Johnny Walker of the French line was always searching for Electra Jane French who married a Nelson and moved to Starks, LA. I visited TaylorÕs Bayou across the bridge. To get to the cemetery, go away from the Bayou on this same road to the first road by Smith Rice Dryer and turn right. Take the first road right again and it will curve left around a campground and to the cemetery right along the Bayou. Many of the French-related families lived in Fannett. From Hwy 10, go on 11th St. 4 miles to Hwy 124 and turn right. Drive 15 miles on Fannett Rd. and turn left where you see a church and school on Burnell-Wingate Rd. Go 6 miles. Rube Wingate lived on the left side of this road just before the ÒSÓ curve. Visit relatives at 16067 Burnell-Wingate Rd.

Trading Post area: Her mom and dad married there. Avie Butler was born there. David French was very old then and came to visit John E. French. The 2 houses faced each other. Four rooms were original in the front. The parlour was on the back with 3 bedrooms. It has a porch all away around, The boys had a big room upstairs which went upstairs off the porch outside. DavidÕs son, Theodore, lived in it and changed everything. Weir address = 2955. Could be off Diane St.

In 1842 a Connecticut trader arrived and linked his future with the destiny of Beaumont. When John Jay French, who came from a family of manufacturers, saw the thriving herds on the surrounding prairies, Òhe looked at the hides of the beeves and saw in them leather and jackets.Ó He established himself where oak (needed in tanning) was plentiful, and began buying cowhides; he also killed alligators and tanned their hides. The location he had chosen, though, containing only 3 houses, became known as French Town (on the present Voth Road). Hides were brought here from far-flung ranches, to be treated in the 14 vats of the tan yard, where the mill, driven by a plodding beast, was actually of one-horse power.
