I grew up in Nebraska, Iowa and Texas; both of my parents were born in Lincoln, NE.  My dadÕs parents both passed away before I was born, so I didn't get to know them as grandparents.  However, my dad was good about telling me about his family through the years, and this made them live for me. Back in 1966 my husband Ted and I were working in San Francisco, and Ted was sent back east on an engineering job that took about 6 weeks. I went out to spend a few days with him, and Dad encouraged us to drive across the Chesapeake and see what Elbourns we could find living in Rock Hall, Chestertown, and other areas of Kent County.  We did and found Elbourn to be a common name there (with spelling variations).

We met descendants of my grandfather's siblings who had remained in the Rock Hall - Chestertown area of Kent county. They were able to share stories of those they knew, and the previous generation were usually farmers or watermen.  We sat in the original farmhouse of my grandfather Elbourn's [I assume this is William Henry] oldest brother (deceased) [I assume this is Thomas James Elbourn] and talked with his wife [IÕm not sure whose wife was alive in 1966, but maybe she is talking about Thomas JamesÕ daughter, Edith Muriel, who married John Robert Batchelor; Edith did not die until 1970].  It was the first time I had seen a big wood-burning stove in the kitchen.  She was very old at the time, but had a good memory and told me how they had 14 children [IÕm not sure which family had 14 children; however, when Thomas died in 1932, Sarah remarried about 1940 his brother, John Wesley who had been married first to Nellie Catherine Burch, who died in 1939, so Sarah would have inherited the 7 children belonging to john Wesley and that would account for her 14], and how several of the children had died young from childhood diseases and one drowned [is she talking about Edith BatchelorÕs children as 3 of them died around a year old or less].  I asked where they were buried and she showed us a place on the farm where these young children were buried, and natural stones had been placed to mark where they were, but no identifying information.  She said back in the early days, if you lived on a farm and couldn't afford a funeral or burial, the family and friends would gather, read from the Bible, and bury the family member right there on the farm.  I took lots of notes and was able to make a trip to Annapolis to the Hall of Records and did find some early card catalog references to land owned and some regarding Oaths of Allegiance, and found a few Elbourns listed as serving in the Rev. War.

Fast forward to Ted and I and our children moving to Vienna, VA just west of Wash. DC in 1976 which was the first time we had lived anywhere in the East. I could go over to Annapolis and also to Baltimore to search more records.  I kept a research journal.  Then our family made a trip over to visit Elbourns who might still be over in Kent County.  Those who were still living hadn't moved and were happy to get re-acquainted.  Every time I talked with any of them, both back in 1966 and then again 10 years later, I always asked what they knew about when and who came to the USA.  There are 2 Elborn widows in the 1790 census of Kent Co., MD so we know they were there then.  I learned that the surname Elbourn, Elborn, Elbon, Elburn was found most frequently in Cambridgeshire, England.

None of these Elbourn relatives knew who the parents were of our great grandfather, Lemuel Joseph Elbourn b 5 Oct 1830 in Rock Hall, MD and who died 14 Oct 1879 in Rock Hall, MD.  He and my great grandmother, Sarah Catherine Benton b. 29 Jul 1836 in Piney Neck, Kent, MD and d. 1 Feb 1920 in Rock Hall, Kent, MD.  They had 7 children who all grew to adulthood and married and had children; 4 of them married, reared their children and died in or near Rock Hall; the other 3 left MD to go West. One of the 3 was my grandfather, William Henry Elbourn b. 2 Feb 1862 in Rock Hall, and 2 of his brothers, George Washington Elbourn and Charles Albert Elbourn. These 3 brothers stopped in Omaha, NE, met their wives there and remained there for several years.  Eventually, George Washington when back to CA with his wife and young children to where his wifeÕs family were. Charles Albert lived in Missouri and then went to Louisiana.  My grandfather, grandmother and their young family moved to Lincoln, NE and remained there.   IÕm quite sure our direct line family did not arrive in MD after coming in through Canada.  More common thinking was they possibly were 1st in Kent Co. Delaware and then on to Kent Co. MD; however, we don't have any written evidence of this.

In recent years since moving to AZ I've met another Elbourn on line who I was able to help with her Elbourn branch, and weÕve exchanged copies of records, research we've done and she has been putting some possible options together regarding the earliest Elbourns which you mention, namely William, John and Reuben.  I haven't seen Matthew and Nathaniel in the records weÕve found, but would be happy to learn more about them. You are the only person with the Elbon/Elben spelling who has contacted me.  We also know that many with the Elborn surname left England and went to Australia in the early 1800's but no one in our MD Elbourn families have any family members they know of who went from England to Australia; all we know of came to MD early and remained there. Those still living in Rock Hall - Chestertown in Kent Co. would also love to solve this Elbourn puzzle.

You didn't mention where home is for you.  Please keep in touch and let me know what you find.  I will take some time to take a look at the link you provide below tomorrow.

HereÕs a video of the steamboat ride from Baltimore to Tolchester in 1960:

How nice that someone took this video as it probably brings back good memories.

Also see the ÒTidewater Maryland, an Embayed Coast PlainÓ Thesis written in 1918 by Walter Lefferts for his PhD. It has a map of the steamboat routes between Baltimore and the Eastern Shore. It also shows the railroad routes and addresses the early road system (or lack thereof) and explains about how people between Chestertown and Rock Hall tended to travel by water rather than by land. ItÕs an interesting little bit of early shore life.
