Fitzjohn Surname

It turns out that the Hertfordshire Record Office has all the gravestones typed up, so I xeroxed those of the Fitzjohn and Thurgood families and looked thru all the others and no Elbourn. I copied about 15 pages relevant to the Elborns and I can tell you that in Hertfordshire Co. The name is most often spelled Elborn, and in Cambridgeshire it is Elbourn. I will take these pages home and really study them. Off hand I can say that only Matthew looks to make a connection, and perhaps Nathaniel. Nothing more to be had at the Hertfordshire Record Office. I had someone hoping me almost the entire time, and she said record in the 1700s are very sparse. The elbornes that we found were all labourers, not even farmers which is a higher rank. They didn't even have trades. I have a feeling that those in Cambridge will be shoemakers or similar.

Sarah fitzjohns father was George and William Elbons father was Matthew. They named their only one son William, probably born before his father William died in the rev war ca. 1783. As stated in the 1790 census, Sarah had a son born after 1774 and this was probably William. There were also 2 daughters. As Sarah and William married in 1775, and I have this original record, all his 3 children were born between 1776 and 1783. I would suppose that they would have named a daughter Sarah. But if this son William were my husbands family who moved to Ohio in 1804 which is very likely the one, he did not name a child Sarah.

Vital Records

Anne Row may have been christened on 1 May 1724 in St. Stephens, St. Albans, Hertfordshire, England, the dau. of Stephen and Mary Row. This is a fairly good bet as no other dates or places appear possible with the information that is available.

Mathew Elbourn married Anne Row on 23 Feb 1756.

Mathew and Anne Elbourn christened William Elbourn on 27 Mar 1757.

William and Sarah Elborn christened Ann Elborn on 11 Aug 1776. The only 2 women named Ann in Maryland who were born in England were Ann Bennett in District 5 of Carroll Co., MD, and Ann Hope in Baltimore, both in the 1850 census. Could this William have immigrated to Maryland by 1777 and enlisted in the Rev. War in 1781? The Sarah Elborn who is listed in the 1790 census of Kent Co., MD, had unnamed daughters with no age given.
