Foreword

IÕve researched this line just about all I can from ancestry.com and from the internet. Additions need to come from family members or from local books or historians who havenÕt put their information online.

P.S. Although Patrick French is not of my line, I will continue to do research on him as time permits.

History and Research

There is no apparent connection with the Quaker Thomas French of Burlington Co., NJ. Homesteads include Monmouth Co., NJ, and VA, and Fairfield and Hancock Counties, OH.

Marlboro Township was not incorporated until 1848 from portions of Freehold Township which was one of the three original Townships when Monmouth County was formed on 31 Oct 1693. Freehold Township was incorporated in 1798, when Patrick was about 33 years of age.

Was Patrick FrenchÕs Father from Ireland?

Patrick is a very common Irish name. The following list shows two men named Patrick French in the mid-1700s. No others are known. If Patrick was truly born in NJ, his father might have immigrated ca. 1760 or before, but no records have been found. If Patrick was born in Ireland or elsewhere, he had to have immigrated before 1789 when his first son was born in NJ. I would make the assumption that this family lived after immigration in New York where the majority of immigrants lived who departed from Ireland.

á     Patrick French, b. 1752 in Roscommon, Ireland, the son of Arthur French and Margaret Daly. Arthur was b. 2 Aug 1728 in Roscommon, m1. Margaret Daly ca. 1749, m2. Alicia Magennis on 25 Jun 1763 in Dublin, Ireland, and d. 24 May 1799 in Dublin. The other children of Arthur French and Margaret Daly besides Patrick were Dominick, Thomas, Emilia, and Louisa. We have no knowledge of any of these early ancestors residing in America.

á     Patrick French, b. 1771 in Tyrone, Galway, Ireland, d. 11 Aug 1858 in Blackrock, Co. Dublin, Ireland, m. Frances Maria Richardson in 1808. This Patrick did no immigrate to America.

á     John French is the first immigrant listed on ancestry.com as departing from Ireland and arriving on the East Coast. He was born ca. 1798 in Ireland, departed from Galway to New York, arriving on 15 Nov 1858, age 60, or Irish ethnicity. He was a farmer.

á     Gilbert K. French was born 1806 in Scotland, departed from Glasgow, Scotland to Moville, Ireland and then to New York arriving on 1 Jun 1880, age 74, on the ship ÒBoliviaÓ. He was a Civil Engineer. He may be related to James French who took the same route from Glasgow to NY arriving 8 Nov 1881, b. ca. 1821, age 60, on the ship ÒEthiopiaÓ. Also R. P. French who took the same route from Glasgow and arrived on 7 Sep 1881, age 54, born ca. 1827, on the ship ÒCircassiaÓ. The earliest of this group taking the Glasgow to Ireland to NY route was a Thomas French who arrived in NY on 13 Apr 1868 on the ship ÒHiberniaÓ with his wife Mary; he was b. ca. 1830 in Scotland, age 38, and his wife was b. ca. 1829 in Scotland. Arriving one year before her on 30 Sep 1867 from Glasgow to Ireland and then NY was Mary H. French, born ca. 1830, age 37, on the ship ÒBritanniaÓ.

á     Daniel French was born ca. 1810 in Ireland, departed from Cobh, Ireland to Boston, MA, on the ship ÒJohn FrancisÓ, arriving on 16 May 1850; he was 40 years old. He immigrated with Bridget French, age 20.

á     Between 1810-1820, at least 70 passengers emigrated from Ireland to America with the surname French. The majority of passengers immigrated to New York; a few to Boston and Baltimore.

á     Listed on ancestry.com is a Patrick French who immigrated to Maryland in 1778, age 45, born in 1733, departing from an unknown port as a felon runaway or convict. His arrival date was after Patrick, listed below, was born.

First Generation

No births are shown on ancestry.com in Freehold, Monmouth Co., NJ.

1.1* Patrick French, b. ca 1760-65 in Freehold twp., Monmouth Co., NJ, then moved south to Rockingham Co., VA, m. Mary Erickson 24 Nov 1788 in Freehold, Monmouth Co., NJ. Patrick d. 1806 in Rockingham, VA. Mary was the dau. of David Erickson who was b. ca. 1740. Patrick is on the Tax List of 1792 in Freehold Township, Monmouth Co., NJ.

Considering that Patrick migrated south as a young man, a migration path would seem to have begun further north in NY.

Second Generation

The first ancestors of the French family to appear in the census records of Monmouth Co., NJ, were:

1850 census: John French, b. 1791 in NY, appears with his wife Lucinda and children Joseph T., Mary E., Charles G., and William A. in Atlantic, Monmouth Co., NJ.

1860-70 censuses: Sarah French of Shrewsbury, Monmouth Co., NJ, born ca. 1789 in MA, living with the Coles family, then aged 71 and 81.

Children of Patrick

2.1* David French, b. ca. 1789 in Freehold, Monmouth Co., NJ, moved with their father, Patrick, to Rockingham County, Virginia,. He d. 2 Dec 1826 in Rockingham, VA. He m. Martha Anderson on 14 Oct 1811 in Hagerstown, Washington Co., MD, died 15 years later, and had at least one son. Martha was b. 1792 and died after 1860. Therefore, Martha was a widow in the 1830, 1840, 1850 census records and should be listed most likely in Virginia. She is not listed in 1830, but by 1850 all household names were listed.

2.2* Reuben French, b. 27 Mar 1790 in Freehold, Monmouth Co., NJ, moved with their father, Patrick, to Rockingham County, Virginia, and then to Fairfield County, Ohio and points west. He d. 10 Aug 1833 in Franklin Co., OH, and is buried at the Middletown Cemetery in Franklin Co., OH. He m. Sarah Coleman on 25 Mar 1817 in Rockingham Co., VA and had at least 4 children before he died 16 years later. Sarah was b. in Nov 1798 in VA, d. 30 Jul 1881 [5] at age 82, and is buried at the Bowers Cemetery, Pickerington, Fairfield Co., OH. On ÒOhio Records Pioneer Families IndexÓ, Rev. & Mrs. Reuben French are listed in Seneca Co., OH. It might have been that Sarah m2. Henry Doty right after Reuben died because Henry and Sarah Doty are living in Violet, Fairfield Co., OH, in the 1850 census with Mary and Patrick French who were ReubenÕs children. Henry and Sarah Doty then had 5 more children: Henry, Sarah A., Adaline, Coleman, Mary, and Eliza Jane. Definitely naming a child Coleman would indicate this is the correct family, as Coleman was SarahÕs maiden name. Later in the 1900 census of Violet, Fairfield Co., OH, Coleman Doty states that his mother was born in Maryland, so this confirms even further his theory.

2.3* Grosvenor (Grovey) Benjamin French, b. 25 Jun 1791 in Freehold, Monmouth Co., NJ, according to the 1850 census of Jackson, Hancock Co., OH, moved with their father, Patrick, to Rockingham County, Virginia, and then to Fairfield County, Ohio and points west. He d. 18 Apr 1856 in Hancock, OH, and is buried at the Bishop Cemetery in Eagle township, Hancock Co., OH. He m. Mary Magdalena Coleman (perhaps sister of his brother ReubenÕs wife) on 7 Aug 1816 in Rockingham, VA, and had at least 9 children. Mary was b. 26 Nov 1794 in VA and d. 15 Apr 1885 in Putnam Co., OH, and is buried at the East Belmore Cemetery in Belmore, Putnam Co., OH. According to the 1880 census of Weston, Wood Co., OH, Mary Ann French was living with her son John French; she was 86 years old and John was 62. She states that she was born in Virginia and that her father was born in Germany and her mother in Pennsylvania; she was widowed by 1880. She appears twice in the 1880 census, also in Belmore, Putnam Co., OH, as the mother-in-law of John H. George, 45, who married her daughter Mary M. French. He is listed in the 1850 census of Jackson, Hancock Co., OH, age 58, living with his wife Mary. He is listed in the 1840 census of Jackson, Hancock Co., OH, with a total of 7 people in the household. He is listed in the 1830 census of Violet, Fairfield Co., OH, with a total of 7 people in the household.

They were living with 7 members of the Doty family, perhaps relatives. The head of household was Henry Doty who was born in 1797 in NJ, married to Sarah, b. 1800, who could have been a French.

DNA Testing

Administered by Julia French Wood. For any questions regarding DNA, please email Julia at juliaFWood@aol.com.

A good source for research would be for a male with the surname French of this line to take the DNA test. It is a simple test that doesnÕt involve blood. A kit is delivered to your house with special brushes for you to take cheek swabs and the tip is injected into the tiny test tubes to be returned to the lab. After the tests that you ordered are completed, in about 4 weeks, you will be notified and can log in to your personal page at the company to view your results and your DNA matches. They may match up with one of the tests shown here: http://www.familytreedna.com/public/french/default.aspx?section=yresults. The FamilyTree DNA website gives a special lower price to those with the surname French. Read about those who approve of it: http://www.familytreedna.com/testimonials.aspx. To get the discounted price for our French DNA Project group, go to http://small-stuff.com/FRENCH/DNA/ and click at the left on "Join the French DNA Project" then place your order. Julia French Wood suggests the 37 marker test (Y-DNA37), but if you want to start with 25, you can upgrade to a higher test at a later date if needed.
