boarding house with about 30 others in Lowell, Middlesex Co., MA. Among the recognizable names were Clarinda Legate age 41, Ellen N.

In the 1880 census, George W. French was living in Massachusetts, age 33, b. ca. 1847, stating that this father was born in NH and his mother in MA – this would indicate he is the possible son of this line. While his brother James moved to IN, he stayed in MA. He was married to Clara and had children Ernest W. age 7, Arthur T. age 6, Clara M. age 4, Philip R. age 3, and Helen M. age 1.

In the 1900 census, George was living in Boston, Suffolk Co., MA, age 52, b. Jan 1848 in MA, his father born in NH and his mother in MA, married to Clara H. French in 1971, living with their children: Arthur T. age 26, Clara M. age 24, Philip R. age 23.

In the 1910 census, George was living in Boston with Clara and Helen M. age 34, and George W age 23.

1.4 Sarah N. French, b. ca. 1849 in NH.

1.5 Arthur E. French, b. ca. 1851 in NH.

1.6 Mary W. French, m. ca. 1853 in NH.

1.7 Roland B. French, b. ca. 1856 in NH.

1.8 Annie T. French, b. ca. 1859 in NH (twin).

1.9 Clara S. French, b. ca. 1859 in NH (twin).

Second Generation

Children of James W. and Carie M. (Hauck) French, 1.1

2.1 Edwin Johan French, b. 18 Jul 1864 in Lawrenceburg, Dearborn Co., IN, m. Laura Harding Wymond on 28 Mar 1894 [1]. Edwin was a dentist. The Wymond family was from England, but Laura was born in Indiana.

In the 1870 census of Washington, Harrison Co., IN, Edwin was 5 years old living with Hugh French (49) b. ca. 1821 in IN (a physician) and his wife Rhode (32) b. ca. 1838 in IN; and children Clarance (15), Ada (11), Laffayatt (7), Anie K. (8/12), and Daniel (70). It is assumed that this French family were relatives, but not ErwinÕs immediate family, because 10 years later, Edwin was only 16 and living with another family. In the 1860 census of New Amsterdam, Harrison Co., IN, Ada was 3, b. ca. 1857 in IN, living with her father Hugh French (39), Rhoda (27), and siblings Laura (8), Clarence (5), and Benjamin (5/12). Ada doesnÕt show up in the 1880 census probably because she got married and shows up under that surname. In the 1880 census, Hugh (59), Rhoda (55), Addie (21), Lafayette (17), Edwin (14), and Anna (10) are living in Washington, Harrison Co., IN.

In the 1880 census of Lawrenceburg, Dearborn Co., IN, Edwin was only 16 years old and living with the Houck family: Abenwick Houck who was his grandmother (60, widowed, born in Germany), and children Henrietta Houck (25), Emma C. Houck (23), and Warren N. Houck (20), all born in IN.

Underground Railroad: The Wymond house (formerly the Dearborn Country Club), located in Aurora, was a station on the Underground Railroad, which moved escaped slaves to the North. In Lawrenceburg, many of those involved were free African-American like Elijah Anderson, a blacksmith who dedicated his life to helping escaped slaves. He once estimated that he had helped about 1,000 slaves en route to freedom. Anderson was eventually arrested for his activities, which were illegal under the Fugitive Slave Law. He later died in a Kentucky prison.

In the 1900 census, Edwin J. French was 35, born Jul 1864, living in Lawrenceburg, Dearborn Co., IN, was married to Laura W. in 1894, living with 4 of their children, the twins were just born.

In the 1910 census, Edwin was 45 living with his wife and 5 children mentioned above.

In the 1920 census, Dr. Edwin French was age 55 and living in Lawrenceburg, Dearborn Co., IN, widowed, indicating that his father was born in MA and his mother in IN. He was living with the children mentioned above.

Many members of the Wymond family lived in Lawrenceburg, Dearborn Co., IN.

Administered by Julia French Wood. For any questions regarding DNA, please email Julia at juliaFWood@aol.com.

A good source for research would be for a male with the surname French of this line to take the DNA test. It is a simple test that doesnÕt involve blood. A kit is delivered to your house with special brushes for you to take cheek swabs and the tip is injected into the tiny test tubes to be returned to the lab. After the tests that you ordered are completed, in about 4 weeks, you will be notified and can log in to your personal page at the company to view your results and your DNA matches. They may match up with one of the tests shown here: http://www.familytreedna.com/public/french/default.aspx?section=yresults. The FamilyTree DNA website gives a special lower price to those with the surname French. Read about those who approve of it: http://www.familytreedna.com/testimonials.aspx. To get the discounted price for our French DNA Project group, go to http://small-stuff.com/FRENCH/DNA/ and click at the left on "Join the French DNA Project" then place your order. Julia French Wood suggests the 37 marker test (Y-DNA37), but if you want to start with 25, you can upgrade to a higher test at a later date if needed.

DNA Tester for DNA Group 6 – this line ties back to William French of Billerica, MA, and Halstead, Essex, England. Administered by Julia French Wood. For any questions regarding DNA, please email Julia at juliaFWood@aol.com.

It is always nice to know that the DNA system really works. This line beginning with the first generation seemed impossible to find because young ones were living in an orphanage, but thru persistent research, everyone was able to connect them.
