IÕve researched this line just about all I can from ancestry.com and from the internet. Additions need to come from family members or from local books or historians who havenÕt put their information online.

First Generation

1.1* James French, b. ca. 1770, d. between July 18 and Nov 17, 1820 in South Shenango Twp., Crawford Co., PA. James was a shoemaker.

Second Generation

Children of James French, 1.1

2.1 James French, b. 1793 in PA.

2.2* Robert French, b. 1791 in PA, d. 28 Feb 1879 in Crawford, PA, m. Margaret Clancy or Glancy in 1820 and had six children. In the 1860 census, he was living with his wife Margrette who was b. in 1801 in PA, and their son David, who was b. in 1826 in PA. He was living in Shenango, Crawford Co., PA during the 1820 census, with one daughter under age 10. By the 1840 census, he was in the same location, living only with his wife. Still in the same location in the 1850 census, he was living with his wife and sons David and Dowling. He d. 28 Feb 1879 at age 88 in Crawford, PA. By the 1870 census, Robert was 79 and living in West Shenango, Crawford Co., PA with Margaret, son David, and 4 members of the Spencer family [1].

There were only 6 children in this family, so perhaps the last 2 children should be combined. More research is needed.

3.1 Robert Glancy French, b. 1822.

3.2 Hiram French, b. 1824, d. 1884.

3.3 child French, b. 1825.

3.4 David French, b. 1826 in PA and living in 1860 in South Shenango, Crawford Co., PA, according to the 1860 and 1870 censuses. He was a Union soldier in Tennessee for the 13 RegÕt Tennessee Cavalry, a Private.

3.5* John R. French, b. Jun 1829 in Crawford Co., PA, d. 16 Mar 1912 and is buried at the Denny Cemetery in Crawford Co., PA. He was m. to Rebecca Calvin who was b. Jun 1831, d. 9 Aug 1910, and they had 3 children.

3.6* James Dolan French, b. 1832 in PA, d. 1887, lived in Ashtabula Co., OH, m. Julia or Emily Mack. He is buried at the Simons Cemetery in Ashtabula, OH. In the 1860 census, he was living with Emily and their 3 daughters in South Shenango, Craford, PA.

3.7* Dowling French, b. 1832 in PA. He is listed in the 1850 census of South Shenango, Crawford Co., PA, as age 17. By the 1880 census, he is married to Caroline, 21 years younger than him and b. 1852 in PA, and 2 of their children: Budd and Lavant.

4.1 Joseph H. French, b. Jun 1854 in Crawford Co., PA, d. 14 Aug 1923 in Plymouth, Ashtabula Co., OH. He m. Frances Clute, b. 1866, d. 1942. Both are buried in the Edgewood Cemetery in Edgewood, Ashtabula Co., OH.

4.2* Charles Leslie French, b. 16 Mar 1860 in Turnersville, Crawford Co., PA, d. 18 Dec 1939 in Andover, Ashtabula Co., OH. He m. Alice Craig, b. 1859, d. 1934. They are both buried at the Maple Grove Cemetery in Andover, Ashtabula Co., OH.

4.3 Sarah Amanda French, b. 1862, d. 1939, m. Bridgman.

4.4 Julia French, b. 1853 in PA, living in South Shenango, Crawford Co., PA, in the 1860 census.

4.5 Jane French, b. 1856 in PA, living in South Shenango, Crawford Co., PA, in the 1860 census.

4.6 Sarah Ann French, b. 1858 in PA, m. Salmon D. Ashley and had son Claude Bliss Ashley, 1883-1945, who had daughter Doris M. Ashley, m. Bucci. Living in South Shenango, Crawford Co., PA, in the 1860 census. In the 1880 census, they were living in Richmond, Ashtabula Co., OH, with 2 children. Sarah d. 16 Nov 1920 in Ashtabula Co.

4.7* James or Jason ÒBuddÓ French, b. 1873 in PA, living in West Shenango, Crawford Co., PA in the 1880 census, age 7. He m. Winnie Spark in 1892, and was living in Gustavus, Trumbull, OH, in the 1900 census with Winnie and his 3 children, Grace, Earl, and Ernest. Winnie was b. Mar 1875 in OH.

4.8* Lavant Leffingwell French, b. 23 Jun 1875 in PA, living in West Shenango, Crawford Co., PA in the 1880 census, age 5. He registered for the WWI draft in Trumbull, OH. He was medium height, small build, brown hair and eyes. The WWI draft card was signed by nearest relative Ella Gertrude French. In the 1900 census, he was living in Gustavus, Trumbull Co., OH, married to Ella French in 1896, living with their newborn son Albon.

5.1 Lloyd Pearl French, b. 6 Mar 1881 in Andover, Ashtabula Co., OH, d. 16 Jan 1967 in Timerlake, Lake Co., OH.

LLOYD P FRENCH: Timberlake; 85, resident here for 3 years, died this morning at home following a lingering illness. Born in Andover 6 Mar 1881, Mr. French had been a long time resident of Ashtabula prior to moving here. A yard clerk for NY Central RR, he retired 1 Aug 1946. He had been a member of Andover Lodge 506-F&AM since 1914 & Brotherhood of Railroad Trainmen since 1902. He was also a member of Prospect Presbyterian Church-Ashtabula. Preceded in death by his wife Ellen in 1964, he is survived by a dau: Mrs. Ruth Rosser with whom he resided; 2 grandchildren, 2 gr grand-children. Service will be Wednesday at Davis Funeral Home. The RevHarold Shiflet-Prospect Presbyterian Church will officiate. Burial will be in Edgewood Cem.

5.2* Clyde Howard French, b. 21 Jul 1883 in Andover, Ashtabula Co., OH, d. 2 May 1952 in Andover, Ashtabula Co., OH. He was buried at the Maple Grove Cemetery in Andover, Ashtabula Co., OH. He m. Ella Pendleton.

5.3 Grace French, b. May 1894 in OH, m. Oney H. Goff and had at least 8 children: Leola B., Aline G., Merle A., Cecil H., Donald E., Duane W., Wilma J., and Ralph E. In the 1930 census, they were also living with GraceÕs uncle Theron A. French, b. Nov 1855 in PA, age 74. Grace d. 7 May 1894 in Jefferson, Ashtabula Co., OH.

In the 1870 census, Theron was living in Andover, Ashtabula, OH, age 15, living with the Root and Anderson family. In the 1880 census of South Shenango, Crawford Co., PA., he was a farm laborer, age 25, and living with the Hill family. In the 1900 census of Hickory, Mercer Co., PA, he was living with his wife Emma H. Baker and their 2 children, Joseph A. and Edward T. By the 1910 census, Emma was living alone, widowed, in Sharpsville, Mercer Co., PA, living with her son Edward. The 1920 census of Hickory, Mercer Co., PA states that she was b. 1863 in PA, divorced, living with her son Edward and a nephew Clayton Crawford, age 42. Theron A. FrenchÕs father was born in PA, and his mother in Ohio.

5.4 Earl A. French, b. 4 Jan 1897 in Gustavus, Trumbull, OH, d. Nov 1983 in Pellston, Emmet Co., MI. He registered for the WWI draft in Flint, Genesee Co., MI. He had blue eyes and brown hair. Most likely he never married because the 1910, 1920, and 1930 census records show him living with various people, none with the surname French.

5.5* Ernest W. French, b. 16 Apr 1898 in Gustavus, Trumbull, OH. He registered for the WWI draft in Fostoria, Tuscola Co., MI. He was medium height and build with gray eyes and dark brown hair. He d. Jan 1971 in Mayville, Tuscola, MI. He m. Margaret B. Stevens, and lived in the 1930 census in Flint, Genesee Co., MI, with his wife and 3 children.

5.6 Mariam P. French, b. 1903 in Gustavus, Trumbull, OH,

5.7* Albon Gardner French, b. 30 Sep 1899 in Gustavus, Trumbull Co., OH. He registered for the WWI draft in Trumbull, OH. He was tall and slender with brown hair and eyes. By the 1920 census of Ellwood City, Lawrence Co., PA, he was 20 years old and a lodger with many others, none with the surname French. By the 1930 census, he was living in Gustavus, Trumbull, OH, age 29, married to Thelma, and with their 2 children Robert L., and Mary E. He d. Jun 1969 in New Smyrna Beach, Volusia Co., Florida.

6.1 Bliss Howard French, b. 1912 in Andover, Ashtabula Co., OH, d. 22 Jun 1929 in Huron, Erie Co., OH. He was buried at the Maple Grove Cemetery, Andover, Ashtabula Co., OH.

6.2 Belle Marie French, b. 22 Aug 1925, living in Flint, Genesee Co., MI in the 1930 census. She m. Vincent S. Sikora. She d. 7 Apr 2009 in Ann Arbor, MI. They had children Cherrie (Michael) Yankee of St. Charles, Linda (George) Long of North Dakota, and Debbie Mol of Texas.

6.3 Stephen E. French, b. 1927, living in Flint, Genesee Co., MI in the 1930 census.
