History and Research

Hendricks Township in Indiana had three early towns: Marietta, Smithland, and Bengal. Townsmen John Heistand, David Engles, John French, and Redding Money laid out Marietta on August 31, 1835. James Wray plotted it in 1839. Hezekiah Smith laid out Smithland on October 28, 1857. Bengal emerged later. By 1875, Marietta had 175 people while Smithland had 50. In 1900, Hendricks township had a population of 1705 [2]. This line also lived in Tipton, IN; Indianapolis, Marion Co., IN; Cicero, Tipton Co., IN; and Ellensburg, Kittitas Co., WA. We suspect that John FrenchŐs father was born ca. 1790 in New Jersey or Virginia as most of the lineages from DNA Test Group 1 came from New Jersey or Virginia. The Spurlin family came from Virginia and moved during the same period to Ohio. See the biographies of Henry Spurlin and George Washington Spurlin.

First Generation

1.1* John French was b. 1812 in OH, d. 24 Dec 1864 in Hendricks, Shelby Co., IN, m1. Lydia Margaret Spurlin (not Spurling) on 10 Jul 1836 in Shelby Co., IN. She was b. 6 Nov 1818 in Warren Co., OH, and d. 22 Dec 1842, age 24, in Shelby, IN. John moved to IN in 1829, married in 1836, and by 1838 (age 26), their first child was born. Before that, he probably lived in OH with his parents. John m2. Jane M. Williams on 24 Nov 1843 in Shelby Co., IN, after his first wife had died. Jane was b. 1820 in KY and d. 25 Dec 1881 in Blair, Clay Co., IL, and was buried at Fancher Cemetery in Clay Co., IL.

John resided in IN in 1835 when he laid out land in Marietta. He was 23 years old and may or may not have removed from OH with his father. However, John is the earliest known French in this area. His father would have still been of an age to be accountable to work unless he died young.

Lydia M. Spurlin French, b. 6 Nov 1818 in Warren Co., ON, d. 22 Dec 1842 in Shelby Co., IN, buried at Mount Auburn Cemetery in Mount Auburn, Shelby Co., IN.

The above 2 Frenches are the only Frenches buried at the Mount Auburn Cemetery.

In the 1820 census, a D French appears in Lebanon, Warren Co., OH, a C. C. French appears in Wayne, Warren Co., OH, a G. French in Clear Creek, Warren Co., OH, and an S. French in Washington, Warren Co., OH. These ancestry.com files are inconsistent in some cases.

In the Ohio Census, 1790 to 1890, no French appears in Warren Co., OH, before 1860. In 1799 in Hamilton appear a Ralph and Robert French. In 1806 appears Jeremiah and Lot French in Hamilton Co. Many other Frenches appear in Butler Co. and Hamilton Co. prior to 1810. Then the date jumps to 1860.

By the 1840 census, John had lived in Shelby Co., IN for 5 years. The 1840 census shows a John French living in Jackson and Black Hawk, Shelby Co., IN, 1 0 0 0 1 0 0 0 0 0 0 0 0  | 1 0 0 0 1 0 0 0 0 0 0 0 0, which indicates that he and his wife were between 20 and 30 years old, therefore born 1810-1820. And they had a son and daughter both under 5 (perhaps Tunis and Mary).

The 1850 census of Jackson, Shelby Co., IN shows John (36) born in OH, Jane M. (29) born in KY, and their children all born in IN: Janis L. (12), Mary E. (10), James M. (9), Samuel M. (6), Nancy E. (4), Sarah C. (2), and John W. (1), also living with Joshua Sherlin (22). Tunis J. is listed as Janis L., but by re-inspecting the script, it appears to be Tunis J. 

By 1860, in Hendricks, Shelby Co., IN, John is (48), Jane M. (39), Tunis J. (22), Mary E. (20), James M. (19), Samuel M. (15), Sarah C. (12), John W. (11), William A. (9), Lucy J. (6), America A. (4), and Joseph S. (1/2). John d. 24 Dec 1864.

By 1880, John is no longer living, and Jane M. is listed in Blair, Clay Co., IL (49) living with Samuel (25), William (19), America (14), Joseph (10), Martha H. (6), Jane (2), and Penona (1). Jane died in 1881.

Who was JohnŐs Father? The Facts:

Ohio and Indiana Census Records

U.S. Federal Census indexes exist in Ohio starting in 1790.

á    John was b. in OH in 1812. We could check for a French living in OH in the 1810 or 1820 census. His father would have been born ca. 1785 and listed as an adult in 1812 when John was born. No French whatsoever is listed in the 1810 census of Ohio. The 1820 census shows quite a few. John would have been 8 years old.

á    John left Ohio at the age of 17 (in 1829) and resided in Black Hawk, Shelby Co., IN. It could be possible that he left on his own as a young man; thereby, leaving his parents in Ohio. So, letŐs check the OH census for JohnŐs father.

á    No French lived in Lebanon, Warren Co., OH between 1790-1890 per the Ohio Census. Two men named French lived in Warren Co. itself between 1790-1890 per the Ohio Census. They were Samuel French of Union township in the year 1860, and Uriah French of Waynesville, in 1860. Samuel French also appears in the 1850 census of Union, Warren Co., OH, with estimated birth date of 1787 in NJ. However, this Samuel had children Nancy (b. 1833 in NJ), Eliza (b. 1827 in OH), and Samuel (b. 1829 in OH). Samuel could have been an uncle of John. SamuelŐs line is FFA Chart #188.

á    There is a Samuel French who was b. 18 Aug 1788 in Westfield, Essex/Union Co., NJ who d. 1862 in Warren Co., OH which fits in nicely, plus John named one of his sons Samuel. Looking at this SamuelŐs fatherŐs name, we find Joseph P. French, also a name that John named one of his sons. However, this Samuel did not have a son John. This data pertains to FFA Chart #188.

á    There are 238 men with the name French listed throughout Ohio from 1790-1890.

á    In the 1810 census of Ohio, no French is listed (711 Frenches appear throughout the US in 1810).

á    In the 1820 census of Ohio (John left in 1829), 53 Frenches appear. A French would have to be listed with a son age 8 years old. Listed by location below. Note how scattered they are and not many Frenches lived in the same town.

á    John named his first two sons Tunis (Lunis, Junis) and James. His mother could have been Mary after his first daughter. His wife was born in Warren Co., OH, which could be a clue in regards to the migration path to Shelby Co., IN.

á    In the 1840 census of Shelby Co., IN is a Daniel and a David French; either one could have been the father of John French, b. 1812, or his father may have remained in OH where John was born. In this 1840 census of Shelby Co., IN, John is listed as aged 20-30 with one male under 5, one female under 5, and his wife aged 20-30.

á    The 1820 census of OH (the census closest to the date when John was born and the first census of Ohio), shows 50 French men living in IN. His father would have had to be born about 1785, and no French was living in OH that early, so his father probably was born in the east, perhaps NJ considering the fact that the DNA Test Group 1 is mostly from NJ.

á    In the 1830 census of Ohio, 94 Frenches are listed.

á    In the 1830 census of Liberty, Shelby, IN, is a Daniel French, the only French living in Shelby Co.; however, 40 head of household Frenches lived in the entire state of IN in 1830. See townships Hendricks, Shelby, and Liberty in Shelby Co., IN, below.

DNA Tests

Another source would be to look for the men in DNA Group 1 who left New Jersey and moved to Ohio, because we donŐt know JohnŐs fatherŐs Christian name.

á    Most of the Frenches in FFA Chart #188 who migrated to Ohio, went to Washington Co., but all were after 1850.

á    There is a Samuel French in FFA Chart #188 who was b. 18 Aug 1788 in Westfield, Essex/Union Co., NJ who d. 1862 in Warren Co., OH which fits in nicely, plus John named one of his sons Samuel. Looking at this SamuelŐs fatherŐs name, we find Joseph P. French, also a name that John named one of his sons. However, this Samuel did not have a son John.

á    FFA Chart #188 moved to Lebanon, Warren Co., OH in 1798 from Westfield, Essex/Union Co., NJ, then to Decatur Co., IN in 1828, and to Shelby Co., IN in 1834. Both FFA Chart #188 and #187 are from DNA Gp 1. Checking the 1800 census of Lebanon, Warren Co., OH, I find Jedediah French b. 1823 which is too late for this family; however, he married in Shelby IN in 1843, so there could be a connection. His parents were Daniel French and Amy Tingle, the son of Joseph P. French and Anna Robertson. Joseph was b. 1767 in Westfield, NJ. He was the son of Robert C. French and Joanna Osborn. Robert C. French was b. 1724 in Springfield, Essex Co., NJ. See Ref. [5] below.

Perhaps Daniel French has a brother who has a son named John. Daniel was b. 9 Aug 1791 at Westfield, Essex Co., NJ, d. 9 Apr 1843 at Shelby Co., IN, and m. 25 Feb 1819 at Lebanon, Warren Co., OH, which would put in the same cities at the same times as JohnŐs father.

á    FFA Chart #21 of DNA Gp 1 moved from NJ to OH. No John b. 1812.

á    FFA Chart #112 of DNA Gp 1 moved from NJ to OH precisely when John was born there. Moses French was b. 1809 in Walpack, Sussex Co., NJ and his next-in-line sibling Anna was born 1812 in OH. No John b. 1812.

á    FFA Chart #22 of DNA Gp 1 did not go to Ohio. No John b. 1812.

á    FFA Chart #184 of DNA Gp 1 does not show a John born in 1812.

á    FFA Chart #16 of DNA Gp 1 does not go to Ohio.

á    FFA Chart #28 of DNA Gp 1 does not go to Ohio.

á    FFA Chart #36 of DNA Gp 1 goes to Ohio later on than 1812.

Cemeteries

In Shelby Co., IN, ŇaÓ Daniel was buried at the Star Church Cemetery. He was b. 1781 in Westfield, Essex/Union Co., NJ, and his children were all born between 1820 and 1840. We need a child born in 1812, which would be the same generation, but a different sibling. Daniel French was b. 9 Aug 1791 perhaps in Essex Co., now Union Co., NJ, d. 9 Apr 1843 in Shelby Co., IN. His father was Joseph French and his mother was Anna Robertson. He m. 25 Feb 1819 in Warren Co., OH to Amy Tingle who was b. 10 May 1798, d. 17 Nov 1871, and is buried at the Star Church Cemetery. Their children [10]:

Tunis is listed in the 1870 census of Hendricks, Shelby Co., IN as age 31, living with his wife Elizabeth (28), and their children James (7 – b. 1863) and Anna (2 – b. 1868), and TunisŐ sister Mary E. (20). Tunis and Elizabeth are listed in the Shelbyville, Indiana directory of Marietta during 1892-93. Tunis was buried at the Miller Cemetery in Shelbyville, Shelby Co., IN.

2.2 Mary E. French, b. 1840 in Jackson, Shelby Co., IN.

2.3* James M. French, b. 21 Mar 1841 in Sharpsville, Shelby Co., IN. James d. Jan 1909 in Kokomo, Howard Co., IN. He was buried at the Crown Point Cemetery, Kokomo, Howard Co., IN. He was a farmer by trade [12]. In 1860 he resided in Hendricks, Shelby Co., IN, age 19. On 29 Nov 1865 at age 24 he m. Caroline L. Doty in Johnson Co., IN. In 1870 at age 29, he lived in White River, Johnson Co., IN. In 1880 at age 39, he lived in Cicero, Tipton, IN. In 1900 at age 59, he lived in Center, Howard, IN. It states his father John was born in Ohio and his mother in Indiana. In this 1880 census, Caroline is 37, and children Louis A. is 13, Sarah A. is 10, Charles H. is 8, Laura E. is 6, Ida E. is 4, and Clara E. is 3 months.

The 1880 census of Lebanon, Warren Co., OH, shows Elsie French (25, born in 1855 in OH and both her parents were born in OH), Ella French (23, born in 1857 in OH, and both per parents were born in OH), and Rebecca French (25, born in 1855 in IN and both her parents were born in IN) all living in the same household with the Doty family (Dora, Alonzo, Charles, and Edward). These Frenches could have been the children of John FrenchŐs brother, Generation 1. Note that the village of Black Hawk in the county of Shelby, IN, was changed to Mount Auburn on 13 Jan 1844.

JAMES M. FRENCH, a native of Shelby County, Ind., was born March 21, 1841. His father, John French, was born in Ohio in 1812, and at the age of seventeen, came to Shelby County, Ind., and resided in the town of Black Hawk. He was married, in 1836; to Miss Lydia Spurling, and, after her death, was married, in 1844, to Jane M. Williams. Mr. French died in December, 1864. The subject of this sketch was reared in his native county, and July 8, 1861, enlisted in the United States Army, in Company H, Nineteenth Regiment Indiana Volunteer Infantry. He was assigned to the First Division and First Brigade of the Eastern War Department. He engaged in the battle at Catlet Station, Va., the second battle of Bull Run, Chantilly and South Mountain. In the latter battle he was so severely wounded in the right thigh, that eight pieces of bone had to be removed. He was unable to walk without crutches for fourteen months. He remained in the hospital at Frederick City during this time, and was discharged October 13, 1863. He then returned to Shelby County, where he engaged in farming, and, in 1865, removed to Johnson County. In 1875, he came to Tipton County and purchased forty acres of land in Cicero Township, Section 28, where he has since resided. His farm is all, excepting six acres, under cultivation, and well drained. Mr. French was married, December 1, 1866, in Johnson County, Ind., to Miss Caroline Doty. They have five children living-Louis A., born January 20, 1868; Sarah A., born April 17, 1870; Charlie H., born March 5, 1872; Laura E., born December 31, 1873, and Ida, born June 8, 1876. Mr. French is a member of the G. A. R., and politically is identified with the Republican party.

She d. 21 Mar 1881 in Clay Co., IL and is buried at the Old Union Christian Chapel Cemetery in Clay Co., IL. They had 4 children: Rosetta, Orah Elsworth, Nancy Jane, and Charity A.  Only Nancy lived to adulthood.

In 1880, age 13, he lived in Cicero, Tipton Co., IN. In 1900, age 33, he was living in Kokomo City, Howard Co., IN. In 1909 he m. Hattie D. In 1920 at age 53, he lived in Roseburg, Douglas Co., OR, as well as in 1930.

3.7 Sarah Alice French, b. 17 Apr 1870 in Johnson Co., IN, m. Rutherford B. Hayes on 12 Oct 1898, d. 29 Nov 1901 at age 31 and is buried at the Crown Point Cemetery, Kokomo, Howard Co., IN. Rutherford was a grocer by trade.

3.8* Charles Henry French, b. 5 Mar 1872 in Cicero, Tipton Co., IN. He m. Phoebe Agnes Caylor on 17 Apr 1894 at age 21 in Howard Co., IN where they lived until the 1910 census, when they resided in Kokomo Ward 4, Howard Co., IN until he d. on 25 Feb 1943, age 70. He is buried at the Memorial Park Cemetery, Kokomo, Howard Co., IN. They had 6 children [12].

Email on May 18, 2009: If we all keep looking then surely one day there will be a piece that will fall into place and we will know.  I also recently did some research on Reason French who is a few years younger than my John and is in Shelby also on I think its the 1850 census.  Reason was born in Cinncinatti, OH, just next door to Warren, OH where my John's first wife Lydia Spurling came from.  I haven't been able to find out who Reason's parents are, although I found a fair amount on his 4 children.  Keep that in mind as you look around. Also, I have looked fairly extensively into David and Daniel who were in Shelby county early on.  I have never been able to make any connection to them.

She was married to my Great Grandfather, James Elexander Beard. Dora Ann died on October 15, 1948 in Las Animas, Bent County, Colorado. James was born on November 3, 1862 in Muskingum County, Ohio. James also died in Las Animas, Bent County, Colorado. He died on February 7, 1947. The parents of Dora Ann French are Tunis J. French who was born about 1850 in Indiana, and Elizabeth Layman, who was also born about 1850 in Indiana. I do not have any more information on my French side of the family. I do not know if Vermillion County is near Johnson County, but maybe someone here knows about my French Family.

Francis (Frank) Marion French (b June 1840, d June 12, 1907, Lawrence County, OH) & Mary Slavens (Slavins) (b abt 1851 Scioto County, OH; I've found not death record for Mary, but Frank lived with his daughter Lacy Brown in 1900 with his son Willard Upper Twp, Lawrence County OH). Note that Slavens is definitely from Ireland.  Francis is buried in the Grand Army of Republic cemetery. Also note that the Elizabeth Twp where the French family resided was directly next to the land where Mary and her family lived in Scioto County.) Mary is the daughter of Daniel and Lucy (Morgan) Slavens.

I do not have a definite link to Charles French, but Jeremiah and Lydia (Smith) French were married in Athens County OH, where I found Charles and Sarah's family. I truly believe Charles is Jeremiah's father, and Francis Marion French named his 2nd son Charles also.  I really wish that I had a definite link to this as it would open a whole other family to the French's.

SHELBY  COUNTY  HISTORY

          St. Paul, Ind., Oct. 18, 1910-- Editor Republican--- Being the oldest native born in Shelby county, I take the liberty to address you as such and through your paper will speak of some of the early things.  First, my father was one of the first to come to this county.  He moved here in an ox cart with mother and a young child in the cart with a cow tied behind, and after they left Whitewater there was no road and he had to cut the spice brush out of the way in many places.  He settled in the Green woods in Shelby county before Shelbyville was thought of and some time before it was laid out by  John WalkerJohn Hendricks  had settled on the east end of town near where the stillhouse once was, and started a tan yard.  When my father came here he had a few hundred dollars and could begin to improve.  He was a brick mason and made the first brick and built the first brick chimney and the first brick house in the county.  He made the first shingle roof and mother had the first cook stove and father bought the first carriage in the county and opened the first hotel.  Father and mother for some time rode to church in an ox cart and when he bought his carriage the people would stare at them, and when mother got her cook stove women would come for miles to see her cook on it.  Father's barn was the first building in the county with a shingle roof and it is standing yet, but not with the first roof.  This will do as a start and I will give you more later.
