3.2 William Elbourn, christened 16 Sep 1705 in Royston, Hertfordshire, England, son of William and Anne Elbourn. No Elbourn marriages in Royston exist except for his father. William Elbourne died on 5 Mar 1748 in Royston at age 45 (o).

3.3 Robert Ellbourn, christened on 3 Nov 1706 in Royston, Hertfordshire, England, son of William and Anne Ellbourn. No Elbourn marriages in Royston exist.

Robert m1. Ann Ellbourn who died 19 Jul 1726 as the wife of Robert in Sawston. Robert Ellbourn m2. on 14 Oct 1726 to Mary Halls in Sawston, Cambridgeshire, England. Mary, wife of Robert in wool, died 20 Aug 1727 in Sawston, Cambridgeshire, England. Robert Elbourn, who was a widower, was m3. on 21 Oct 1729 to Mary Hockley in Sawston, Cambridgeshire, England. She was the mother of all RobertÕs children. Mary Hockley Elbourn died 17 Jan 1769 as a widow in Sawston. She was most likely the one born on 9 Mar 1712 in Burwell, Cambridgeshire, England, the dau. of John and Mary Hockly.

4.1 Mary Ellbourn, born 11 Apr 1731 in Sawston, and died 24 Aug 1731 as the dau. of Robert and Mary, in Sawston, Cambridgeshire, England.

3.4 Thomas Ellbourn, christened 9 Apr 1710 in Royston, Hertfordshire, England, son of William and Ann Ellbourn. No Elbourn marriages in Royston exist.

3.5 Mathew Ellbourn, christened 30 Sep 1716 in Royston, Hertfordshire, England, son of William and Anne Ellbourn (o). No Elbourn marriages in Royston exist. Mathew registered to marry Anne Row on 11 Jan 1756 in nearby Baldock (that is, only a few miles from Royston), and they were married on 23 Feb 1756 (both records exist) in Baldock, Hertfordshire, England at age 40. It appears as if it were the first marriage for both of them. Because they married late in life, they had only one son, William, named after his grandfather.

Matthew was listed in the Hertfordshire Militia in 1758 and 1759 from the Hertfordshire Militia Ballot Lists of men of a suitable age who were eligible for the militia and who had not yet done duty as a militia man; the partial census of working men was from 1758-1786. Britain was afraid France might cause a war, so they trained men starting with the First Regiment. In 1759 Mathew would have been 43 years old. Mathew was not listed in 1760.

The only Anne Row listed in the Parish Records of England at this time was christened on 1 May 1724 in St. Stephens, St. Albans, Hertfordshire, England, the dau. of Stephen and Mary Row. There is a large Elbourn family in St. Albans. If Mathew and Anne had son William on 27 Mar 1757, she would have been 33 years old and they may have not been able to have any more children.

ÒAnÓ Ann Elborn, a widow, appears in Baldock as buried on 3 Jan 1806 at St. Mary the Virgin (o). According to document MS 11936/391/609624, dated 27 Dec 1792, held at the London Metropolitan Archives, Mathew Elbourne was living on High Street in Baldock, Hertfordshire. At this time he would have been 76 years old.

ÒAÓ John Watson was born in Royston on 2 Nov 1775, the son of Thomas and Elizabeth. ÒAÓ John Watson was married on 19 Oct 1763 to Elizabeth Palmer of Royston. ÒAÓ John Watson was married to Ann Bull on 9 May 1782 in Royston. ÒAÓ John Watson was married on 8 Jun 1784 to Sarah Bettle in Royston.

The information between these dotted lines is conjecture and a theory. We are trying to connect the Matthew in Baldock with the Matthew in Maryland. There could have been more than one Matthew Elbourn at that time. Perhaps some of this information will conflict with one another.

Matthew enlisted in the Rev. War in Maryland on 4 May 1779. The Second Regiment began in England in Jan 1778, and Matthew was mustered in during July 1779 as a Private, discharged on 16 Aug 1780 as he was missing. A possibility exists that after the Rev. War when Mathew went missing, he could have returned to England.

NOTE: So far we believe that this line does not connect whatsoever with America. It is kept here for further research. If you would like to help, please email marafrench@mindspring.com.

                  Chronology

1678 – MatthewÕs father William was christened on 10 Dec 1678 in Hinxton, Cambridgeshire, England, baptized as son of John and Elizabeth.

1703 – MatthewÕs father William m. Anne Pryor on 10 Apr 1703 in Royston, Hertfordshire, England. They had several children – William, Robert, Thomas -- and Matthew was their last.

1744/45 -- 18 Jan 1744/45 Ann Elborn, wife of William Elborn, buried.

1744 -- William Thorogood was born 4 Jul 1744 in Baldock, son of William and Elizabeth Thorogood.

1753 – Matthew was the master of the trade of a Turner in London on 9 May 1753 until 1760, teaching apprentice James Porter. Does this conflict with the Matthew of Baldock?

1756 – Matthew registered to marry Anne Row on 11 Jan 1756 in Baldock.

1756 – Matthew married Anne Row on 23 Feb 1756 in Baldock, Hertfordshire, England at age 40. Both Matthew and Anne Row belonged to the Baldock Parish.

1757 -- Mathew and Anne baptized son William on 27 Mar 1757 in Baldock.

1757 – Sarah Fitzjohn was born 9 May 1757, dau. of George and Anne, and baptized on 23 Jul 1758 in Baldock. Later she married son William Elbourn, born same year.

1758 – Matthew listed in the Hertfordshire Militia in 1758 and 1759 from the Hertfordshire Militia Ballot Lists of men of a suitable age who were eligible for the militia.

1758 -- William Thurgood was born 8 Oct 1758, the son of Matthew and Anne Croft in Baldock.

1760 – MatthewÕs journeyman as a turner 7-year commitment was complete.

1761 – James Porter appears in Chestertown, Kent Co., MD, after his apprenticeship.

1775 – Son William married Sarah Fitzjohn of Baldock on 31 Dec 1775.

1776 – Son William and Sarah baptized daughter Ann on 11 Aug 1776 in Baldock, named after both WilliamÕs and SarahÕs mothers.

1777 – Daughter Ann died young and was buried on 27 Sep 1777. They had no further children, perhaps as William left shortly to fight in the Revolutionary war in 1779, returned home to Baldock in 1782 after his 3-year commitment, and died in 1788.

1778 – SarahÕs father, George Fitzjohn, wrote a will in April 1778. George was born 1699, died 19 Mar 1778, age 79, which may have been before the Elborn family moved to Maryland.

1779 – Matthew and son William joined the Revolutionary War effort in Maryland. Matthew enlisted in the Rev. War with the Second Regiment in Maryland on 4 May 1779 for 1 ½ years, which would end Nov 1780, but he mustered out early.

1779 – Matthew was first mustered in during Jul 1779.

1780 – Matthew was among the Second Regiment Losses on 16 Aug 1780 as he was missing. He may have returned to England.

1781 – Son William mustered in the Rev. War in March 1781, and not heard of since this time.

1782 – Son William was found on 1 Jan 1782, sick in Williamsburg, VA. He may have returned to England.

1782 – Son William Elborn of Baldock was a maltmaker, listed in the 1782 Militia Lists of 1758-1785, and no other year, and no other Elborn is listed.

1788 – Son William died 12 Dec 1788 in Baldock. He was a laborer. Sarah became a widow.

1789 -- Sarah Fitzjohn Elborn, b. 1744, married William Thurgood on 1 Nov 1789 in Baldock as a ÒsecondÓ marriage. She was a widow when she married him; therefore, her first husband was an Elborn who died before 1789. The marriage was registered on 1 Nov 1789, but the actual marriage took place 22 Mar 1790 in Baldock. Who was the Sarah Fitzjohn who was born 9 May 1757????

1792 – Matthew was living on High Street in Baldock, age 76, on 27 Dec 1792.

1806 -- Ann Elborn, the widow of Matthew, appears in Baldock as buried on 3 Jan 1806 at St. Mary the Virgin. If she was the Anne Row christened on 1 May 1724 in St. Stephens, St. Albans, Hertfordshire, England, the dau. of Stephen and Mary Row, she would have died at age 82.

1814 -- William Thurgood, died 17 Nov 1814, aged 70, born 4 Jul 1744 or . . . .

1817 – William Thorogood died 3 Dec 1817 at age 73 in Baldock.

1838 -- Sarah Thurgood died 30 May 1828 and was buried 5 Jun 1828 in Baldock at St. Mary the Virgin, aged 84. This would indicate she was born in 1744 and that her maiden name was not Fitzjohn as Sarah Fitzjohn was born in 1757.

4.1 William Elbourne was christened on 27 Mar 1757 in Baldock, Hertfordshire, England, as the son of Mathew and Anne (o).

The family moved from Royston to Baldock as WilliamÕs grandfather, William, was the only Elborn born in Royston, and that was in 1705; no marriages or burials. The only births listed in Baldock were William in 1757 and his daughter Ann in 1776. The only marriages listed in Baldock were William in 1775 and Mathew in 1756. The only death listed in Baldock was Ann, WilliamÕs daughter, in 1777 (o).

William Elbourn married Sarah Fitzjohn in Baldock on 31 Dec 1775. She was born on 9 May 1757 in Baldock, the dau. of George and Anne (Croft*) Fitzjohn, and baptized on 23 Jul 1758 in Baldock. Because both WilliamÕs and SarahÕs mothers were named Anne, it would appear logical that they would name a daughter Anne, which they did on 11 Aug 1776 in Baldock, but she died on 27 Sep 1777.

*The Croft family in Baldock shows 17 births between 1701-1767. Three of these births were named Matthew, 3 generations in a row. Ann Croft was b. 18 Jun 1732 in Baldock, the dau. of Matthew and Anne Croft. George Fitzjohn was b. 13 Apr 1710 in Baldock as the son of George and Elizabeth. George Fitzjohn d. 29 Apr 1761 in Baldock or on 25 Mar 1778 in Baldock. A will exists for George Fitzjohn in Hertfordshire written in April 1778; the source is the Prerogative Court of Canterbury Wills Index, 1750-1800. Because he wrote a will, he must have had something of worth.

Matthew Croft, baptized in Baldock, 21 Jul 1728, son of Matthew and Anne

Matthew Croft, baptized in Baldock, 28 Nov 1756, son of Matthew and Anne

Matthew Craft, buried 8 Aug 1845 in Baldock, born 1811

Matthew Cooper Craft, buried 18 Feb 1847 in Baldock, born 1846, 18 months

*Matthew Elborn could have been named after Matthew Croft.

George Fitzjohn, SarahÕs father, was probably born before 1720 as their first child was born in 1741. This coincides with MatthewÕs birthdate of 1716 as being contemporaries. GeorgeÕs wife, Anne Croft, married George on 2 Sep 1754 in Baldock; this doesnÕt coincide with the children they had, so needs more research.

The Fitzjohn family of Baldock was quite large. All records are from Baldock.

William Thorogood was born 4 Jul 1744 in Baldock, son of William and Elizabeth Thorogood; he d. 3 Dec 1817 at age 73 in Baldock. He also had a sister, Mary, born in 1745 in Baldock.

Sarah (maiden name unknown but perhaps Croft), b. 1744, married to a man named William Thurgood on 1 Nov 1789 in Baldock as a ÒsecondÓ marriage (o). She was a widow when she married him and her first husband was an Elborn; therefore, her first husband Elborn had died by 1789. The marriage was registered on 1 Nov 1789, but the actual marriage took place 22 Mar 1790 in Baldock. At her second marriage, she was 33 years old and probably still young enough to have children, but none are listed. Note that William Croft signed the marriage of Sarah Elborn and William Thurgood in their presence as he was the brother of Ann Croft and the uncle of Sarah – this connection further proves this marriage and that this family remained in England. William Thurgood was the one born 8 Oct 1758, the son of Matthew and Anne Croft in Baldock, and the brother of Ann Croft who was SarahÕs mother. Sarah Thurgood was buried 5 Jun 1828 in Baldock and was buried at St. Mary the Virgin. SarahÕs first husband was to a man named Elborn. She died as widow of William Thurgood, on 30 May 1828, aged 84, and was therefore born in 1744. William Thurgood died on 17 Nov 1814, aged 70.

5.1 Ann Elborn christened 11 Aug 1776 in Baldock, Hertfordshire, England, as the dau. of William and Sarah Elbon (o). Ann Elborn was buried in Baldock on 27 Sep 1777, the daughter of William (no mother listed) (o).

2.5 Margaret Elborn, b. 11 Jn 1683 in Hinxton, Cambridgeshire, England, baptized as dau. of John and Elizabeth.

2.6 Barbarah Elborne, b. 8 Apr 1686 in Hinxton, Cambridgeshire, England, baptized as dau. of John and Elizabeth.

2.7 Francis Elborne, b. 14 May 1688 in Hinxton, Cambridgeshire, England, baptized as dau. of John and Elizabeth. She d. on 24 May 1694 in Hinxton.

2.8 Robert Elborne, b. 11 Jun 1690 in Hinxton, Cambridgeshire, England, baptized as son of John and Elizabeth. Robert probably married ca. 1710-1720. The only marriage listed in this time period was ÒaÓ Robert Elborn marrying Elizabeth Ison in 1711 in Harston, Cambridgeshire, England. Harston is just west of Little Shelford where other Elbornes lived.

2.9 Ann Ellborne, b. 26 Sep 1692 in Hinxton, Cambridgeshire, England, baptized as dau. of John and Elizabeth.

1.3 Katharine Elborn, b. 19 Oct 1645 in Little Shelford, Cambridgeshire, England, the dau. of John and Margaret Elborne.

1.4 Thomas Elborne, b. 9 Jan 1646/1647 in Little Shelford, Cambridgeshire, England, the dau. of John and Margaret Elborne. He d. Jan 1721 in Little Shelford, Cambridgeshire, England.

1.5 William Elborn, b. 22 Dec 1650 in Little Shelford, Cambridgeshire, England, the dau. of John and Margaret Elborne.

1.6 Robert Elborn, b. 25 Feb 1654 in Little Shelford, Cambridgeshire, England, the dau. of John and Margaret Elborne. He m. Maria Foster on 1 May 1688 in Great Shelford.

1.7 Henery Elborne, b. 2 Feb 1652 or 1657 in Little Shelford, Cambridgeshire, England, the dau. of John and Margaret Elborne. After the birth of Henery in Little Shelford, no Elbornes were born until 1755 in Little Shelford and births continued in that city until at least 1903. Henry may have married in 1683 to Mary Culver of Harston. He died 9 Mar 1738 in Harston, Cambridgeshire, England. See Tribal Pages.

A.3 Joan Elborne, b. 21 Jan 1619/1620 in Arrington, Cambridgeshire, England, dau. of Thomas and Katherine Elborne. She d. 1 Apr 1669 in Wendy, cum Shingay, Cambridgeshire, England. See Tribal Pages.
