Fifth Generation

Children of Lemuel Joseph Elburn and Sarah Catherine ÒKateÓ Benton, 4.5

The children of this couple were researched by Judy Elbourn Curtis. Judy further states that Lemuel had 8 children:

Thomas James Elbourn
Joseph Lemuel Elbourn
William Henry Elbourn
George Washington Elbourn
Mary Elizabeth Elbourn
John Wesley Elbourn
Nora Virginia ÒJennieÓ Elbourn
Charles Albert Elbourn (Elbourne)

Judy Elbourn Curtis was told years ago by an Elbourn that the oldest son was often named after both of his grandparents----therefore, Thomas James (first son) was named after his grandfathers Thomas Benton and James Elbourn. Just last month, Judy found a previously unknown daughter, Mary Elizabeth, b. 1869 (she is listed in the 1870 census as Mary E.). Since she was the first girl, the naming pattern continues – Mary Elizabeth is named after her grandmothers, Mary Rollison and Elizabeth Covington. For years Judy thought LemuelÕs father was probably James Jr. as he was born in 1804 and he and his wife Elizabeth Hague b. 1805 were married in 1826 in Kent, MD---they were the right age and in the right place. But when James Jr. moved to Indiana in 1838, he would have taken his children with him, and he did not take Lemuel who was only 8 years old as he was not his child. Further documents have been found that provide information on Sarah Jones to support her being the 2nd wife of James Elbourn Sr.

5.1* Thomas James ÒJames T.Ó Elbourn, b. 1 Dec 1858, Edesville, Kent, Maryland, d. 22 Sep 1932 in Rock Hall, Kent, MD. He m. Sarah Elizabeth Kendall on 18 Feb 1880, Rock Hall, Kent, MD. She was b. 20 May 1864, Harper's Ferry, Jefferson, WV, d. 12 Jul 1949, Rock Hall, Kent, MD, dau. of Stephen M. Kendall, b. abt 1840/1841, Kent, MD, d. 6 Feb 1899, Edesville, Kent, MD, and Anna Rebecca ÒAnnieÓ Birch, b. abt 1842-1845, ReeÕs Corner, Kent, MD, d. 21 Dec 1934, Rock Hall, Kent, MD. They were both buried at Wesley Chapel Cemetery in Rock Hall, MD. He was referred to as James T. in the 1860 census of District 1, Kent, MD. After Thomas died on 22 Sep 1921, Sarah Elizabeth Kendall married ca. 1940 to his brother, John Wesley Elburn, as John W.Õs wife died in 1939.

Occupation

Thomas bought a schooner ÒMattie L. FordÓ in 1910 for $100, a 38-year old vessel. The Chesapeake Bay is famous for its skipjacks, but they were a lighter and faster boat; the schooner would be more adapted to the hauling of freight (from Joan Elburn Farley).

Description: Macintosh HD:Users:Mara:Desktop:image003.jpg

Joseph L. Mulford was born on 24 Sep 1844 in Bridgetown, Cumberland, NJ, exactly the same town where another large Elbourn family lived, spelling their name Elben, and matching most other DNA results. Bridgetown is where he bought the vessel.

The ÒMattie L. FordÓ was 32 tons, 20 net tons, 56.2Õ L by 19.1Õ W by 5Õ D. It had a crew of 3, built in 1872 in Bridgetown, Cumberland, NJ. The home port where the schooner had permanent documents issued was in Baltimore, MD. From the ÒCongressional Serial SetÓ by the US Government Printing Office, 1911. The vessel ÒOxfordÓ is not listed here.

Children

There were 14 children born to the marriage of Thomas James and Sarah E. (Kendall) Elbourn. Only 4 grew to adulthood, married and had children. Remaining infants and children died young, some names unknown. (Information provided to Judy Elbourn Curtis by Edith Muriel (Elbourn) Batchelor in 1967).

Note: Brother to Thomas James Elbourn, Joseph Lemuel ElbournÕs wife (of the 5th generation), Harriet Elizabeth Beck Elbourn, died on 22 Mar 1900 leaving 5 young children in the 6th generation (Mary Virginia Elbourn, Arraminta Elbourn, Sarah Catherine Elbourn, Joseph Owen Elbourn, and Elijah Washington Elbourn). Joseph Lemuel ElbornÕs brother, Thomas James Elbourn (5.1, generation 5) and his wife Sarah Elizabeth Kendall, raised these children along with their already large family of 14; their children were born 1881-1905, and Joseph Lemuel ElbournÕs 5 children were born 1887-1898. This would indicate that many of these children would be living together in the 1910 census, so be aware to differentiate who they are.

*SarahÕs age has consistently been variable.

1880 census -- Thomas was age 22, a farm laborer, married to Sarah E., age 16, and living at Swan Creek Neck, Kent, MD. By the next year, they had their first child.

1900 census -- of Edesville, Kent, MD, Thomas and Sarah have 3 children: Annie B. Elburn, 11 (b. Jul 1888); Purnell J. Elburn 5 (actually 7, born 28 Aug 1893); and Myrtle E. Elburn 5 (Edith Muriel b. 1 Mar 1895). Their daughter Sarah E. who was born Nov 1883 had died on 8 Dec 1898 before this census. Their dau. Blanche, who was b. ca. 1896, also died in 1898, as well as 5 others before 1900.

1910 census -- of Edesville, Kent, MD. Ancestry.com has this census indexed as Ellman, but the original looks clear to me as Elburn, which should be Elbourn. Thomas is 52, born 1858, stating his wife is Sarah E., age 46, and they are living with Connell J. 17 (should be Purnell), Edith M. 15, Thomas B. (Thomas Bennett) 8, and George W. (George Washington), 5. It states that Sarah had a total of 14 children and that only 4 are still living, those 4 listed in this census. Thomas was a fisherman along with son Purnell. Edith was a seamstress in a factory. The name Connell J. must have been entered incorrectly as it should be Purnell Jump (Jump was a surname of a family in the area at that time).

1920 census -- of Edesville, Kent, MD, Thomas James Elbourn is 61, a waterman on the Chesapeake Bay, and married to Sarah E. (Kendall), 56, living with their children Merrill E. (Edith Muriel) 20, Thomas Bennett 17, and George Washington 14. Also living with them is ThomasÕ widowed mother, Sarah C. Downey, 83, telling us that his mother remarried after his father Lemuel Joseph Elbourn had died in 1879. Sarah m. Charles Downey in 1883.

1930 census -- of Edesville, Kent, MD, Thomas J. Elbourn was 71 living with his wife Sarah E. Elbourn, 65. They were living alone, and Thomas died 22 Sep 1932.

1940 census -- of Kent, MD, living on Gratitude Rd, is Sarah E. Elbourn, age 74, b. 1866, living with John W. Elbourn, age 69, born Aug 1873, who is her first husbandÕs brother. She was JohnÕs second marriage after his wife had died on 1 Mar 1939. John died 25 Nov 1948 and Sarah died 12 Jul 1949, but she was buried with her first husband.

Death

Joan Elburn Farley has in her possession the death certificate of Thomas James Elbourn, male, white, was married at the time of his death, died 22 Sep 1932 of Diabetes Mellitus which he had for the last 3 years of his life. He was a waterman and worked 60 years in that occupation until 1919. He was born in Piney Neck; his father is Lemuel Joseph Elbourn of Rock Hall, and his mother is Sarah C. Benton of Piney Neck. ThomasÕ wife Sarah Elbourn, supplied the information on the death certificate.

5.2* Joseph Lemuel Elbourn, b. 2 Nov 1860, Rock Hall, Kent, MD, d. 12 May 1950, Rock Hall, Kent, MD. He m. Harriett Elizabeth ÒHattieÓ Beck on 29 Aug 1882 in Rock Hall, Kent, MD. She was b. 17 Jan 1867 in Rock Hall, Kent, MD, d. 22 Mar 1900, Piney Neck, Rock Hall, Kent, MD, dau. of John A. Beck (b. 1820, Kent, MD) & Sarah Webb (b. 1824, Kent, MD, d. abt. 1868/1870, Kent, MD), and is buried at the Wesley Chapel Cemetery in Rock Hall. The Wesley Chapel Cemetery in Rock Hall, Kent, MD, lists Harriet as Harriet Elizabeth Beck Elbourn, b. Oct 1860 in Kent, MD, d. 21 Mar 1900 in Kent, MD.

Note: Joseph Lemuel ElbournÕs wife (of the 5th generation), Harriet Elizabeth Beck Elbourn, died on 22 Mar 1900 leaving 5 young children in the 6th generation (Mary Virginia Elbourn, Arraminta Elbourn, Sarah Catherine Elbourn, Joseph Owen Elbourn, and Elijah Washington Elbourn).

Census

1900 census -- Joseph and Harriett appear in Edesville, Kent, MD. Joseph and Harriett have 5 children in this census: Mary V. 15, Arraminta 9, Katie 4, Joseph O. 4, and Elijah W 1. Their last child was an unnamed baby born 19 Mar 1901 who died in infancy.

5.3* William Henry Elbourne, b. 2 Feb 1862 (date confirmed by multiple family records from Judy Elbourn Curtis, tnjcurtis@aol.com in March 2014) in Langford, Kent, MD, and d. 30 Sep 1928 in Lincoln, Lancaster, NE. For an unknown reason, he added an ÒeÓ at the end of his surname. His younger brother Charles who also moved to Omaha, NE, had also changed his name to Elbourne.

About 1884, William Henry and his brother George Washington decided to leave MD to go West to explore their opportunities. They worked their way to Omaha, Douglas, NE where they both found employment and met and married their wives.  Their younger brother, Charles Albert Elbourn was living in MD and joined his brothers in Omaha NE in about 1897, where he worked and met and married his wife.

William Henry was a tall, good-looking man, slender, 6Õ3Ó with dark brown hair and brown eyes and had a moustache most of his adult years.

From the Municipal Journal and Engineer, Vol. XIV, No. 6, June 1903, and submitted by Joan Elburn Farley, William H. Elbourne was elected City Treasurer and Clerk in Omaha.

Marriage

William Henry m. Sarah Percis ÒSadieÓ Gibson in Omaha, Douglas, NE on 23 May 1888. They had 8 children, one unnamed daughter died at childbirth.

Research from Judy Elbourn Curtis: Sadie was b. 31 Mar 1869, Bridgeton, Cumberland, Maine, and she d. 14 Nov 1942, Lincoln, Lancaster, NE, dau. of John Henry Gibson (b. 20 Jan 1846, Saccarappa, Cumberland, ME, d. 16 Sep 1931, Buffalo, Erie, NY) and Harriet Cornelia Webb (b. 7 May 1852, Milan, Coos, NH, d. 10 Sep 1898, Buffalo, Erie, NY). She was the oldest of 5 children.  Her father was a carriage maker and carpenter in Maine.  The family moved to Omaha, Nebraska in abt. 1875 where the youngest 3 children were born.  In Omaha, her father was an insurance and real estate broker. Sadie's parents moved to Buffalo, New York in the mid 1890's where her father became the general manager of the American Investor's Trust.  Her mother, Hattie Webb died in 1898 in Buffalo.  Her father then remarried and remained in Buffalo, New York, making occasional visits to Nebraska until he died in 1931. Sadie and her brother Frank were always close and were living in Omaha, Nebraska when she met and married William Elbourn. Sarah ÒSadieÓ Gibson's father, John Henry Gibson, was b. 20 Jan 1848 in Saccarappa (Westbrook), Cumberland, ME  According to wikipedia, Bridgton & Westbrook are very close to each other.  I know the family lived in Bridgton when Sadie was born (oldest child b. 31 Mar 1869); however, the puzzle is her brother Frank (8 Jul 1873, and the location I have is Lowell, Middlesex, MA----this is a head scratcher, as I do not know any family stories regarding living in MA.

Occupation

While in Omaha, William Henry worked for the local trolley (railway) transit system, and eventually became superintendent. He enjoyed local politics and became City Clerk of Omaha from 1901 through 1906. Photo below was submitted by Joan Elburn Farley from the booklet ÒNebraskans, 1854-1904Ó, 1904, page 76. This photo was taken between 1901 and 1906, before William moved to a farm in Adams, Gage, NE, in 1907. His age in this photo is 39-44 years old.

Description: Macintosh HD:Users:Mara:Desktop:ELBURN WILLIAM HENRY.jpg

In about 1907/1908, William bought a farm in Adams, Gage, NE and his family moved there.   Their farm produced corn, wheat and potatoes.  Wm. Henry managed the farm and sold farm insurance for National Fire Insurance Company of Hartford, Connecticut (which later became known as Hartford Insurance), and he traveled much of Nebraska.  He was known for being a man of his word.  He would talk to the farmers, find out what their needs were, leave with a handshake and they knew he would write up the policy and take care of them fairly.

In about 1915, the farm was leased to a family and William bought a drug store/grocery store combination on the corner of 33rd and Holdrege in Lincoln, NE.  The family moved to Lincoln and William continued to sell farm insurance and managed the stores; Sadie and their older children helped in both stores.  He continued with selling farm insurance and managing the stores until shortly before his death in 1928.

Dated Tuesday, May 29, 1906 from the Sun, Baltimore, MD. Joan has a variety of clips that will be put here to shed a more positive light on William.
